So as pointed out by "Froshaug Fan" today...

FroshaugFan wrote:The current record for points by a junior aged defenseman in the SHL/ Elitserien is 24. Forsling is on pace for 48. The Sedins had 47 and 45 points at the same age.

:punchballs:

He finished the season with 21 points, which ties him with Hedman for second all-time in scoring by a junior aged dman.

He was 14th in scoring amongst defensemen, 9th in shots for dmen, 3rd in scoring for junior aged players, and 6th overall in +/-. He has one assist so far 40 seconds into Linkoping's first playoff game.

I wonder if Benning still thinks he sold high on Forsling.

Hopefully Demko gets signed this spring. According to Benning he will "maybe" turn pro this year. Benning also said Boeser will be going back to college next season. Would have liked to see him in the AHL next season after the dominant year he has had.

On the other hand Kyle Pettit better not get a contract. He's 12th on his team in scoring with 20 points in 55 games, which is even worse than his pace last season. They better not Mackenze Stewart him.

Subban's season has been very encouraging, I really hope he isn't dumped. He's 4th among defensemen in even strength goals/ games played and 9th in even strength primary points/ games played. Not bad for a rookie.

Subban will continue to grow, to up his trade value so Benning can get more big boys in the club.

With Hutton's emergence and Shinkaruk, Gaunce, and Subban showing good signs, Gillis's drafting suddenly doesn't look so bad. Even Liberati looks like he deserves an NHL contract. Hopefully Cassels can get in better shape next season and reemerge.

It's a shame that Hodgson, Schroeder, and Jensen all had to turn out so awful. Hodgson and Schroeder seemed like slam dunks at the time, so it's hard to criticize either of those picks.

Jesus, he's in the Austrian league now. And not even a star over there.

What happened? Concussions? Attitude problem? I thought he would at least make it as a new school enforcer who could pot the odd goal.

I would argue highly-touted Schroeder that was in draft freefall until the Canucks grabbed him was anything but "seemed like a slam dunk."

Schroeder was always a "boom or bust" type of selection; though I find difficult to fault that kind of pick so late in that round.

Sorry, I meant that Schroeder was a no brainier pick, not a sure thing. His production as a college freshman was extremely impressive, as were his 2 performances at the world juniors. Plus he was the 5th ranked NA skater from the CSS. After passing on Kopitar and Perron it seemed like the Canucks finally got a steal. Turns out that Robbie Schremp was a better comparable.

As of August 15th next year. So if he does go back it's still possible that he signs with the Canucks.

It would probably be unlikely though. Most prospects of Demko's calibre that play four seasons in college do so to test free agency. The guys who sign with the team that drafted them after four seasons are generally lesser prospects who wouldn't have attracted much interest.

Cory Schneider did 4 years then signed. Agreed that it's most but there is a precedent.

I thought he did the full four years. Remember Wetcoaster making a big stink about Schneider not signing and he's guaranteed to become a free agent. Was probably a combination of Wetcoasters bombastic style and my own faulty memory.

The last Pass it to Bulis podcast was talking about Demko's family actually really wanting him to come to Vancouver (I forget the precise reasons, but before he was drafted his father was saying he hoped it was the Canucks... this was before we knew Benning well, of course). You would hope that whatever their underlying reasons are, plus the relatively clearer opening to become a starter in due time than in a lot of markets, would make him still want to come to the Canucks even if he does finish up his final year.

If Demko does sign, and Benning is still around when it happens, I'm worried he will do what he does with all his acquisitions, and simply place him at the top of the depth chart regardless of how ready he is. He will simply use his usual circular reasoning that he is a guy "we can win with" more than Markström, and just throw him in goal.

Carl Neill has been assigned to Utica. Benning has said that Olson and Brisebois won't be joining the Comets.

Neill is the only one of the three who will be AHL eligible next season. So it makes sense to get him some extra auditioning time. Reports are that his skating and decision making still need work.

Sucks that Olson won't join them, I've read many good things about him. Neill will probably flame out like all of our other QMJHL picks (why hasn't that scout been fired yet?).

Gaunce thinks too much. Doesn't skate "real well" or "rip" the puck. A cerebral player. Something Benning just can't understand.

This. And of course was drafted by Gillis. I don't expect him to last with the Canucks at all.

Do the Canucks' Q picks actually flame out worse than anyone else's? I thought the whole league's reputation was on something of a downswing (which saddens me a bit as a fan of skill-based hockey).

Canucks have signed Troy Stecher.

http://canucks.nhl.com/club/m_news.htm?id=878730

He was one of the top undrafted UFA prospects this year. Teammate of Boeser and was UND's number one defenceman. Pretty small and slight for the NHL though. Makes Subban that much more expendable.

Had the impression that most teams don't pick from there for that reason but when they do they usually pick up a decent player. We seem to take a QMJHL player every year except for 2013, the only draft where Gillis and company put their heads together and stopped listening to the idiots in the room. And every player we get from there is pretty trash.

Quick question for you guys. I have Thatcher Demko in a keeper league and know he is on your radar with respects to prospects you are interested in. Is he considered a top goalie prospect by you guys? In my league it's worth hanging on for a few years (at 0 playing time expected) with goalies since they are a prized commodity due to hoarding in the league. I'm trying to assess what my young goalies futures are at this point.

Thanks.

Demko is viewed as the top goalie in the system and future starter. Realistically two years away from seeing serious NHL time. I don't know much beyond what I've heard, however. I do know he's not been as outstanding in the AHL as he was in college. The Canucks do have a recent history of developing quality goaltenders.

Virtanen AHL update - 0 goals, 2 assists (1 on an empty netter) in 8 games this season. That brings his totals to 0 goals, 3 assists in 20 AHL games.

He has had 14 shots in those 8 games, which is about the same rate as Pedan (27/15), LaBate (20/12), or McEneny (17/10). Curtis Valk leads the Comets with 46 shots in 18 games.

Looks like he'll be down there for awhile.

I am going to guess that the historical precedent of someone at this age with comparable AHL stats (other than directly related to injury or something) turning into an NHL star is basically next to zero.

But then we'll be told that "Jake was never drafted to put up points", which sounds like a great use of a 6th overall in a good draft.
