So are we all holding our breath for mass stupidity today? Passing on Tkachuk once Dubois is taken? Tampering fines? Surrendering more draft picks for a foundational role-player?

Wooo-ee, the possibilities are endless. It would be funny if it wasn't killing the team that the next GM will have to work with.

So anyway, here is Benning on Empty #17, "The Sharper Image":

This is what, the third and fourth time Benning has publicly stated his interest in a contracted player?

I wonder if the league sent out an email blast again.

Disappointing. Tkachuk would have brought some excitement.

Of course the Oilers get Puljujarvi one pick before us. Ugh.

The pick itself, I have no real problem with. Wasn't very high on Tkachuk and Finnish Defenceman was the guy I figured they pick if Dubois wasn't available.

Biggest hope is all the negative publicity forces the Aquilinis hands.

Defense isn't even the positional need. They traded their only close to NHL calibre forward prospects away in the last 6 months. Oh but Vancouver fans won't support a rebuild, lolol.

Elite defensemen come from all over the draft – they're harder to predict. If you have a top pick, use it on the surest thing around – a high-scoring forward!

Aaaaaargh. I also feel Sergachev will be better because Canucks.

How do we manage to screw ourselves in this draft?

Dubois gets jacked, and we draft a defensemen.

A freaking defensemen. If you're expecting to be successful, you're not going to draft as high as 5th every year for christ's sakes. Draft a forward while you can, jesus christ. Sedins are going to play until they're 40 on the top line, aren't they.

Also, I get that offensive defensemen are rare, and #1 defensemen are rarer. But Juolevi doesn't appear to be either, so we draft him anyways? What the fuck Benning

I like Juolevi way more than anyone else that was available. Wasn't overly high on Tkachuk. Like the idea of a 30-40 point top-pairing steady defenceman. Biggest problem was not having a 2nd round pick and wasting every other pick in the draft on guys with 0 offensive potential.

Yup. Does free up a contract slot and gives a loyal guy a chance to play somewhere else. Even if he winds up in Europe, he's still in a better position than playing here.

But clearly a number of things changed following that summary (most of all with respect to Tkachuk), so who knows whether sweet-talking Weisbrod has turned Linden onto the idea of bringing all that hard-working, sneering truculence into the lineup.

BTW, anyone else think that if Lucic does come (and I still think he won't), he will be utterly checked out? He seems like the type of guy who will consider himself a local hero, and just dog it once he has this retirement contract in place.

Hockey Widow wrote:Lucic is reluctant to play for Vancouver with all the hometown pressure, family and friends.

His heart right now is Edmonton. He has not committed to anything, he can't, but word is that's where he'll go. No rules bending there eh? I've been told that Vancouver is pretty much off his list. He also doesn't think Vancouver is as close to being finished with their rebuild as either Calgary or Edmonton and he has a better chance at another cup with the Oilers or Dallas.

Edmonton wants, desperately, his leadership in the dressing room. Apparently there is a snow problem, again, in Edmonton and they hope Lucic's influence can help eradicate it. He's the shovel so to speak. He's pumped about the chance to play with McJesus. Chiarelli laid out his plan to improve the D, which involved Demers and a big trade. He sees Edmonton as a definite playoff team. Mostly Edmonton needs to do some snow removal, one way or the other. Interesting that they would go after Kassian.
...
One more thing, he was told his primary job would be to protect McJesus, both on and off the ice.

Oh and Hall is a major dressing room issue. Who knew.

Well, one of the things I was told is Stamkos is just not interested in Vancouver, at all.

Other things that seemed to get somewhat confirmed for me was that Benning and Linden "do not appear" to have complete control. There is a sense of differing views on how to proceed. Where there is smoke.....

I felt gut punched again by some of the things I heard.

From the turmoil in the front office, separation between owner and management, player discontent, treatment of vets, on and on it goes.

