Baseball: or ball ball

At least it worked out for the Oilers.

The Rockies are spending how the Mets should be spending and they’re the 2nd or 3rd most popular team in Colorado

Man, they should bring Greg Holland back too. Davis and Holland on the back end to close games? Lights out.

The Jays haven't signed ONE free agent yet. I hate my team.

The Jays ownership is worth more than the Yankees and the Dodgers. They could sign all the top free agents if they wanted to. It's pathetic.

The Mets are the second most popular baseball team in their city and probably the 6th most popular sports team in the NYC area.

You're probably not that far off. Granted, I haven't lived in the area in 15 years but I would imagine the teams popularity would go like:

1. Yankees
2. Giants
3. Jets
4. Knicks
5. Mets
6. Rangers
7. Devils
8. Islanders

4. Knicks
5. Mets
6. Rangers
7. Devils
8. Islanders
9. Nets

And outside of parts of NJ no one watches the Devils in the tri-state area. The Isles just struggled with irrelevancy for 40 years that's what drove people away. Now they're starting to get good and have a new arena coming. They'll be popular again. I mean, I've been a hockey fan my whole life, and I can only remember one stretch where they were good, imagine the last five years for us, times eight, that's what their streak of futility is like. The Devils have a bigger fan base when you combine how many fans are actually outside the NJ area as compared to the Isles though.

Metro area teams (in households per game):

Rangers 93,000 (up 27k from last year)

Flyers 56,000 (down 43k from last year)

Isles 31,000 (up 15k from last year, 2nd largest ratings jump in the NHL)

Devils 12,000 (down 9k from last year)

AINEC

Mind you, that's from 2014, latest I could find, but over 3 years, I doubt very much has changed.

the numbers you quoted have the Isles increasing >100% over a span of a year and the Devils decreasing 42%. How you can you doubt that very much has changed in 3 years when those jumps occurred in a single year..? Heck, based on those stats, the Devils outdrew the Islanders 21k to 16k. It obviously very much depends on how the teams are playing..

I don't spend time in NYC so can't comment on who's more popular but that's an asinine statement.

Actually, it's' probably even higher for the Isles now, you're right. The Devils have been shit since then, and the Isles have been not bad. So the gap is probably larger. Thanks for pointing that out.

Devils 0.41
Islanders 0.29

Actually, I do remember seeing that now and was surprised by the Devils. My bad, I was wrong.

Anyway, I place the Isles above because they were around before the Devils, and were successful with their Cups, so I assumed they'd have more fans because of legacy fans. IE, my dad was an Isles fan, so I'm an Isles fa kinda thing.

this google thing is easy

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Jour ... tings.aspx

Devils finished last year with a higher rating than the Islanders 0.39 to 0.32..

despite the Devils being one of the worst teams in the league and the Isles barely missing the playoffs

Their fan base was still incredibly small having come into an area where sports teams are rampant. No matter how you cut it, hockey is the lowest sport on the totem pole here and gets the least attention. Unless your parents are intense hockey fans, legacy probably doesn't mean much as they're more into the Yankees/Mets or Giants/Jets assuredly.

No-one cares about the Isles outside of Long Island. I think you're also underestimating the timing of the success. The Isles being good in the 80s vs. the Devils being good in the 00s is radically different in terms of media coverage and exposure.

The Devils also benefit from having a stake in NJ. The Rangers are still major players here and the Flyers as well.. but I would bet that more NJ kids who are picking their team choose the Devils than the others combined. The Devils do a decent job in outreach to communities to grow fans... they used to give us free tickets all the time growing up and I know more than a few friends who they converted into fans from that. The Islanders have Long Island (much smaller population base) and I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers outdrew them there either.

What annoys me mostly about the ratings is that NJ is considered in the NYC metro area. The Devils likely don't draw that well in NYC at all (well, there are probably a lot of young transplants from NJ but still) so their # households is probably almost exclusively from NJ. If you defined their market as just NJ, their RSN rating is probably incredibly higher than it is now with all of the NYC households dragging it down.

Anyway, I place the Isles above because they were around before the Devils, and were successful with their Cups, so I assumed they'd have more fans because of legacy fans. IE, my dad was an Isles fan, so I'm an Isles fa kinda thing.

Or you could have just not assumed that and listened to the people who live here

No, I still think the Islanders have more total fans than the Devils. And you're the last person I'll ever listen to, or want to listen to, tbh.

mets fans on twitter are actually upset about bringing Bruce back as if he didn't just hit 30 home runs in 100 games with them last year. some people just need something to complain about i guess
