That game was....interesting.

Talbot has been a boss since the break. Entering his playoff mode.

I haven't watched a game in a while due to work. Trying to sit through this one but it's quite boring even if we just tied it up...

Matt Duchene showing some confidence laughing in the face of Kesler. Love that.

Varly's 1st career win vs the Canucks. Tyson Barrie seems to get a point or be around the play every time the game is on the line lately.

Matt Duchene is growing on me. I think like him. I think I like him a lot actually. Good stuff.

I thought the Avs looked horrible and Varly wasn't as sharp as he usually was. Not saying he wasn't good. The two goals he had no chance on. Sarich/Beniot? should have been covering Kassian and I think the puck also got redirected to Kassisan.

EJ was shit. He got better as he went along. But was still shit. I know he was sick and it is understandable. I give him props for being in the game because as bad as he was, I shutter to think what it would have been like without him.

Stastny / RoR were both quite overall. Did their thing. Were solid defensively and created chances. Stastny's setup to Lando was sweet.

Lando / Duchene were tanks out there tonight though. Lando was hitting everyone, had a few good chances. Duchene was the best player without a doubt.

MacKinnon was good as well, but I think he has hit a wall. Nothing to surprising for an 18 year old. It was bound to happen. I just hope he can get over it come playoff time.

Overall, I'd say it was a flat game. We have seen the team play better but its games like this and the last one that make a good team. Getting wins against teams they are suppose to, coming back from being down and finding ways to win.

MacKinnon needs to be put back at center ASAP. He's not nearly as good on wing.

Landy and Duchene look pretty great right now.

he's fine on the wing as long as Landy and Staz are doing the heavy lifting for him. He's basically a carbon copy of Duchene and they don't work well on a line together. In a perfectly perfect world, I'd like Colorado's forwards to look something like this next season

ROR-Duchene-PAP
Landy-Staz-Mack
Tangs-Hishon-McGinn
goons and Mitchell

It looked kind of bad. He might be gone til next year. But if it's marginal, you've gotta bet he might play on it. MRI tomorrow morn.

Hope it's not an ACL. That dude's game is speed and quickness and change of direction.

Still hurting from the David Jones post-ACL regression.

Varly was great, but San Jose shoots from everywhere. Goalies have great save percentages against them because they shoot from every angle, even non scoring chances, so it's not as impressive.

Toews is hurt. Both teams potentially going into the playoffs without their best forward.

was at the game, didn't have time to do a write-up last night. A few quick points:

-Columbus controlled the action for most of the game with the exception of the last ten minutes. Played to their style and almost completely negated Colorado's ability to create chances off the rush. Most of the game was east-west instead of north-south.

-a lot of time was spent on and around the boards. McLeod, Landy, and McGinn were the best at board play, the rest of the team (especially MacKinnon and Barrie) were pretty bad.

-extreme difficulty getting pucks to the front of the net. I don't think Colorado connected more than one or two centering passes inside the hash marks all game.

-worst game I've ever seen Mitchell play.

-The bottom six got killed. Talbot had to do all the heavy lifting on his line. Malone and Carey aren't NHL players.

-EJ had a great game. Hedja did his job well enough that I never noticed him on ice.

-Guenin looked tired the entire game. I don't think he's got the stamina for 82 NHL games.

-Varly was great per usual.

-Johansen is a really good puck distributor, I'm surprised he has more goals than assists.

-JJ looked really good despite the own goal. Great rushing D.

-Dubinsky was everywhere.

-CBJ's ice girls have really nice funbags.

Well, sure. But I hope we're not specifically referring to last night, as Landeskog's two goals were deflections off Columbus players, and his shots weren't even on net. :-) He's been really good though.

Avs played a rotten game overall last night though. Very fortunate to have that win. Barrie, Guenin, Holden, Sarich - were ALL dogshit defensively last night. I swear, sometimes Barrie plays in a highly promising fashion, and other times he looks like a center fielder with the sun in his eyes trying to catch a pop fly.

Barrie has a lot of poise. Not sure how he's been doing defensively these past few weeks, but fuck if he doesn't have offense more or less down pat.

He's the MVP of a team that has gone from 2nd last in the league to Top 5/6. I think he probably deserves some consideration. He's been integral to success of the most surprising team in the league.

He's been great. As far as awards go, the problem is that the team that has gone from 3rd to last in the league last year to Top 9, has a goaltender MVP of his team, and has probably played better.

Stat wise, Bishop and Varlamov are almost on par. Bishop has a few more shutouts, Varlamov has a few more wins. However, Varlamov has faced around 180 more shots than Bishop while playing 1 less game and still maintains the same .926% that Bishop has. The biggest issue, honestly, is that I don't think a lot of the voters regularly watch the Avs play. Not that Tampa is a hot ticket, but they're more inclined to watch a 7pm start than a 9pm start. For me, Varlamov has looked like the better goalie in everything I've seen this season and I've seen Tampa quite a bit. Not that it really matters in the long run, could not care any less if the anyone gets awards, just happy to see the team winning again and playing an incredibly watchable brand of hockey.

Then there's that GAA thing. And the fact that TB lost their two best players this season - one to injury, the other to trade.

He's likely pissed because he went bald at 22.

That wasn't a bad hit. Shattenkirk got everyone riled up over a pretty normal hit.

GAA, and wins for that matter, are pretty meaningless when discussing a goalie's performance. I'm not saying Bishop isn't an important piece of the Lightning, just that I think Varlamov has player better and been the reason for more wins than Bishop has.

Crosby and three other regulars – defensemen Brooks Orpik and Olli Maatta and left winger Chris Kunitz – will be held out of the Penguins’ game against Colorado tonight because of unspecified injuries.

Heard Backes went all apeshit over MacKinnon?

Yeah, Hek. Good games by the boys. They came back late in the Rangers game, then took it in OT. They looked kinda sloppy in the first 10 minutes of the Blues game, then ran them over. Good stuff there. Stastny was awesome against StL.

The Backes thing is being overblown, but he was kinda cheap there. Bordeleau checked Shattenkirk hard - legally, but hard. And Shatt's stick came up and he hit himself in the mouth when Bordeleau hit him. Bloodied him up a bit. StL lost their minds a bit after that, and in one instance, Backes basically dropped his gloves and (quite easily) wrestled MacKinnon to the ice. Wasn't the right way to deal with it, but if Backes had wanted to, he could have wrecked MacKinnon, who had not dropped his gloves and wasn't protecting himself. Instead, Backes just pushed him down and hopped on.

Fun game though.

Exactly. I totally understand Backes, as the captain of the team, wanting to respond. But he did it incorrectly. He should have either A) checked MacKinnon hard as shit into the boards, as Bordeleau did to Shatt, or B) dropped the gloves with a more even (but skilled) opponent, like Landeskog or Johnson perhaps. That would have been an honorable and appropriate response. Bordeleau didn't fight Shattenkirk, he checked him.

Or, they could have simply put Reaves out there to answer to Bordeleau directly. Another reasonable response. But Backes took the pussy route, which is unfortunate. I actually like him as a player, but he did it wrong this time.
