Fascinating (and somewhat depressing) article by Corey Hirsch - http://www.theplayerstribune.com/corey- ... dark-dark/

When I think back on those years in the NHL, when I was lost completely lost in the darkness, it is painful. But I will never, ever forget the teammates who tried to protect me. I will never forget the guys who went out of their way to make sure I had somebody to talk to, even though I never told them what was really wrong.

For all they knew, I was just an arrogant kid. But they were there for me anyway.

Dave Babych.

Alexander Mogilny.

Trevor Linden.

Russ Courtnall.

Hell, even the guy I was competing with in Vancouver for the starting job, Kirk McLean, showed me kindness. I remember after one particularly rough game, he walked right up to me on the team plane and put his arm around me and said, “It’s alright, buddy.”

One guy on that list that I wouldn't have guessed, although the more I think about it, Mogilny did go through a lot when he was younger.

In what I hope doesn't become a monthly occurrence with old Canucks players, Brent Sopel has an interesting yet depressing article up on The Players Tribune

Nice read, and good of him to open up like that. Was hoping he'd include a bit more about his time in Vancouver... ah well.

Agreed on both accounts. Sopel always was a strange player with a bunch of weird rumors around him and his family. This perfectly explains everything. Always was confused how he turned from a PP specialist to a marquee shot blocker.

That's a shame he got divorced. Didn't his ex-wife blog about their experiences?

No idea but did a quick search and if she did, it's been wiped. I remember that Sopel was considered "a bit odd" because he requested that his family travel with him on long road trips and if that was denied he'd often pay for them to follow the team.

I just looked too. She did delete it all. It was called Life of a Hockey Widow.

Hello broads! Since there is no thread for introductions I will introduce myself here. My name is Phil. You may remember me from other hockey discussion forums such as HFBoards, reddit, and CDC. Unfortunately they all suck! And now that I've been banned from all of them I set out to search for a new place to discuss my favorite NHL team which is how I found this place. After reading some threads I've come to the conclusion that this board is the best Canucks board and so I just made an account here. I look forward to having a wide range of hockey related and non-hockey related discussions with all of you! Most of you I don't know but I do recognize Jyrki21, hello Jyrki21!

I've seen about a dozen of them. Some I enjoyed, they were funny at first. Most I thought were a bit too circlejerky. I don't want to shit on it because it's well done and clearly Jyrki is very creative but obviously I'm not onboard with thinking management are morons which is the premise of the whole thing so it's just not my cup of tea. It mostly makes me miss the good old Straight Jab comics.

Why not Mr. Jerky?

So I looked for the old offside comics (couldn't find em. boo) and found out the Petri Skriko guy who made them is now a bigshot director at a pretty famous animation studio! Man I remember seeing his first comics posted on CDC and thinking they were the shit then being happy for the guy when he got that newspaper gig at the straight. Great to see talented people moving up in the world! Truly an inspiration to us all. Hey Jerky maybe you can parlay your comics into a job at CNN or Salon if you switch Benning with Trump.

Will admit that they are not my cup of tea either.

Those straight jab comics were fucking awful though. They were well drawn but had zero humour.

I quite enjoy them, some of them I don't get because I'm not following the team hardcore any more but that's on me.

HF isn't of one mind. It's just that the dummies who can't think independently, including the mods, who unquestioningly follow the narrative MegaShill (MS) and y2kcanucks trot out are louder and more obnoxious than the sane posters like orcatown. But they are getting quieter by the day as reality exposes that they were wrong about nearly everything because they mistakenly dug their heels in against everything Benning did.

I don't get that sense about this place. It seems like posters here don't care enough to keep up with the team that closely right now to form strong opinions so they might lazy shit on Benning because it's easy and it was fun. But it has to have gotten old by now. At this point it isn't hard to prove that Benning is an elite GM and that the Canucks will be way better than they were in 2011 very soon, and I'll be happy to clear up any misconceptions about Benning that might persist here.

I only come here to look for his comics. I've never enjoyed comics before but for some reason I love Benning on Empty. Thanks for specifically asking me that question!

Welcome, mr loov. I'm happy to have more people to read and with whom to discuss the Vancouver Canucks.
