Given that the Canucks' fate defies all logic, I expect a 10 game winning streak.

So Kesler was supposed to be out 4-6 weeks and it's almost been five weeks so far. If Gillis can get a NHL center at the deadline the Canucks should be a lot more stable.

I feel for tripwyre. He'll be heartbroken when his favourite Canucks young centre gets traded for the second year in a row.

If I recall correctly, him and Ernie were the loudest about how silly the suggestion of trading Hodgson would be, how there was no chance, they actually made me completely re-think my position.

I don't remember being loud but it didn't seem like a very good idea to create a hole that would be hard to fill by trading away a young scoring center. Seemed like the team might have problems if Kesler or Henrik went down to injury.

I wasn't advocating it, just reading the tea leaves that Hodgson wasn't a playoff fit on an AV team that loves big, burly centers in the bottom 6. And I see Schroeder as a similar situation.

I interviewed Cody in pre-season last year and thought he was a total dick, but I also thought that the media had largely made their own bed on that one. Also, despite what I or even the team thought of his personality defects, fact was that he gave them a major secondary scoring punch both from the third line and the second unit PP that was instrumental in giving them a number of big victories over tough playoff competition in January and February of last year, something they've clearly lacked since dealing him.

I do love Kassian though and think that move will payoff big time down the road, but it certainly wasn't a win-now move.

Schroeder is much more of an AV player though -- speed to burn and he busts his ass on D, which were Cody's biggest issues. I'd imagine Vigneault is quite happy with his game right now and in fact I know he is, because he rewarded him for his game last night by putting him second in the shootout.

Yeah, I think you've got some rose tinted glasses about Schroeder, since the Canucks have a huge need for centers but Schroeder was in the minors just over a week ago. Also, his faceoff numbers are atrocious which basically precludes him from playing a regular 3rd line center role on the Canucks.

Fun fact: the Canucks are 28th in the league in faceoff percentage. The last 4 seasons they've been 5th, 7th, 1st, and 3rd.

I think that face off percentage is one skill that is much more teachable and I hope malhotra sticks around to maybe teach Schroder and the other guys. Kesler had dreadful percentages as a 20 year old but he learned from what's his face and is pretty good now.

You know, I don't even remember what I'm thinking of.

Kesler came up as a 19 year old and played 28 games with a 40.8 FO%. Over the next two seasons he was at 46% in faceoffs; it was the weakest part of his game by far. Then in 07-08 it jumped up to 53% and he's been consistently above that mark ever since (his career mark is 52.8.) I mean, he also scored 20 goals that year and it was his breakout year in many ways, but I could have sworn they acquired someone that season who was a specialist, and I could have sworn other players on the team had impovements as well. But it might just be a false memory. Looking over that 07-08 roster, I certainly don't see any candidates.

Meh, the point is, young players can learn the art of winning faceoffs.

But not everyone improves at faceoffs. This may be another area where Schroeder's lack of size and reach work against him.

Faceoff ability has more to do with technique rather than size and reach. Specifically I think of Vladimir Sobotka, who is 5'9 or 5'10, but he's just great at faceoffs. I can think of a bunch of other smallish guys who are pretty good, like Pavelski. Course, on the flip side, Brian Boyle and Joe Thornton are great too.

Wellwood's good at faceoffs. Yanic Perrault was not a huge dude, although bigger than Schroeder I guess. I don't know. It's just one thing that i wouldn't worry too much about for a young player.
