I'm more concerned about him been injured long long term which would mean the Canucks wouldn't be able to buy him out this summer with no cap penalty.

Wouldn't be a very high bar for Nicklas Jensen to try and reach. And you hope Kassian is top 6 next year.

Even if Kassian is still playing third line minutes next year it's not a bad place to be. It just means Jannik Hansen will continue to get those spare top-six minutes, and he is currently killing it with them so that has to be a good thing.

With the cap going down this summer, the market should be prime for buyers.

Besides, the Canucks already have three forwards they need to re-sign in Higgins, Lapierre, and Raymond. All those guys are more important to the team than Booth. They also have more need at center than at wing.

The Canucks have 14 players under contract for next season with about $4m in cap space. Somebody has to go. They also have to re-sign Tanev.

Here's what my roster would look like if I were GM:

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER
My Custom Lineup
FORWARDS
Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($4.500m)
Chris Higgins ($1.900m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Jannik Hansen ($1.350m)
Mason Raymond ($2.275m) / 3rd line center ($3.000m) / Zack Kassian ($0.870m)
Nicklas Jensen ($0.894m) / Maxim Lapierre ($1.000m) / Dale Weise ($0.677m)
Steve Pinizzotto ($0.600m)
DEFENSEMEN
Alexander Edler ($5.000m) / Kevin Bieksa ($4.600m)
Jason Garrison ($4.600m) / Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m)
Chris Tanev ($0.851m) / 6th defenseman ($2.000m)
7th defenseman ($0.700m) / 8th defenseman ($0.700m)
GOALTENDERS
Cory Schneider ($4.000m)
Veteran Goalie ($2.000m)
OTHER
Buyout: David Booth ($0.000m)
Buyout: Keith Ballard ($0.000m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,216,167; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,083,833

Though Tanev will likely get a raise. Lapierre / Higgins too.

Shave off another million if Eddie Lack makes the team.

I wonder how Aquillini feels about eating those buyouts. Gillis was pretty up front that his approach was going to be to collect some contracts other teams didn't want, so hopefully ownership knew the risks.

I was joking before, but maybe we really should just trade both Luongo and Schneider and go with Lack. I mean honestly.

Kassian will not return to this game, details expected in AV's presser.

Who wants to set the over-under on how many NHL games Nicklas Jensen will play this season?

Nah, Jensen is still junior aged. His contact slides unless he plays five or more NHL games.

i think the rule is actually 'more than five' games. that's why i chose 5 as the over/under

one thing that may stop jensen from being called up in place of kassian is this tweet from a couple of days ago,

He's a big-bodied goal-scoring winger who's been scoring goals. Something this team has lost two of in its last two games. He'll get some games whether he's ready or not.

Yup. He's probably going to be on the roster if they make the playoffs. AV will just stuff him on the 4th, so it's not like there can be a huge drop off.

And yeah, everything I've read is 5 is ok, 6 flips the switch.

also, sestito is hurt:

Fighting is fucking stupid.

I'd be in favour of getting rid of it completely if the players could learn to keep themselves in check on the ice without it (though it's not like they're doing a great job of it now). Still, the negative effects on the fighters and the culture it promotes (violence as not only a legitimate but the de facto means of conflict resolution) isn't worth keeping around anymore in general.

That was a really fucking stupid fight, too. You've been dominated for almost the entire game and scored a nice goal against the flow of play. I know, why don't we fight to let the Blues get off the mat in a hurry. Pissed me off.

I enjoyed watching crazy fighters in a different era, like Gino, or when there is a real bad guy, like after that Petit/Walker cheapshot, and loved Rypien because he was talented and actually a smart, strategic fighter (used a shell defense, unheard of in hockey), but otherwise yeah, I rarely even pay attention now. They are almost always sloppy and meaningless, and it feels a bit like NASCAR just watching to see if someone gets hurt.

hate fights and its even worse when they wait a few seconds gliding in a circle like last night.

It would have been funny if Kassian had tripped on that stick (and not hurt his back).

Not even the brawl, just the revenge. Wasn't this the incident that had Babych and Linden going after him in the rematch? Or was that someone else? Anyway, Bertuzzi ruined that fun.
