Seems like it's mostly watered down versions of the same Black Friday deals.

Just to add to this I bought an updated Amazon Echo (the $99 one for $79) and it sounds a lot better for music. I replaced my son's with this since he only uses it for music in his room and I'll give his gen1 to my mom. I also got the Echo Show with the screen for whatever the discount was to replace another gen1 in our kitchen. It was a great cooking assistant before but it's a lot better with a screen for looking at timers without always having to ask as well as looking at recipes rather than just listening to them.

So even though the sales don't look great as far as breadth goes I'm a big fan of their personal assitants as I have a Google Home too and the Amazon devices are way better to date although I expect them to all be the same in a few years.

I got a Dyson vacuum for $250, normally 400, and a couple of blurays of new releases for dirt cheap. Oh and a 4tb portable hard drive for $80, normally 120.

And the Amazon home stuff is so much better than Google's. The Google stuff just looks nicer. Im still tempted to get a Google home mini since it's only $30 and comes with a $10 gift card just to try it out and mess around with it. We haven't committed to any of them yet since we're waiting until we get a house so we can set up an actual connected home.

That Amazon echo spot creeps me out since they want to put an always on camera literally right next to your bed. That's where I draw the line.

As far as always listening, most people carry a phone on them everywhere and if you use any of those assistants they're always listening.

I think they still log your location via WiFi access points they can triangulate on. Read something about that recently.

They can geolocate your IP regardless, if you're hooked up to the internet. incognito doesn't do dick, other than keep your wife from seeing your porn searches.

bumping this

I was thinking of getting a new laptop. Mine is about 5 years old and is definitely starting to slow down. I don't do anything crazy on it other than use the internet and use the basic Word/Excel/iTunes etc.

For you tech people, does this seem like a good deal? My current laptop is an HP Pavilion and I never had any issues with it

The Hard Drive is pretty small. Might not be a big deal for you, depending on what you use it for.

What do you do on your personal laptop? Do you game or just email and browse the web?

If nothing special install Linux on it to see how it runs without an old copy of Windows and a bloated registry.

Before you buy something backup your files to whatever cloud you use or an external drive and give Linux a go. My boy uses it at home and by uses it has no clue what the OS is as he just browses a few sights and watches YouTube and movies with it

I just ordered a bunch of speakers and shit. Going to do distributed in ceiling speakers in the living room/dining room/kitchen, and going to replace my home theater L/C/R with in-walls, and add 2 in-ceiling speakers to have Atmos. Should be a fun project. I'm going with these:
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=15700
for L/R in the home theater speakers
This center channel
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24431
These for Atmos in 8" Diameter:
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24434

And these for the Living Room/Dining Room/Kitchen:

I already had a pair of the Yamahas in my garage, which was not a good spot for them, so I'm going to use my old L/C/R speakers in the garage and use these for this project.

Good for you! I’ve gone backwards and don’t care about home theater as much now. I’m all about 2.0 and 2.1 stereo

The reasoning for this is different for each spot.

The living room/kitchen/dining room currently are fed through a pair of large floor standing speakers, which take the place of end tables next to our couch. Ceiling speakers will let us get rid of those, so we can put the end tables that we already have that match our coffee table in there.

The TV room speakers are currently these, mounted on cheap plastic speaker wall mounts. The wall mounts are leaning now from the weight of the speakers, and I decided rather than replace the mounts, I'd upgrade and put nice speakers in the walls.:
http://www.bostonacoustics.com/CA/Produ ... nAcoustics)&CatId=HomeAudio(BostonAcoustics_CA)&SubCatId=

I'm debating whether to paint the grilles to match the wall, leave them as-is, or put the grilles on if we know kids are coming over. Since selyar bought me an atmos-ready receiver for my birthday, I figure why not add the two atmos speakers while I'm already doing ceiling speakers. I'm also likely going to add recessed lights in the TV room while I'm cutting holes in the ceiling, and replace the lighted ceiling fan with a nicer one as well.

Which one do you want? I'll sell it to you for a good price (and I'll replace the capacitors in it as preventative maintenance). The one on the shelf isn't for sale though, since that's my new RGB + SPDIF modded 1chip.

The two fat SNESes are unmodified. One of the minis is RGB + SPDIF modded, the other is stock.

The classic edition SNESes are basically just emulators with Nintendo made controllers and a bunch of games built in. The controllers are spot on. They're also easily hackable to add more roms. I'd wholeheartedly recommend them if you don't care about everything

Is that like a Chromecast function where you can send music from your phone to the receiver?

It allows the receiver to stream music from a network drive, Pandora/Spotify, Bluetooth, etc., and can sync up multiple musiccast connected speakers to play everything seamlessly throughout the house. It's controlled by their Android/iPhone app. We picked up one wireless musiccast speaker for our bedroom, that we'll bring outside if we're grilling or whatever. It works really well.

Now the question is, should I run wire for future speakers in every room? It wouldn't be too much extra work, and I picked up a 500 ft spool of speaker wire to do this job..

As do I, but we got the extra speaker for $50, and it works well. I wouldn't be opposed to using those in all of the bedrooms and bathrooms to make the whole house have synchronized music. Real wire is better, but it would cost at least a hundred per room to wire up and buy speakers for them..

Also, each speaker can independently play different music, which is nice for when Steph wants to listen to Disney music while she's baking and I want to listen to Led Zeppelin while I'm soldering

I have a 1080 I'm using with my Vive, and it works great. I would love to upgrade to a 2080 or 2080ti, but I just can't justify it. Maybe when I ultimately upgrade to a pimax

I don't think I'll upgrade anything major until I can afford a complete overhaul. I'll probably pick up a 500 Gb PCI SSD during the sales and call it a day.

Been a while since I've had a look at that sort of stuff because I know I can't afford it but from what I recall the Ryzen benchmarks were pretty good across the range and they'll generally be cheaper than their Intel comparables, but Intel will have the better high end stuff

Don't quote me on that though

What are you using it for? Amd has more cores at a slower speed, and is better for lots of multitasking. Intel has fewer cores at higher speed, and is better for gaming. That said, gaming doesn't need high end cpus, and you'd be better for getting a better graphics card than spending more on the processor.

Literally any processor. Basic computing has been seamless for like a decade.

Well, fine, some of the ultra cheap, small, low power CPUs will still chug. But you won't notice the difference between Ryzen/core chips.
