he had surgery for a torn labrum in his hip, which is the same surgery that turned Kesler from a 75 point player into a 45 point one, so I'm not sure how much that one is on the scouts.

Yeah I would contest that it was the surgery that led to his offensive decline

Jensen a healthy scratch in Utica.

Ha. I think Gillis is the Canucks best GM ever, but man, his scouting was somehow even worse than his predecessors.

yeah absolutely

and also the stupid philosophy he had going for drafting in the 2nd round and beyond where he took overage players who had developed as expected and thought they were closer to being productive NHLers. i mean i guess chicago and LA were pretty successful at that with andrew shaw and tanner pearson, but good lord make sure your scouts are actually able to identify talent before throwing away picks like that.

though i begin to wonder how our scouts have basically survived 3-5 regimes of front office management...

From what I recall the 2013 draft was the first when Gillis just turned to his Ontario guys instead of listening to the rest of them. So far we have Horvat, Cassels, and Subban, and Liberati apparently made some good strides this season (but probably won't be signed).

Overall when you look at the Canucks' draft history the Ontario picks during Gillis' time have all been pretty solid. Might say more about the quality of the OHL versus the ability of the scouts, though if that's the case, then the team shouldn't have completed avoided Ontario from 2004-2007. Funnily enough, right before that period, the last two guys they drafted out of the OHL in 2003 played a couple of NHL games (Brandon Nolan and Nathan McIver). And since our last "successful" QMJHL pick (Jason King) we have 11 picks of QMJHL garbage (12 if you count Bourdon lol).

@KTWonBLAZERS: Spoke with Canucks' GM Jim Benning. He's here to watch Harkins of Cougars, but likes what he sees from Deven Sideroff of @blazerhockey. #WHL

oh my god shut up jim, he is literally telling people who is on his list. harkins is ranked pretty high but sideroff is #110 on central scouting and why would you tell everybody you like him

Because your talking to a Blazers reporter and are struggling to come up with something complimentary about one of their players? I wouldn't read too much into that. But you're Cao, so of course swing away.

It just seems fairly typical for someone on the Blazers beat to hear that Harkins answer and come back with a "But, uhh, what about one of our guys, hey? Anybody catching your eye?" and then running to relay that info to their audience.

It sounds more like general schmoozing than revealing what his list is.

Yeah, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Sideroff is a draft eligible player in the WHL, not some Swedish beer league. I'm sure every other team has a pretty good read on him already.

Yes, I didn't realize how bad the Blazers were in terms of lack of 2015 draftees. Thought they were good this year/confused them with the Rockets and merkeley

The next Dane Fox!

EDIT: Hah. Fox hasn't even made it past the Canucks' ECHL team, a thing the Canucks actually have, which turns out to be called the Kalamazoo Wings.

Fox has been disappionting but he, like Archibald, were still good signings. Best thing for Fox, now, is to hope that he has a Burrows-like career trajectory and works his way up.

I think that Fox has been lighting it up recently. His numbers now seem much better than when I checked a couple months ago. He's leading the team in goals, at least. Should be on the Comets next year.

I'm bored enough to actually look it up. He had just 1 G in November and 1 G 1A in December. But since January 1 he's had 18+6=24 in 31 games. Still not brilliant but obviously has figured something out.

Saunter sounds similar to Liberati to me.

http://canucksarmy.com/2015/3/14/why-undrafted-free-agent-ashton-saunter-is-an-intriguing-gamble-for-the-canucks

I wonder if Liberati will be signed. Probably not, but he's having quite the breakout season and we lose his rights after this season.

And now we signed Hutton.

http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/2015/3/16/8226889/vancouver-canucks-sign-maine-defenseman-ben-hutton-nhl-signings-hockey-east-red-gendron

Very curious to see how he adjusts to the AHL. He could be a pretty good prospect.

Hm...there's only Pedan, Corrado, and Andersson as defensive prospects on the Comets. Cederholm, McEneny, Hutton, and Sautner are coming in next year, with Corrado probably up. There isn't much room, especially if they decide to retain Beiga/Sanguinetti, who probably deserve it.

Man I would be disappointed if that happened. Subban is surely worth a look given his offensive abilities.

Corrado was sent to the Comets today. I didn't think it was a big deal at first, but it turns out we have already used our 4 recalls allowed after the trade deadline. That means Corrado (and everyone else on the Comets) can't be recalled until the Comets are eliminated from the playoffs, and they're a pretty good team.

I wonder who our starting goalie in Utica will be next season. I can't imagine any of Eriksson, Markstrom, and Cannata will be back. Would have been nice if Cannata got more of a look in the AHL, there's probably nothing there, but he never got a real shot.

I would like it if we could get Demko signed and in the AHL next season. Or an undrafted/ unsigned prospect like Lack and Eriksson. Having a AHL veteran as our starter seems like a waste to me.

I don't know if Eriksson will be willing to stick around for another season. He's not that great of an AHL goalie and he's clearly not going to crack the Canucks roster anytime soon. My guess is he'd rather go back to Sweden than toil in the AHL.

Matt O'Connor would be a nice stopgap until Demko turns pro. Or just sign Demko.

NOW we have used our four call ups. Don't know why I trusted what I read on HFBoards.

Starting to feel the same way.

Not sure what's taking so long. I can't recall any prospects turning down an ELC and choosing to re enter the draft. If we intend to sign him it should be pretty easy to get it done.

Some context for just how dumb this signing is. Even Drop The Sopel disapproves.

Honestly until now (or maybe the Sbisa extension) I had hope that Benning would just luck out and maybe this team would stay competitive under his watch. I thought maybe his meat and potatoes guys would prove me wrong and we would have a good group of young players in a few years.

But no. We're going to suck. And we're going to suck until Benning is fired. He's truly a moron.

The Sbisa contract was my behind the curtain moment. I'm pretty ok with a guy rolling the dice and being active on trades even if he doesn't win them all, since sometimes there just needs to be a shuffling. The cronyism I could look past as rookies going for what they were comfortable with. Miller was a terrible signing but there were logical arguments on why it made sense. Fine. But the Sbisa deal is so inexcusable, when you apply that context Benning's entire foundation crumbles.

He could be signing a 19 year old facepuncher so that you don't have to lose a veteran spot on a facepuncher in the AHL.

I'll work on a new argument for when he makes it onto the main roster out of training camp. Something about the cap going down, methinks.

well.

looks like that sliver of optimism was horseshit.
