Luca Sbisa has already been penalized for hitting someone in the numbers in the neutral zone.

Need more play-by-play hooker. We're going to need you to be the Canucks' broad MVP this season.

I turned the TV on and saw Luca Sbisa with the puck skate up casually as last man back. He almost lost it to the forechecking Sharks forward, who literally just had his stick in front of him. This is gonna be a great season.

Nah, it only took so long because Jonathan Wall had to convince John Weisbrod and Mike Addesa that we didn't have a special farm team in Tuskegee.

Ryan Miller has officially let in a goal on his first shot against. Starting with a 00.0% and working up, I guess.

There was one shift where Vey, Prust, and Dorsett had the puck hemmed in the Sharks zone, and they have actually looked pretty decent otherwise. Hope it actually works this season.

It always a good sign when the AHL back-up puts up better numbers than the NHL starter.

Atta boy Miller. First game and already looks worse than our backup backup. At least Markstrom looked solid, but like every year how long will that last.

Sbisa taking dumb penalties from last night, good to see he's already rounding into mid-season form.

I liked Imac's response to why Subban was sent down "well uh they're playing in france so this will give him more time to gel with utica"

Actually liked the look of the young guys left from the final couple years here with Gillis and co. Hutton looked pretty smooth, and Horvat looks to have taken another step. Pretty sad, but McCann looks miles ahead of Virtanen at this point, and of course, given the lovely nepotism, Virtanen will really be the only one given the shot of making the team.

Still don't understand why Gaunce isn't playing centre or why Subban was sent down, other than our supreme talent overlord thinking they aren't ready. Also, Miller hilariously looks even more dog-shit than last year. Amazing. Somewhere around .800 sv% and 6 goals against in 4.5 periods.

Might as well go full Oilers and load up on youth as that's something fans can buy into, if you are going to tank might as well be with some promise of the future. But instead we have roster spots taken up by overpaid plugs and other than the Sedins, really the only marketable player is now Horvat, who will probably be a fan whipping boy when he only puys up 30 points.

Hutton is interesting in that I can't even remember the last time that the Canucks had a late-round pick that looked like a useful pro. McCann has been the best thing about this pre-season, and his strong play almost redeems picking Virtanen at 6. ...almost.

Also last night Kypreos said Vrbata was the Canucks' best scoring threat and I wept because it was true.

What are the criticisms of Virtanen? Is it just he was picked too early? If he was #12 would we be celebrating him? Big hitter and a finisher seems like a pretty good combo, even if he's not a playmaker (basically the anti-Kassian).

Basically, yes. He projects right now as a crash-bang 3rd liner. It would be fine if he were picked 23rd (probably not 12th,) but right now it looks like a poor pick at #6 and we really needed to get somebody elite with that pick. That both Nylander and Ehlers had better seasons last year just adds fuel to the fire.

So does he not have the skill level to be a top 6? Because it seems like that's the kind of player you put with a playmaker and form a good line.

I'd say Corrado looked real good in the first two years. Reminded me of a quicker Bieksa. He's dropped off a ton since then, unfortunately.

He has a first line shooting ability but I don't think he has the hands or smarts to be a top 6 guy. We all expected a 1st/2nd line type guy with that pick, and we ended up with what looks to be a 2nd/3rd line player. He's more of a complementary player, not someone who creates anything by himself.

It also sucks because from all accounts Nylander looked like a player you could build a line around before the draft, and he's done even more to solidify that thought. But then the narrative of "BC-born player" trumped hockey playing ability, further showing that the organization is still tone deaf to the criticisms of passing over BC born players in the draft. People would be totally fine with passing over Brendan Gallagher if John Klingberg was picked instead, but not if you take Adam Polasek.

Virtanen's got a good shot but his hands are Jannik Hansen-esque and he's a useless idiot away from the puck. He projects to be Raffi Torres. It is a total farce he was picked in the top ten of his draft class, nevermind just outside the top five.

What's annoying is that we basically picked sixth overall in a year where the biggest drop off in talent was after the top five, because of course we did.

There were concerns before the draft that his goal total was inflated by luck and his finishing wasn't as great as the stats would indicate. This past season did nothing but reinforce those concerns. If he isn't an elite finisher, then there was no reason for him to be picked so high. Now the reason for his poor season could have been the shoulder injury, but if that's the case there is no guarantee that he gets back to where he was before the injury.

Also what Nylander did as a 19 year in the SHL and AHL was pretty special.

If they see him as a center then he should be a real threat to steal Vey's spot on the fourth line. However he spent all of last season playing LW, and management seems convinced that's where he should play.

Forgot about that.

He should definitely make it over Brandon Prust, then. So should Kenins. The forwards *should* be

Sedin Sedin Burrows
Baertschi Horvat Vrbata
Higgins Sutter Hansen
Kenins McCann Gaunce
Dorsett

I know they're still just playing with lines, but apparently Virtanen is getting to play with the Sedins and Vey is playing with Vrbata and Baertschi. Like....do these people understand the concept of merit? Or are they literally throwing shit up onto those white-boards? As someone who thought Vey could learn how to at least, play somewhat effective non-contact hockey at one point, the guy has gone out of his way to make me look foolish.

Boy, McCann has a pretty shot. Too bad this tiny sample size of shooting percentage won't influence Benning and co., but a tiny ten game stretch of Sbisa playing well turned into a 10 million dollar boat anchor.

I actually don't mind our forwards if McCann and Gaunce/ Kenins are in the lineup instead of Vey and Prust.

Now we just need Markstrom to take over for Miller and Hutton to replace Sbisa.

20. Christine Simpson and I taped a commercial with the Sedins, and while we were waiting, Henrik said a few of Vancouver’s young players would surprise in the preseason. Hopefully he wagers on sporting events for extra spending money, because this prediction was right on. Vancouver has some interesting decisions to make as Ben Hutton, Jared McCann and Jake Virtanen press for a roster spot. When asked if anyone specifically impressed him during their summer skates, Henrik picked Brendan Gaunce, also pushing for time. As the salary cap flattens, a few GMs indicated they believe that makes it even more important to be patient with your young players, but GM Jim Benning is warning his vets he’s prepared to go young.
