His save % is very impressive considering he only has 2 SOs this year.

Varlamov has been godly this second half. I thought his rebound control was a bit flaky the first half, but he has shown no weaknesses since then. Right now he's easily in top-5 form.

Holden stunk for a long time, but I think he's made big strides the last 20 games or so. He's pretty good on the PP for sure. Guenin and Benoit keep getting worse, even though Benoit has been scoring a lot lately.

Also, since he's being added after the deadline, is he allowed to play in the playoffs?

TSN is making some hoopla about Patrick Roy having a press conference today. I assume it's just because it's his return to Montreal as a HC and not some big imminent announcement?

Barrie was a giveaway machine last night.

Varlamov was excellent.

How does this work again? This?:

#1 in one division with best WC record plays #2 wild card with #8 WC record.
#1 in other division plays #1 wild card with #7 WC record.
#2 in one division plays #3 in the other division, and vice versa. #2 finishers get home ice, or is it by record?

Is that correct?

No. Only crossover is with the Wild Card if necessary. Wild Card stays in whatever division they get drawn into for the 2nd round as well regardless of crossover. So a team could end up winning the division they're not even apart of.

Huh. Totally not what I thought it was. Evidently, Demp and I went to the same school in this respect. Thanks for smacking me on this, Vloo.

So, looking a lot like Chicago here in the first round then. Also going to likely have a SJ-LA or Ana-LA 1st round series. That'll be a great one. Either way.

Yeah, he's done. We're seeing why Roy dumped a 2nd round pick on this Berra dude. Would be nice to see Giguere knock out a good start or two before the end of the regular season.

I am happy EJ got another point. He has 9 points in his last 9 games, be it he had 3 points in 1 game, still 6 points in his last 8. Glad to see it wasn't a hot streak earlier in the year and he can consistently put up that level of offensive performance. So happy he didn't make team USA.

It would be even nicer to see Giguere in street clothes up in the box for the rest of the season.

Or send down to Lake Erie, where he could just not report and be done.

Dude looks like he swims in molasses out there. I feel bad for being a dick about it, but we need better. Our lack of defense is so obvious when there is bad goaltending. If he's going to suck balls, he can fuck off.

It's not 2010 anymore. I take pride in watching these guys. Andrew Raycroft performances are dogs balls at this point. Roy should fuck his face.

Wow. Our defense is a lot more noticeably bad when our goalies aren't standing on their heads. I thought Berra was shit. There is a lot to like but overall, shit. Hopefully the goaltending coach can help him.

11 goals over 2 games and 2 straight brutal defensive efforts, or at least they've looked worse than usual. Can't blame him for being a little annoyed. You want to be playing a little better in this final stretch towards the playoffs.

I thought he played well in the dying minutes of the 3rd period. I have to give it to the Jets, they did play harder than the Avs last night.

Doesn't that mean we don't suck? :paranoid:

Tonight, we faced one of the best teams in the world. We can crawl into the playoffs, don't worry. We'll get our 2 home games.

Yep, B's proving why they are legit contenders. They set a physical tone, have depth on both offence/defence and execute on their changes. I am not worried, the Avs have a long way to go before they get to the same level as the B's.

I think our lack of defensive depth is becoming more and more noticeable. It wouldn't surprise me to see Roy use Barrie as a 4th forward vs bigger teams he cannot physically match up against (Bruins, Ducks, Sharks etc.). He is a top 4 dman right now due to his offence but I really hope his defensive ability comes around sooner than later.

It will be an interesting offseason to shore up this issue that has haunted the Avs for the past decade.

Touche.

Talked with Lifer about this: best guys available to shore up defense are Greene and Orpik. MacDonald is the league leader in shot blocking, but he's really just a glorified Guenin when you think about it. Markov is turnover prone. Bigras looked impressive enough in camp this year from the sound of it (I can never see pre-season shit other than Wild games), wonder if he's ready. That'd not be nothing. The good news is that we're not saddled with a single issue on the horizon other than getting both O'Reilly and Stastny signed. But we don't have any old guys who need a cup before retiring, so we have plenty of time. In the life cycle of this franchise, we're right about around the 1994-95 Nords.

I can agree with MacDonald not being good as advertised. Looking at a few Phlly games he does remind me of Brett Clark. Someone who is decent in sheltered minutes but give him any more and he will be exposed.

I disagree on Orpik. He's gotten slower, not as good as he once was and injuries will start to concern me. He is the type of player that would slow down in a few years given his playing style. I am also quite confident he will want to make bank on his final contract. He would be fine for next year, maybe the year after but I wouldn't be holding my breath on the 3rd year.

I think the Avs may eventually have to target someone by trade. Sakic said they were in pursuit of a young defensemen this past trade deadline and I am sure the team recognizes the value of not over spending in the UFA market for players that may be marginal/short term upgrades. Even Roy during the presser after the deadline stated that none of the D players moved would have helped the team.

I think we may see something happen during the draft / offseason. I don't think it'd be RoR + Stastny (no value really at this point) being moved. I could see PaP/McGinn being moved and the Avs acquiring someone like Camerlari. I'd prefer to keep McGinn as he provides versatile on the top and bottom 6 lines.

If Ottawa can't retain Hemsky would love something with PaP around Methot or Wiecioch.
