Are Chiarelli, Benning, and Sweeney the three worst GMs in the league?

Hahaha... well, Benning isn't the only guy obsessed with character and the like, it seems. Hockeywidow's posts probably were a lot of foreshadowing for the Hall situation, and if the rumors are true, Subban and Pacioretty may not get along or something.

The Hall deal looks bad but if you squint you can kind of make sense of it, if everyone around the league believes he's a locker room cancer.

Subban though ... that is just insane. What in the actual fuck.

You'd rather have Weber for ages 31-41 than Subban for ages 27-33? Because I think that is insane.

Weber's been carried by Josi for maybe the last three years. He's gotten much slower and bleeds shots against.

12. Looks like Dan Hamhuis is going to free agency for the first time since 2010.

“There are a couple of differences,” he said by phone from B.C. on Wednesday. “Right off the hop, Nashville made it clear they weren’t going to pay the money I was going to be getting. They wished me good luck and thanked me for a great nine years. This was a little different. The Canucks mentioned numerous times since last July that we would talk about a contract extension. We were excited about it right up to beginning of June. That’s when we were led to believe an extension was probably not coming. There’s always a chance it could work out, but its pointing towards their priority is a high-profile forward or two.”

Is he bitter at Vancouver?

“No, no. I don’t want people to think that. I believe all their talk was genuine. This is a fluid business. You’re not sure what the cap is going to be, what trades are out there. Ownership treated us unbelievably well here.”

No wonder why agents are probably hating Vancouver now.
35. Privately, Jim Benning felt terrible about his comments putting heat on Marc Bergevin. The real loss here is what this will do to his future interviews. Benning is must-listen because he’s so blunt and honest. As an executive, tampering rules make it imperative you watch what you say.

Maybe it will be nice for Benning not to completely tip his hand to everyone in the league.

I don't think there's any scenario where the Hall deal makes real sense. It's like the Thornton deal. They couldn't have come close to maximising return because they were being stealthy or whatever.

I haven't had a goatee in years!

Maybe I'm wrong on Weber. In the past few seasons, I've only really been watching Canucks games and tuning the rest out, so I don't have a good grasp on Subban or Weber past, like, the 2014 Olympics.

Weber's still an elite offensive defenseman, but his defensive game is just bad. He's never been a particularly fast skater and I guess he's slowed down considerably. Subban on the other hand is both an elite offensive defenseman and retains possession enough that he's not allowing boat loads of shots against.

My favourite graph highlighting the differences, and I probably wouldn't have believed it had I not watched Nashville so much in the playoffs:

I'd probably choose 2014 Weber over Subban. But he's slipped a lot and the contract is way worse.

Even if you think Weber is better, the age and contracts put it heavily in favour of Subban.

The fact that he's four years younger and on a far more reasonable deal basically makes it a win; that he's a better player even today is almost like a bonus.

As it turns out, nope. 28M of the 36M are in signing bonuses, which can't be bought out.

Benning has his David Clarkson deal.

to be fair, im pretty sure every big free agent was signing a clarkson type deal today. okposo and ladd basically have the same contract as eriksson. it's less of a "benning and weisbrod are stupid" and more of a sign that the FA market is shifting because players want to protect themselves in the case of a buyout. david clarkson is a UFA pioneer.

anyway i don't expect benning and weisbrod to have cared in any case. eriksson's agent probably faxed them a contract and they just signed it.

pretty good deal honestly. team is going to suck dick for the next little while (until basically everyone including aquilini is gone), so i'd rather have that money tied up in an actual first line forward than split among dorsett types in the bottom 6 (where it would be used otherwise). seriously when eriksson is 36 making 6 million he'll still be better than 3 dorsetts combined.

also fuck aquilini for vetoing the hamhuis trade.

The Canucks are going for it. The playoffs, that is.
by JASON SHITSFERD

Deep down, the Canucks understand their current roster is probably not enough. It’s why, quietly, they’ve been trying to make deals which would lead to the acquisition of another impact player, one Benning indicated is a forward.

“If I had a crystal ball, I would say we’d try to add a winger who had some grit and size to him, who can score,” Benning said.

Such players do not generally come cheap.

Maybe that’s why, on the first day of free agency, it’s believed the Canucks were looking to move a player on an unappealing contract along with a valuable asset in an attempt to clear more cap space to chase a forward.

Could it be Evander Kane or the apparently available Gabriel Landeskog? That’s anyone’s guess.

Some around the league suggested a possible Luca Sbisa trade was being discussed this weekend.

If true, it would make sense because Gudbranson is essentially an upgrade on Sbisa, who will be battling for ice time on the third defensive pair.
http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-off-season-crystallizes-plan-theyre-going-for-it

two things,

1.) i like how our autistic gm lists off grit and size before mentioning scoring ability. good thing were stacked with high scoring players, right? get it? its sarcasm. im being sarcastic. because we dont have high scoring players. because our gm is a mong. genghis mong. thats our gm.

2.) who in sam hill are we willing to trade in order to acquire said IMPACT FORWARD? gonna meep meep the fuck out of this bitch, roadrunner style, if jimothy trades away christopher tanev

From the same source Jyrki was PMing earlier:
Q: So it's widely rumoured that the Canucks are looking for a forward via trade after Benning essentially confirmed as much. Any idea who they're after?
Also any info on how the Canucks front office feels with how July 1st turned out?

A: The Family is appeased for a while with Loui Eriksson signing his deal.
But they are demanding another winger before training camp. so Benning has 70 days or so to make something happen
I know that team has started contract extenstion talks with the Sedins
2 year $10 million dollar deals

Q: What happens after 70 days?!?! Is Benning's job on the line?
Is Evander Kane the actual target? And who is being floated around as the return for Tyson Barrie (if that's true).

A: Nothing happens to Benning. Benning will be judge if this team makes the playoffs. even then if they miss. Willie will be the first to go. Tyson Barrie is not happening. forget about it. There is interest in Evander Kane for sure. whether a deal comes out of it is too early to tell
