yeah, but the extra homes games provide that valuable revenue that management will use to sign a big-name free agent

BTW, here are the similarities that are floating around on sites.

2013 Round 1 Blues vs. Kings (defending Stanley Cup champions)
Game 1: Alex Steen scored game-winning goal in OT.
Game 2: Barret Jackman scored game-winning goal.
Game 3: Blues outshoot Kings by nine, got shut out.
Game 4. Blues blew 3-2 lead late in third period, lost 4-3.
Game 5: Alex Pietrangelo scored game-tying goal (his first of the playoffs, assisted by Jaden Schwartz), Blues lost 3-2 in OT.
Game 6: Blues lost 2-1, eliminated from playoffs.

2014 Round 1 Blues vs. Blackhawks (defending Stanley Cup champions)
Game 1: Steen scored game-winning goal in OT.
Game 2: Jackman scored game-winning goal.
Game 3: Blues outshoot Blackhawks by nine, got shut out.
Game 4: Blues blew 3-2 lead late in third period, lost 4-3.
Game 5: Pietrangelo scored game-tying goal (his first of the playoffs, assisted by Schwartz), Blues lost 3-2 in OT.

Mine are all still alive also.

I can't really see anyone taking out Boston in the East though, can you?

Pittsburgh could (with a very heavy emphasis on could) if Crosby and Malkin get hot.

No, but I don't watch the East as much so who knows? Pens always seem to underachieve. Maybe Habs are better than I thought? I had Lightning over them.

Price is a great goalie, they have good defense, and there are some interesting forwards to watch including Pacioretty and Galchenyuk (when healthy).

Philly-Pitt will be a joke as usual. Earn the right to be clobbered in ECF.

You're assuming the Rangers don't advance.

The officiating has been a joke and the Rags have dived all over the ice, but I think in terms of overall team construction they are more balanced than Philadelphia and will advance.

Not particularly for or against either team though. I like specific players on either one, and that's the full extent of my involvement.

Yeah, I had TB over Montreal also, but re-did my pick once I heard that Bishop was out. Not sure that would have made a difference though.

I don't think Pitt will take Boston, for the reason that Getz brought up.

Belfour

What an insane team in those days. If you put them in a time machine, same age and abilities, they'd not be nearly as good today. Not only because the new rules made Hatcher largely redundant, but talent has so proliferated in the new NHL such that a lot of teams have that same collection of talent.

The Avs could really, really use the 2014 version of Matvichuk playing next to EJ.

I think there are 4 teams in the WC who could play them tough over a 7 game series (SJ, LA, Chi, StL), but none in the EC.

Guys, I still don't know what to make of Anaheim. To me, sometimes that team looks really good. Other times? Enh. Not sure.

Pulling for StL here in the 3rd period. Well, better yet, the 3rd OT. Want this thing going 7 games - with tired teams, in case the Avs make it to face one of these two.

Now Backes and company will start taking cheap shots at the Hawks players.

I am happy that St. Louis wasted assets for Miller and can't wait to see Miller leave. :D I think its best for both Miller and the Blues if they part ways.

I missed the part about Anaheim. They are shit Cup tier. Fake pretenders.

Might be a good regular season team, but they are nothing in the post-season. I told you guys this a long time ago.

Go Kings!

We need some schadenfreude to lift us tonight. If you cannot enjoy another team's unhappiness, then you shouldn't be a sports fan.

How concretely related is that to our phenomenal one goal game record?

Other than the fact that it gives the Avs longer to look for that decisive goal, I think the early pull is a good move because it is so hard to match-up tactically.

Consider, most teams have more offensive depth than defensive depth. Not only are there just more forwards than defenders on a team, most teams defensive corps have two to three defenders that may not be particularly reliable in their own end. Furthermore, most teams only have one shutdown defensive line, although you occasionally see teams with two.

On the flip side, every team worth a crap has two scoring lines, and it's pretty common for teams to have a third as well. When you pull the goalie with say..a minute left you are going to get the other teams top defensive pairing and their top defensive line for the entirety of the six on five. When you pull the goalie with say...three minutes left, at worst you will get the other teams second pairing for one shift. You will also get to face at least one shift from an opposition line that may or may not be very defensively responsible. The attacking coach can pretty much roll his top two scoring lines in succession.

Basically, when you pull the goalie early you are usually guaranteed at least one matchup with a six man scoring line against the oppositions third and fourth best defenders, and the oppositions second best defensive line, although not necessarily at the same time. In my mind, this matchup at six on five greatly advantages the offense, especially considering that a lot of teams "hide" offensive defensemen with defensive flaws on their second pairing.
Life's like a dice game and I'm in to win.

We need some schadenfreude to lift us tonight. If you cannot enjoy another team's unhappiness, then you shouldn't be a sports fan.

So, if there's any loserly consolation that needs to go on, uhh, at least we're not the Sharks?

I admit to being optimistic about the Eastern Conference.

Demp's the only one with any balls. Redoing mine, with game totals:

Boston in 6
Pitt in 7
Chicago in 5
LA in 6

The US military might as well rename the "Sherman Tank" as the "Bruins Tank" because that is what that team is. A moving fucking tank. I don't see anyone in the East being a match for them. A healthy / hot Pens can take them down, but I wouldn't trust that happening this year. The Kings & Hawks are the only teams I see that can beat them. *MAYBE* The Ducks but that depends on which one shows up. I agree with AB that they are too hot/cold.

I agree. I think their defense needs another staple top 4 guy. Goaltending has also been suspect this series but I am high on both Gibson and Andersen to lead the team in the future/seasons. Hiller is most likely gone this offseason. Good to know the Avs also may not be the only team not to trade a UFA this season!

I'm not sure anybody can take out the Bruins right now.
Life's like a dice game and I'm in to win.

Are you referring to the NBA playoffs here?

The last few weeks of hockey has been awesome. In the first round, the Avs went to OT in game 7, for fuckssakes. In fact, the Col-Min, SJ-LA, Ana-Dal, and even the NYR-Phi series were all really good. Even the StL-Chi and Pitt/CLB series were pretty good. In this round, every series has been quite good, minus perhaps the NYR-Pitt series.

I think the hockey has been great.

Why do you feel it's been boring?
