GETZ can't contain himself!! // Aittokallio called up

JSG with back spasms.

Should be a good call up. I thought he would take Varly's place in the future but Varly is still young and a damn good no. 1 goalie (has been top 10 this year in my mind).

Excited to see the boy play.

Is he actually going to play? Guess it's hard to tell with a back issue, but do we have any back to backs where he'll see game time?

edit: Apparently he had a tilt with Darling of the Milwaukee Admirals a week or so ago. Good for him. Probably why Roy called him up. :danson:

I don't know if Varlamov is top 10. His rebound control is very suspect at times. I can live with the odd soft goal but while he has been more consistent overall, I'd like a little better technique.

Of course, I don't necessarily know goalies for shit so I'll wait to hear Stan's assessment.

Given the defense in front of him, I'm OK with Top 10 also. He's been good.

This is a good point. There was a time near the beginning of the season where the defense was clearing all rebounds well and protecting the goalies, but it was short-lived.

The Avs defense is horrible, but they generally do a passable job of covering the front of the net. They make a lot of mistakes with the puck and like to get caught in odd man situations, but they do generally stop the easy chances down low. A lot better than the Sacco years where teams would get 20 shots a night from inside the faceoff dots.

I've always wondered if Sami was a Sami or not. Would make sense to me.

Allaire has done wonders for him. There isn't nearly as much movement in terms of his feet and generally stays set and square to the shooter. Just generally way quieter in net. He still has a few moments where his instinct/athleticism overrides his technique and he'll fly around the net, but he's been way better in that regard as well. Varlamov has been in the league for a while now, but you have to remember he's still only 25 years old, and he'll probably continue to get better and refine his technique for the next few years. I'm pretty comfortable having him around long term. Pretty hard to argue he isn't a top 10 goaltender this year.

Getz isn't the only goaltender round these parts. :chicken:

Just to clarify, my issue was the price that the Avs paid to get him, then his horrendous play.

I'm thrilled that Johnson is playing great.

Roy appears to be a 'bust whisperer' as he's turned Johnson into a reasonable facsimile of what he was supposed to become.

It is great to see. EJ's playing really well.

Roy has also gotten fairly incredible mileage out of 5 defensemen who were barely (or not at all) NHL players last season - Guenin, Holden, Sarich, Benoit, and Barrie. Barrie can be attributed to development, but the rest of those scrubs? They're leveling off now, but they were/are all AHL or bench fodder 1 year ago, and are all certainly no worse than O'Brien, O'Byrne, Zanon, etc.

Actually, I suppose Benoit did play real minutes last season after Karlsson went down.
