I fully expected them to lose all three games against clearly superior opponents but now nobody takes them seriously so they get complacent

Getting the first three win streak of the season when the only positive outcomes left is losing games is the most Canucks thing ever.

It's ridiculous. You couldn't write it better.

Don't see why? The impact of a single win or loss would be lessened in general. Particularly if the loser point sticks around, there would always be a cluster of teams with pretty similar odds, including those not far out of the playoffs. I'd say the need to be mathematically below another team in order to increase your odds, even if you have a very similar number of points, encourages tanking much more. That is, if winning a game on the last day of the season launches you from 2nd-worst to 5th-worst because of three teams with similar points in the standings, there is a very magnified impact from that one result.

Pretty sure the lottery has failed in spectacular fashion and no tweaking of the odds will change anything.

Only options are to fully randomize at least the top half or abolish the draft.

I don't really know whether he'll be good or not, but not letting him get a real NHL look before dumping him is about the stupidest thing you can do. It's the anti-Hodgson play.

the canucks are gonna take jake bean in the draft, who is apparently not good at defense and plays defense as his hockey position

An attempt to measure true coaching impact
by Travis Yost

Let’s think about line combinations for a moment. Every team’s had dozens of line combinations throughout the season – some have lasted for a long time, some were broken up very quickly. There should be some relationship between the combinations that stuck and successful play. Conversely, one would assume that the line combinations that were split early on were submarining team’s performance.
So, let’s look at those relationships. I ran two simple correlations: total ice-time together versus offensive performance together and total ice-time together versus defensive performance together. Which team managed their lineups most properly?

Image

..

On the other end of the spectrum, I can’t figure out what Vancouver was trying to accomplish this season. Most of the teams, either knowingly or unknowingly, played their better line combinations more than their weaker line combinations. In Vancouver it was legitimately the opposite from a shot generation standpoint – the groups that generated less offence seemed to stick around. Why? I’m not sure I have a good answer to that question.

..

As for a team like Vancouver or New York? Well, their preferred deployment choices seem rather puzzling, since less frequently used lines generally outperformed more frequently used lines. To that end, it certainly seems like some coaching criticism may be warranted and justified.

Right?

Like I'm pretty sure I'd rather be giving him a look right now instead of watching Emerson Etem skate laps without doing anything.

I like Etem. I think he has the makings of a good bottom-6 forward. Would much rather have Shinkaruk playing over Pedan, Vey, and Granlund.

I'm torn on Willie. On the the one hand, someone like Julien would be a big upgrade and Willie is barely qualified to coach at the junior level. On the other hand, this team might be bad enough under his direction next year to really challenge for 1st overall.

Yeah. Out of all the "toolsy" skills you can have (and what this management is obviously influenced by), skating is probably the most useful. He doesn't do much with the puck but as a fourth liner I think he's a significant upgrade over Dorsett.

He's just skilled with the puck to not have plays die on his stick and big enough that working the corners shouldn't be a problem if he accepted that as his role.

hes a shit coach but i'm fine with keeping him around if itll act as a catalyst towards the owners / management fucking off into the sun sooner than later. if you fire him then it ostensibly buys linden another season to just fuck our shit up

dunno what you guys see in etem. hes just another welsh, bolduc, ebbett, dalpe, isbister, etc. to me. waiver fodder

I'm a little drunk. Saw this thread and laughed thinking about 20 telling me the team got ripped by WD for not trying hard enough in warmups. Said the look on guys faces around the room was hilarious.

Please...somehow...fire this management group. I know it won't happen. I also know that this can't last forever. Doug Maclean was the GM of the Blue Jackets for 10 years, though...

It seems weird that of all possible draft scenarios, the most unlikely is that we draft where we finished.

could be wrong but i think they shitcanned the mod(s) responsible for that. pretty much everyone now agrees that benning is a mong, although most struggle to intelligently articulate why

As a rule I try to avoid all punctuation with him (even question marks), but sometimes the spacing available means I have to bend that to fit two sentences on the same line.

The bottom three teams will all have their coaches return next season.

The very worst team paid their coach $8 million with a mandate to be the worst team in the league. Successfully achieving that objective, he will come back next season for another $8 million.