It goes much deeper than just Higgins. A pattern going back to Mitchell and then Luongo. Parting of NTC. Blocking trades and trade requests. Getting too young to fast with over reaching expectations placed upon the vets given the lack of support. Broken promises. You've all heard the stories. Miller apparently had two more offers before he signed with us now feeling like he was sold a bill of goods. He'd welcome a trade.

Agents cautioning players against signing in Vancouver mainly because of the instability of ownership. I don't mean financial. No clear direction. Unrealistic timelines. The days of being treated with respect have dwindled, in the opinion of of some agents and ex-players. Agents feel trade protection has no meaning with the Canucks.

Cliques forming in the dressing room. Perhaps a product of family men versus the young and the restless? Feeling that some younger players have not had to earn a job while vets who have given their all have been scapegoated for the results.

As Doc says maybe just impatience. Maybe sour grapes from players who couldn't get the job done.

I was told ownership keeps changing the goal posts. Say they are fine transitioning but refuse a rebuild. Refused the Luongo trade initially. Refused the Kesler deal, initially. Refused a deal for Edler, Burrows and Higgins 2 summers ago. Got into a pissing contest with MG over a rebuild. Seems Torts and MG were actually on the same page.

Hired Linden with full autonomy but that was short lived. Hearing Linden has to keep putting out internal fires.

Ownership has mandated spending to the cap and being active in FA. Wanted to offer the moon for Lucic.

Anyway, I was painted a picture of a team in disarray with no one sure who is in charge. Ownership described as business men with no clue how to run a sports franchise. Wanting to keep up with the Jones but no clue how to do that. Even to the point of interfering, from time to time, with line up decisions, or at least trying to. This is where Linden putting out fires comes in.

I dunno. Maybe just fan frustration boiling over still. But players talk. Agents talk. Owners talk. As Doc says, maybe the nature of a painful rebuild and in that sense it's all normal.

Re: Canucks 2016 Post Season Discussion
Postby Hockey Widow » Mon Jun 27, 2016 12:43 pm

Got a little update on the Gudbranson deal.

The Canucks had been searching hard, for 2-3 weeks, to try to land a top four RHS Dman. We know the price was high including for FA. Benning wanted to stay away from some of the FA because he could not get permission to speak to their agents.

After many discussions, Benning had a deal worked out for Dan Girardi. Don't know the details. The Canucks were in a holding pattern, contemplating the move, when they got a call from Florida. They had previously inquired about Gudbranson and where told he was not available.

Florida told Benning what their asking price was, their 2nd and one of three players, McCann, Virtanen or Boeser. Benning was told that Edmonton had offered up their 2nd and Yakupov but Florida wanted a young player on an ELC that could be waived and that Florida would go back to Edmonton. Also told Leafs refused to offer up their own second but did offer up a younger player. Don't know who.

Florida had not at this point shopped Gudbranson as they targeted what they wanted and wanted a quick, quiet deal.

There was a clock on the deal. Florida made it clear there was little if any negotiation room. Their needs were simple. A high 2nd and a young top six who could be waived for 1-2 more years, if need be. The risk Benning took in not acting was that Florida would then shop Gradbruson and knowing the market and knowing the teams in need, Benning pulled the trigger. Boeser was off the table as he is pretty untouchable right now so it came down to McCann or Virtanen. The analytics guys really wanted McCann, the hockey's guys wanted to keep Virtanen.

Florida and Vancouver had completely different assessments of the upside for McCann vs Virtanen. In the end both teams got what they wanted with very little negotiation.

Edmonton really wanted Gudbranson but perhaps all their high first round picks came back to haunt them. They wouldn't or couldn't part with any of the young players Florida wanted in exchange.

The deal was sudden in that Florida jumped in before Vancouver could pull the trigger on Girardi. I have to think they would have gotten more had they opened this up or waited until the draft. But they knew Vancouver was desperate and they targeted who they wanted and got their price.

Just think, we could have had Girardi and still kept McCann.

Yes. Girardi has fallen off a cliff. Further than Bieksa.
