1 game of the season doesn't mean shit honestly. Still a long way to go. Didn't we crush the Ducks 6-0 initially and they went to win the best record in the NHL last year? Not saying we'll win the president's trophy but this game certainly doesn't indicate we will be picking McDavid either.
Pretty sure this team has a lot of "kinks" to work out in terms of chemistry. RoR/Mac at wing/center will be resolved soon I'm sure. Will be interesting to see how they'll adjust as they cannot "surprise" teams anymore. Though one thing is still sure, our defense is shit.

Didn't catch the game live but I did see one period and a half or so on replay before deciding it was enough.
EJ's penalty was dumb. I don't know if he was angry for some reason after the 1st game, which I couldn't catch due to blackout restrictions, but he has to be smarter than that.
Wild were all over the Avs. Varlamov was fine and individually some of the talent like Duchene and MacKinnon was as well, but the offense had little cohesion. Might just be a matter of time, though I think we probably could use some personnel upgrade. Not sold on Briere.
On the plus side Barrie doesn't look negatively affected by the injury.
Next week they have 4 games spread out against the Bruins, Leafs, Sens and Habs. While that can go horribly wrong, it'll be a better representation of how good or bad this team is currently. Minnesota is simply better overall and w/o line chemistry, we have no advantage besides turtling.

Power of Stan, bro.

Berra was good in camp. He did play well.
Tanguay looks like shit right now. Briere looks better than him.
ROR looks like he doesn't care out there.
Defense is actually not playing bad these last two games. Barrie looks he's going to be a star and Holden has been a different player from about March of last year on.

Tanguay and Stuart look in fairly poor form. Everberg and Iginla both surpassed expectaions.
MacKinnon looks like he needs to settle down when not playing with Duchene (e.g. get back to playing with players of normal caliber).
Haven't seen enough of the team this season to make any concrete opinions, but the defense is concerning.

I think Tanguay needs some time to come back to form. Everberg seemed to click a bit, keep him in the top-6.
Since Mitchell is back, they can roll a top-6 of:
Everberg/O'Reilly-Duchene-Iginla
Landeskog-MacKinnon-Everberg/O'Reilly
Let Briere, McGinn, Mitchell and Tanguay sort it out in the bottom-6.
Didn't look at the stats, but think faceoffs have been pretty bad. Stastny is obviously missed but he also had a career season; given that it's a swap of Iginla for Stastny, we should be nowhere as bad as we are offensively. Last season the ticket was more than just Varlamov -- it was Varlamov having a Hart contending season AND the offense having crazy chemistry AND Roy being an upgrade over Sacco.
Right now it's a downgrade, at least in the short-term, offensively when it shouldn't be. Defense looks shit tier but who thought we'd still be rolling out Guenin and Holden? (Yes, Holden was phenomenal in the playoff series but he doesn't exactly have a large backing sample size of success.) Stuart has looked shaky to me albeit in very limited viewing. Barrie has continued to be a stud, but Hejda started off strong last year. Goaltending is on a prayer for Varlamov.
I say we'll improve slightly defensively, regain chemistry, and see where the goaltending winds up (it's a semi-lost cause w/o Varlamov any season). Too many things went right last time for our success, it's hard to replicate that but playoff contention will be viable barring unforeseen circumstances.

I am not sure if you mean he had a career year in faceoffs or a career year in points, but both would be wrong. Stastny has had a 53.2 FO% 2010-2011, 55.4 FO% 2011-2012, 52.4 FO% 2012-2013, 54.1 FO% 2013-2014. He was pretty much in the top 20-30 since 2010 in FO% and his best year was in 2011-2012. On average he is around a 53 FO% guy which still ranks high. Duchene and RoR have been over the map on their FO% wins throughout the years. If you meant points, his rookie season was his highest at 78 points in 82 games and his sophomore season was his highest PPG at 71 points in 66 games.
So, not a career year, in any way, from Stastny.
Yes and no. Stastny was a playmaker who was always able to cover for his partners defensive lapses, just letting them focus on offense. Iggy is a goal scorer who, and while I don't want to say useless without the puck, is not as effective as Stastny without the puck. Plus Iggy is terribly slow to start the season. I am sure he'll pick up as the season goes on.given that it's a swap of Iginla for Stastny, we should be nowhere as bad as we are offensively.
I don't know if the defense got shitter. However it certainly didn't take a step forward. More like a tippy toe forward and then a step sideways.Right now it's a downgrade, at least in the short-term, offensively when it shouldn't be. Defense looks shit tier but who thought we'd still be rolling out Guenin and Holden? Also the advance stats guys aren't wrong. Not in the regression part, that is obvious. This team does not control the puck enough during the game and gives opponents too many opportunities. That can be attributed to shitty defense, growing young offense but something that this team needs to improve on.
