It's not a risk. They need the sale even more than the US needs the money. How do people not identify leverage properly

100 billion is a blip for us.

I love the Russian military in Saudi angle the most. They'd be viewed as another Assad and toppled (dictators backed by Russian force.) Perhaps Assad will last longer if they keep heading off a cliff.

The risk is not the loss of a sale. It's that they would turn to Russia and / or China to purchase their military assets. The risk is moving the geo-political balance in the region away from the US towards the other major world powers.

We're already in the midst of that happening. The Saudi's would be bluffing all the way in my opinion. We know everything. Plus China and Russia's stuff is junk.

If 9/11 didn't change the calculus, this certainly won't. The Geopolitical Chessboard: Eurasia should be required reading for everyone who wants to understand the game and the stakes.

A Turkish newspaper reported on Oct. 18 that one of the suspects involved in the disappearance of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi died in a “suspicious car accident” in Riyadh.

Mashal Saad al-Bostani, a 31-year-old lieutenant of the Saudi Royal Air Forces, was among the 15 suspects who arrived and left Turkey on Oct. 2 after going to Saudi Arabia’s Istanbul consulate when Khashoggi visited there, according to daily Yeni Şafak.

The last pocket of ISIS is resilient and it didn't make sense to let them live like we have. Probably because of all the oil and gas fields they don't want to blow up. They are probably the most dangerous out of all the cells. They are decimating the tribes of Deir ez Zour and have been since 2013-ish, on a massive scale. Larger than that. I've seen a video in 2014 of them just brutally, slowly, massacring men on a street for 18 straight minutes. That's when Shishani gave the order to kill over an estimated 900 of al-Shaitat clan.

The bodies of 230 people killed by the Islamic State group have been found in a mass grave uncovered by their relatives in Syria's Deir Ezzor province, a monitoring group said.

The discovery brings the number of Shaitat tribal members slain during the jihadists' summer advance in Deir Ezzor province near Iraq to more than 900, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Wednesday. The Britain-based group said it had "learned from trusted sources that more than 230 bodies have been found in a mass grave in the desert near Al-Kashkiyeh in the east of Deir Ezzor".

The "vast majority" were civilians, many of them executed in cold blood after the tribe rose up against the Islamic State after it had driven out rival jihadists and rebels from the area.

IS controls large swathes of northern and eastern Syria, as well as parts of neighbouring Iraq. Hundreds more members of the Shaitat tribe were still missing, said the Observatory, which relies on a large network of activists, doctors and military sources on all sides of the Syrian conflict for its reports.

The tribespeople discovered the grave as they returned to their villages from months of displacement after losing their battle against IS.

They have been allowed to return only after agreeing to respect an IS-imposed curfew, as well as a prohibition on gatherings and weapons. Anyone who fights IS, according to the jihadists' rules, will be considered a heretic and executed. The jihadist group first emerged in Syria's three-year war in spring last year and has since committed some of the continuing conflict's worst atrocities.

Reported discoveries of such graves have been rare in the Syrian war, which broke out in March 2011 when President Bashar al-Assad's forces unleashed a bloody crackdown on the democracy protests.

In February, when IS withdrew its force from Aazaz, in the northern province of Aleppo, the Observatory said it was possible that a mass grave has been found in the town.

But such atrocities have been much more frequent in neighbouring Iraq, where thousands of people have gone missing since the jihadists overran large parts of the country earlier this year.

It’s easy to forget that all of eastern Syria and most of the portion of Iraq that borders Syria is just desert, so although the SDF and Iraqi army are very capable in a straight up fight they don’t have the manpower to keep those areas under constant control. DEZ needs to be cleared out as that’s still a city ISIS physically controls but wouldn’t it take a Mosul-esque operation?

Many people have fled, still, probably, but at that point you've already done Raqqa and Mosul, so why allow them a southern base of operations that has been their nucleus in western Iraq and eastern Syria for years? The SDF launched their new operation but for a while they sat on it because of the Iran "situation." The entire governorate is one story but its sliced up in control in its 14 sub-districts. This is the same area AQI regrouped in. Where in 2013, Baghdadi was reportedly spotted in a convoy that was 50 cars deep going to a celebration in Albu Kamal. There were no US or Russian air strikes at that time so its plausible. That area is frightening. Where caterpillar eyebrowed Abu Waheeb executed those innocent truck drivers. He got his though. A while back the man who runs the Al-Jaghayfa tribe Twitter account told me in a DM that when after we literally blew Waheeb to pieces, his family and wives gathered the pieces in a basket lol. I normally wouldn't laugh about that but not a lot of men deserve to be served to Satan like him.

Kelly, Bolton Get in Profane Shouting Match Outside the Oval Office

President Donald Trump’s chief of staff and his national security adviser engaged in a profanity-laced argument outside the Oval Office on Thursday, according to three people familiar with the episode.

The chief of staff, John Kelly, and the national security adviser, John Bolton, fought over immigration and border crossings, including the performance of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, one person familiar with the matter said.

AUSTIN, TX—Emphasizing that the state had done nothing so far to merit anything besides the status quo, a new attack ad released Thursday by incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz declared that his challenger, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, was “too good” for Texas. “He’s charismatic, he’s good-looking, he’s clearly a nice guy—and frankly, you don’t deserve someone like that,” says Cruz during the 30-second TV spot, in which he is seen sitting on a living room sofa with his wife and children who stare silently into the camera and intermittently nod in agreement. “If you elect him, he’s going to come in here, listen to what you have to say, and then incorporate that into the way he governs. What makes you think you’ve done anything to earn that kind of treatment? I mean, if you really have your heart set on somebody who is well-liked and wants to work to bring all Texans together, then go ahead, vote for him. But that’s not what Texas stands for—at least not the Texans I represent.” The ad then closes with a close-up on the senator’s face and the appearance of a new slogan, “Ted Cruz: What Texas Has Coming To It.”

It really isn't politics, but it isn't really for the poop thread. This is hilarious.

He's intelligent, but that only makes his rhetoric more disingenuous. Tho I agree with his cat petting policies.

Davos in the Desert is now Davos Deserted.

Initially the king, who has handed the day-to-day running of Saudi Arabia to his son, commonly known as MbS, was unaware of the extent of the crisis, according to two of the sources with knowledge of the Saudi royal court. That was partly because MbS aides had been directing the king to glowing news about the country on Saudi TV channels, the sources said.

That changed as the crisis grew.

“Even if MbS wanted to keep this away from the king he couldn’t because the story about Khashoggi’s disappearance was on all the Arab and Saudi TV channels watched by the king,” one of the five sources said.

“The king started asking aides and MbS about it. MbS had to tell him and asked him to intervene when Khashoggi’s case became a global crisis,” this source said.

I watched that Greg Gianforte video again and realized reporter Ben Jacobs tried to counter with a Stone Cold Stunner at :34 seconds. :donger:
