Brandon Sutter Contract Pool

Winning in spite of ourselves...

How much do you think Sutter gets when Benning hands him the blank cheque?

I like that none of us have faith that Benning will pay less than 4 million for a 30 point centre.

The Bärtschi signing is literally the only thing keeping him from going 0-for in my books. With a guy who has made more than, say, 1 move, that is actually mind-blowing.

I've actually gone through this thought experiment.

Imagine we had no GM at all. And we made no moves at all unless we were forced. Sort of like in a video game where a team is controlled by the computer which makes no moves except for re-signing players and making trades if it absolutely has to. So let's say the computer just takes the first offer it gets for Kesler, re-signs Tanev, Santorelli, Richardson, Matthias, and that's that's basically it. Would we be in worse shape? We'd have no Vrbata, so that's too bad, but otherwise I think I'd take that team.

That's the famous GM-vs-potato experiment... was it Leafs fans who did that with Nonis? The similar potato experiment absolutely applies to the Canucks scouting staff, as has been demonstrated. There is literally no need for them to scout when others do it for them much better.

But yes, it's not like "failure to improve" has been the knock on Benning... it's "actively making worse". I love when dudes like Bowie Horvat claim that this is all part of the plan... as though becoming bad was the end goal, rather than the byproduct of rebuilding. If the Canucks wanted to be bad, they could always bench the Sedins and trade Chris Tanev for a 2024 7th rounder.

I suppose in a vacuum the Bartkowski signing isn't horrid, but it brings with it an opportunity cost.

The Bartkowski signing is pretty bad because he was scratched for almost half of the Bruins' games and plays like a better skating Sbisa. A healthy scratch who isn't very good should be getting a million max, especially when there's no cap space to be loose with money.

Friedman's guess is $4.4m and a Pittsburgh article says he's looking for long term, 5 year range.

Mario Lemieux could have been terrible at "playing defense", but he barely had to because he would control the puck and threaten the other team's goal the entire time he's on the ice. Brandon Sutter is the opposite of that, he "acts defensive" really well, but it doesn't end up benefiting the team on a whole.

Benning is pursuing guys who "look" a certain way, rather than those who actually positively influence their team's chances of winning. This approach was basically exposed as wrongheaded 15 years ago. It was the entire life-lesson of Moneyball.

And this was what Jimson Hogarth took from it:

Jimson Hogarth wrote:Sutter not like Mario Lemieux? {facepalm emoticon}

That might actually be the stupidest thing I've ever read on boreds. Seriously.

There is no proper way to respond without getting an infraction. This literally PROVES he has no analytical skills.

I don't know much about him but I mean like, the guy has not scored a goal in an 131 game career. How does he fill any sort of need here? How many goals are the defense going to score this year? five? With 1 at even strength?

He's a less physical better skating version of Sbisa. You'd think he'd rack up more points with his skating and occasional puck moving. It's really amazing that Benning has handpicked two defensemen who are toolsy but have two cent heads. The perfect defenseman to go for is Franson but needless spending and overpayment has gotten the Canucks to where they are now.

According to Friedman, these are the numbers. That's 1.1 less than I expect but about 2.2 more than he's worth. Over five-years. The Canucks are fucked even after this idiot is let go.

Our Roster with a potato instead of Benning:

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Higgins - Santorelli - Hansen
Matthias - Horvat - Kassian
Kenins - Richardson - Grenier
Friesen

Edler - Tanev
Hamhuis - Garrison
Stanton - Bieksa
Corrado, Weber

Lack
Markstrom

Total Cap Hit: $62.345M

Picks + Prospects we would still have:
2nd (Baertschi), 2nd (Sutter), 3rd (Kesler), 3rd (Dorsett), 3rd (Pedan), 5th (Prust), 7th (Garrison), McNally, Costello, Forsling (or whoever potato picks in the 5th).

Picks + Prospects we wouldn't have:
1st (Kesler), 2nd/ Vey (Garrison), 2nd (Bieksa), 3rd (Kesler), 3rd (Sutter), 3rd (Lack), 7th (Lack), Pedan, Clendening (lol nevermind).

So our forwards would be weaker without Vrbata, but our defence and goaltending are stronger. Plus we're $9M under the cap. Assuming the potato can the a 1st for Kesler, the picks/ prospects are comparable, though I would favour towards potato.

In one year our GM went from Vrbata @ 5M to Brandon Sutter @ 4.4M

I have to assume at this point that the Vrbata signing was 100% Gilman's doing and Benning's disappointment with him led to Gilman's dismissal. IT is sadly the most logical explanation of this absurd situation.

Yeah, but the cap went up, so it's actually more like...

*carry the one*

Vrbata @ 5m to Sutter at 4.25m. Much more reasonable.

The Canucks are a post-lines team. The ideal is that all 12 forwards make the same amount of money and play the same amount of ice time. It's called Kindergarden.

This actually makes a lot of sense. A European scorer with a reputation for not being a playoff player? Definitely doesn't sound like Benning. Although he shoots well, which does sound like Benning. But would Benning actually know who he is?

In order feed Lindenning's confirmation bias, all Sutter needs to do is throw one big hit in his first game and they'll think he plays with size for the rest of their lives.

I remember last year when that video came out, people were trying to figure out what the blue and black meant and nobody could figure it out. Turns out that nobody has the same thought process as Benning and I'm now convinced that blue means "interested in" and black means "not interested in".

At the time we were like. Hmmm, this guy seems kind of ... dumb, but maybe he's just eccentric.

There is something I love about the fact that he includes the JERSEY NUMBER on his board. Like he barely has enough room to fit any useful information there, so that's the one he chooses.

I love the idea of our GM spending 2 hours manually updating the jersey numbers on his whiteboard while other GM's are planning how next to fuck over the village idiot.

If I recall, "Philadelphia" is spelled something like "Filudelfeeya" with one of the E's backward.

I love how the Garrison contract was considered a toxic asset. SMH, as you kids say.

Our GM is delusional. I know that's not news to anyone, but still.

Sun: He just signed a five-year contract extension worth nearly $22 million, which is a lot of money for someone who has never had more than 40 points in a season. Sutter should be excited.

Benning: You win with players like Brandon Sutter. I’m not comparing him to Patrice Bergeron, but when I was in Boston, Bergeron was a great two-way player for us. Look at Jonathan Toews (in Chicago). That’s how you win in the playoffs. When we look at Brandon Sutter and all the things he brings, he’s going to be in our next wave of core players. I believe his best hockey is still ahead of him.
