Isn't Roy a UFA after this season? I was thinking that Stastny would be a replacement for Roy, if anything.

Seems to me that StL is in the same position as Colorado with centers. They have plenty of them.

I forgot about his contractual status. Since Roy is UFA, it's even better for them to go after Stastny.

Sure, they have plenty of centers but outside of Backes none belong in the top-6. Maybe Berglund, but imo he shouldn't be either the #1 nor #2 choice for a team that hopes to win the Stanley Cup.

Someone like Sobotka is a great complementary player in the right role. That's the third line. Steen is often used as a winger, so ditto for him.

Basically, I see no reason for them not to approach Stastny. Whether he fits into their budget is unknown, but it'd be a huge blow for us if he goes to a divisional rival as strong as the Blues.

You can't compare our center position with St. Louis', or most other teams' for that matter. We have an embarrassment of riches.

This would be the best possible outcome. I don't think we trade Stastny, but I doubt we'll re-sign him either. Hopefully that isn't the case.

Comparing their center to our centers is like comparing a garage full of hondas and a prosche vs ferraris.
Impressive, but one is clearly better.

What they do have that we don't is that defensive depth.

Blake Wheeler is quietly having an awesome season. Would love to pry him out of Winnipeg as I think he'd look great next to anyone on this team.

LOL. Holos must have learned to hug like that from McLeod during his short stint here.

Add Monahan to that who in any other year would have been in the discussion as the #1 pick and is already a fantastic NHLer. Has Granlund developed that much or is this your sisu bias? I don't remember anyone thinking he'd be that good a few years ago.

dempsey_k wrote:You know who's building a groundswell of young talent? Calgary.

First you've got to look at the marquee players: Johnny Gaudreau and Markus Granlund. These two could be 60+ point players in 2014-15 or 15-16. Then the next tier: Max Reinhart, Sven Baertschi, Bill Arnold, Tyler Wotherspoon, Jon Gillies, Joni Ortio. I think they've competently rebuilt that franchise. They're going to draft high again this summer and get another great player to add to that.

Yikes, deps I love you and all man but until the players show they cant consistently put up solid numbers those expectations are high. 60+ points would currently put them in the TJ Oshie, Stastny, Spezza, etc. category. Hell McGinn and Galiardi looked like they could be 60+ point getters too in a small sample size but then reality hit and i'd be surprised to see either one cross 40 points.

Nikita Kucherov has also been pretty productive as a 20 year old. Didn't play a full season and has been in and out of the lineup recently, but the kid's offensive potential is monstrous. They're a pretty fun team to watch.

For the record: Shattenkirk isn't that great defensively.

That aspect of his game has always been overplayed due to EJ's offensive production being so low prior to this season.

The guy is injured all the time and he's not a great player. Good player. When healthy.

I'm not surprised he got the money, just surprised that the Flyers locked him up. Really should max out at $3.5-4M tops.

I thought Flyers fans liked him and that he and Schenn had a solid 2nd pairing going.

I honestly haven't see enough of the flyers or MacD to make a judgement on this signing. He likely would have gotten the same as a UFA thought. Didn't Carle get around the same amount himself ?

You need to peak in on the Philly board more. Good people. Mac is not great and that deal is 2-3 years too long and 1-1.5 mil too much a year. Awful deal.

Weird Ana-Dal game last night. Ana owned them for half the game, then it turned the other way.

Fun OT in the Montreal-TB game also. It was great to see an OT game - not the shit OTs they play in the regular season, but a real one.

Playoff officiating has been terrible. That's a norm, I'm aware, but it seems like every game I watch the referees botch things up severely.

was at the CBJ game. Glad I could see Crosby and Malkin live in the playoffs, even though they only registered one assist between them they were quite clearly the best players on the ice. Also glad to have been to an OT game, even if it ended after three minutes. Great game.

If the 2013 and 2014 parallels continue, then the Blues will be losing in 2-1 next game.
