I bet $100 on the Canucks to win the cup.

I cannot muster any enthusiasm.

Horvat signed to a 6 year 5.5m extension. No idea if there is an NTC or NMC. Either way, I think this is actually a very good deal.

I don't think it's a very good deal. It is about the maximum he could have reasonably asked for, especially on that term. Only buys out 2 years of UFA. Meh.

It's about as fair as one can expect and, if his progress can continue, will easily outperform the contract.

How much would he get as a UFA right now? Maybe 6m? He's almost getting paid the Ufa rate despite being cost controlled for the next four years. For the canucks to get any value out of the contract he needs to essentially develop into a 9m player by year 5 of the deal. That would be nice, of course.

It's not likely to be a contract that hurts them in any way but it was pretty much the best contract Horvat could have hoped for. His agent did him very well.

There's also value if the cap rises a decent amount in the next 6 years.

It will, but that is baked into his value.

If he is worth 9M in 5 years, then he will be a 9M player making 5.5, which pays back some of the value you gave him up front. It doesn't matter WHY he is worth 9M, whether it is due to the cap rising, his own improvement, or likely a combination.

If in 4 years he is a 6M player making 5.5M then this ends up being a crap deal for the Canucks. It does not matter what the cap is at that point.
