I saw him play for his dad at the Toronto Titans tournament when he was in minor midget. His dad was the coach, and what was badass about it was that it was the Toronto Jr Red Wings. So Brendan wore a Red Wings #22 Lemieux jersey. Loved it.

He's a total team guy, good defensively, good along the boards and has a nice wrist shot. He's one of those players that the puck seems to follow around - he gets himself into scoring spots and isn't easy to push off the puck. All kinds of hockey smarts too.

He may not wear the C next year, but I'd be shocked if he doesn't wear it the year after. He led the team in scoring this year as a rookie, was co-rookie of the year with MacInnis (but in my mind, he was far better than MacInnis all year), and was Kitchener's scholastic player of the year, and from all reports, just a great kid with great attitude.

Cool to see you post. It's been a long time.

How did Max look this year? I'm headlining a charity show for the Big E foundation this fall, and I'm hoping he comes.

Haven't seen you around in ages!

Max was great this year - Kitchener had 10 or 12 rookies on the ice every night, and I think he took well to being one of the vets on the team. He's started to use his shot (and get it on the net more frequently) which made his presence on the PP more dangerous. I think having Van Ryn behind the bench has helped him a lot too - he didn't take ill-advised penalties the way he did when he was in Plymouth. Troy Smith being head coach also helped - he didn't look to be afraid to make a mistake, and was a much better player because of it.

He went to Washington's camp and there was talk that they wanted him to play up front this year - I get their thought pattern, but from Kitchener's standpoint, he's extremely valuable on D. He was also one of the few guys who would hit an opposing player.

KL, Max has been invited to the Avs rookie camp (I think it's next week).

It's okay. Going to the Rangers pretty much guarantees he's a turd on skates, anyway

We lost Brad Malone sometime this off-season. Maybe he'll be a decent player in the future but I don't really feel that he is much of a loss. Didn't seem like he had much of a future with the organization.

Today Nathan MacKinnon turned 19.

I was doing whippets in public bathrooms at age 19.

What were you guys doing?

Apparently we fired Pracey within the past week or so. He was the head of scouting. I recall him being very emphatic about O'Reilly when we drafted but that's about it; the position doesn't seem to lend itself to publicity very much.

Pracey had his hits (RoR, Barrie) and misses (Newmark, Silas) like every other scout. Will be interesting to see how the strategy changes from here. We still high on character guys like Beakley/Heard or going after skill guys like Sherbak/Frk?

Friedman

13. It didn’t register much at the time, but Patrick Roy’s open disappointment during training camp with 2013 second-rounder Chris Bigras and 2014 top selection Conner Bleackley was foreshadowing. The Avalanche fired Rick Pracey last week, their director of amateur scouting, who pre-dated Roy. Tension began when Roy arrived, since Colorado didn’t have Nathan MacKinnon atop their 2013 draft list. Roy made it very clear MacKinnon would be the pick. Can’t argue with that one.

14. Like any scout, Pracey had hits and misses, but did make some great calls. There were plenty of options at No. 2 in 2012 and the Avalanche chose wisely with Gabriel Landeskog. Ryan O’Reilly and Tyson Barrie were big hits in 2009. Calvin Pickard got the start in Montreal when both regulars were hurt, but word is goalie coach Francois Allaire really likes 22-year-old Sami Aittokallio’s technical game. We’ll see how that plays out. Other teams are free to hire Pracey now.

15. MacKinnon beat three-time Olympic short-track speed-skating gold medallist Charles Hamelin in a quick race set up by CCM. How much burst does Colorado’s tremendous forward have? A company called PowerScout hockey is starting to track both top speed and acceleration through a computer program that uses three cameras set up around a rink.

16. The sample size is small (one-to-six times per player), but growing, and PowerScout (for business reasons) won’t allow its videos to be posted. The data I did see was compelling. MacKinnon was not one of the quickest accelerators (Alexander Ovechkin was first among those tracked, followed by Erik Karlsson, Ryan Kesler and Taylor Hall), but only Carl Hagelin had a faster highest speed, at slightly above 37 kilometres per hour. MacKinnon was tied for second, with Phil Kessel. (You can see some of that information here)

Looks like Bigras has regressed a bit this year. Pretty disappointing, I had high hopes for him. He's still young and D take time, but that's not the way you want your prospects to be trending.

After a slow start this season, Magyar is picking it up and scored a beauty last night.

There should be top end D available at 10, plus another real good/quality Dman left at our spot in the 2nd. Real deep draft everywhere except for G though, so it's a good year to have some higher picks.

Since nobody has posted here in three months, I'll just say I went to the burgundy-white game this afternoon.

Rantanen looked great. Pickard looked good. Zaradov looked good, but wasn't giving much effort. None of the big guys were.

It was pretty boring. But cool to see some of the guys who will never make the team. I liked Spencer Martin a lot. He was nervous, but solid.
