At least it worked out for the Oilers.

New Jersey Devils: D+
In: None
Out: Patrick Maroon, Micheal Grabner, Brian Gibbons, John Moore, Jimmy Hayes
Net Value Added: -2.3 wins

Last year’s Cinderella story did a whole lot of nothing and while that’s probably for the best considering the players the Devils let go and what they’re making now, it doesn’t inspire confidence that New Jersey can repeat the magic next season. This team still has a lot of significant holes and did nothing to address them while other teams ahead and around them got stronger.

haha, this chart of addition/subtraction is amazing

I'd give us a C which is like status quo and passing. Didn't really do anything to move the needle either way.

I think the Devils, as a team, are certainly better than they were a year ago (young guys really developed, Coleman and Noesen went from total question marks to important contributors, Vatanen, etc) but a lot of teams around us really improved from the outside in this summer. The East is an absolutely absurd arms race right now

We're better than a year ago but I'm not sure we are better from the last day of the season.

part of our improvement is our coaches learning from some of their mistakes. learning that coleman noesen and mueller shouldn't be benched took a while, but new season i'm sure they'll get more time

Boyle will be, but Stafford, Hayes, and Grabner won't be. Unfortunately Lovejoy will see too much time.

Operative word there being "some". Hopefully they'll have got the rest of their shit together over summer because there is no acceptable reason to have Mueller or Butcher not seeing significant minutes from game one, the defense is fragile enough as is

I'm curious to see how they handle Johansson

I wonder if he plays well for a few months if they offer to extend him

If we're not looking too hot we can absolutely trade him and Boyle for a decent return I would think

I predict that Santini will be to the Big Club this year what Butcher was last season.

As Ray views it, one of his prime targets was the development of a Devils culture. That has been evident in the maturation of players such as Hall, Butcher, Ben Lovejoy and Hischier, among many others.

The Maven also got an interview with...

:pennywise_lou:

https://www.msgnetworks.com/2018/07/12/ ... amoriello/

“I’m back,” Lamoriello asserted, “because of my love for the game.”

Then, a pause, and a second thought: “Plus the challenge of building.”

There are no frowns to betray anxiety nor ifs, ands or buts about Lou even when I ask him why The Game still is enjoyable to him.

“Why shouldn’t I be enjoying where I am when you consider that I still have the passion on the one hand, and this opportunity to build the Islanders on the other.”
