abo's alcoholic escapades and beer thread

Post #1 by åboriginal » Sat Jul 01, 2017 10:20 am

Our beer will be in stores soon. Trouble is there's only 9 cases left of it and most of them are going to several beerfests along with some keykegs.

ok kewl. all the people I need to send some beers to are going to be done by my mom so ill try and get it out as soon as I can. don't worry, its a Russian imperial stout so its only getting better with age haha. one thing I tried to do is send back with her the least damaged cans and the most full ones. the trouble we had with that fartfuck canning machine was that it would damage cans and not always fill correctly. so the ones that have some dents on them for some reason taste a little flat. I kept those or as many as I could for myself cuz I don't care. the ones I sent back with my mom were all the best of those. since they were all rejects....and there were so many from that machine that all four of us got a case plus 2 each. that's a crazy amount of loss :donger:

I don't know what's sadder down here, the fact that half of the beer shelves are weird Abita beers or the fact that places brag about stocking Yuengling

Abita has a beer called The Boot that's only sold in state. Guess I'll try a 6 pack of it. I've had their stuff before. It's ok but can definitely live without it

A lot of breweries are in southern Louisiana, but Shreveport has Great Raft which gets good ratings on BeerAdvocate and Tilted Shack if you like sours.

Also don't know how accurate this is:

Great Raft's brewery is right off I49. I'll probably hit it up sooner as opposed to later

Had Firestone Walker's Propagator's Generation 1 at Issac Newton's in Newtown. Bartender said it just went on tap today and he expects it to be kicked in about three days. Someone on BeerAdvocate said it reminds him Alpine releases, reminds me of some Port brewing releases. The weed beer is back baby.

From the presser:

AUGUST 16, 2017

Generation 1 will be available on draft in all Firestone Walker markets for approximately the next eight weeks.

Generation 1 is aggressively hopped with Citra, Mosaic and Mandarina hops, yet maintains a soft, agreeable texture. The result is a new generation IPA that is loaded with bold aromas and devilish drinkability.

http://www.firestonebeer.com/press-room/index.php?id=82

Also picked up Revolution Anti-Hero and Alpine Windows Up at Joe Canal's in Lawrenceville. Uno Pizza in Hamilton has Generation 1 and Revolution Galaxy Hero on deck in their rotation. Firkin Tavern should get Gen 1 unless they already had it and it's gone. The clueless hostess who answered the phone told me they have too many beers.

resident beer people, can you help me out?

i have a friend who i would like to bring some well done beers that she may not know/had.

She used to live in Delaware, worked at Dog Fish. She has since moved to Michigan.

Last time I saw her (in Austin) she gave Rob and I a M-43 NE India Pale Ale from Old Nation Brewing Co., and it was super great. I'd like to return the favor and bring her something to try.

i don't know a ton about her preferences, but she's a fan of that M-43 IPA, and also Carton Boat, but she's definitely a beer girl and would likely drink any style.

Any suggestions on some good things that I could source in NJ, that might be new or unavailable to her.

I'm so lost in the sauce here I completely forgot. Just gotta get muh moms to box and send em out. Good news is the don't expire for a decade haha. We'll have the new batch out in early January. 2k liters went into the tanks two weeks ago. I'll be sending her back with some of those too, next time she comes here at least.

Start here to see what she can't get in Michigan.

http://seekabrew.com/distro/compare.html

Carton and Kane are good bets if you want to give her something from NJ.

I like Alpine's Windows Up IPA, but it looks like that is available to her in Michigan.

Can't go wrong with Maine Beer Co. if you can find it. They are usually sold by the bottle and a bit pricey. Lunch gets all the love, but I prefer Another One. Both are IPAs.

Schlafly's Tasmanian IPA is wonderful and is usually released from October-February, but I haven't seen it in NJ this year yet.

Troegs is good. I like their Hop Knife IPA, but it may be done for the season. Troegs is hit or miss for me with their other offerings, I also like their Perpetual IPA, but usually opt for something cheaper that's on par with Perpetual.

I haven't tried anything from Westbrook yet, but read nice things. Westbrook is from South Carolina.

FiftyFifty is known for their super expensive stouts.

Search BeerAdvocate ratings by company for individual beers. Even the good companies put out an occasional stinker.

edit: Caveat: Seek-a-Brew distro page has not been updated since August 11.

If she's a trendy beer geek, look for something called a milkshake IPA. Oxbow and Tired Hands make good examples.

Other brands that are popular right now are Other Half, Single Cut, Tree House and Trillium.

If you're after IPAs, be sure to check the dates on the bottles. Freshness is key.

Going to check this relatively new place on Saturday for their 1st year anniversary. They just did a collaboration with Kane. Will try it tomorrow at Firken. They do small batches of one-offs. Glad there is another good brewery besides Vault that's in the vicinity.

If you had them in a different order, it would have been a better evening.

2 of the Manhattans
The wine
Remaining 5 Manhattans
4 beers

It's a bit excessive, but a reasonable excessive business dinner.
