The Leafs fan at my work (who I'm beginning to envy a heck of a lot) that I talk to basically said he figures that Florida probably just told Benning it was a take it or leave it offer and if he didn't accept they would make a deal with someone else.

They probably just asked for the 2nd rounder just for fun.

Yep, I remember.

As I recall, you saw Benning as a Boston double-agent.

Good call, good call.

I didn't see him as a Boston double-agent, I just thought it was stupid to try and become Boston because they beat us in the finals.

especially stupid considering gillis built the better team. we were in first place, about to cross the finish line, only to be hit by a series of red shells (injuries, collusion, arbitrary refereeing), allowing big dumb bowser to cross ahead of us. and now were forced to hear the merits of picking bowser over toad

It's ridiculous also how closely we are following the Canucks of the late 90's, who thought they needed to emulate the team that beat them in '94 by adding Mike Keenan and Mark Messier. Also like this team, the 98 Canucks were young, big, and super mean and scary and stuff, with Brashear leading the league in PIM's and all kinds of other scary goons.

Oh, and also they sucked donkey balls.

Hopefully it means that Benning, like Quinn in 97, will be canned in November.

One person on HF caught my little Easter Egg in the final panel, but not one person has commented on the fact that Benning is reading this comic. Is it not clear enough?

At first I thought it was Gillis reading BOE for some reason.

Benning makes more sense from a continuity stand point.

There's a guy on boreds offering allegedly insider info via PM (and it sounds pretty credible/intuitive, to be honest), who says they definitely aren't trading the 5th, for what it's worth.

Here are the two PMs -- he says he works for the organization, and it's based on office chatter. So not 100% reliable if true (because things change, obviously), but not pulled out of thin air:

If it's to be believed, I'm pleased that Linden doesn't like Lucic. And I think it'd be ridiculous to consider McCann a poor influence and not Lucic, but Benning and Weisbrod aren't the brightest bunch.

Weisbrod went to Harvard, man! (Presumably on a sports scholarship). I read his Wikipedia page -- he's an incredible specimen! He's never been wrong about anything!*

Thanks! I'm taking a bit of a calculated risk here... I've also thrown in a lot of book references that might be partially lost on show-watchers, but I figure people will get the gist of it. Until the final panel, it's more a style parody than anything.

I don't watch the show nor read the books but I do follow along and think I'm decently well versed in the lore. Calling them the "Others" is a nice touch. Would have rather seen Don Maclean's stupid fucking handicapped head instead of Kypreos but then the joke does not work.

The guy who sang American Pie, or the basketball player? :donger:

Also, it was way too hard to fit a 'T' and 'H' into the stupid '70s Oilers' logo.

30 thoughts
4. Early prediction: Toronto takes Auston Matthews. Patrik Laine to Winnipeg. Columbus selects Jesse Puljujarvi. Edmonton goes for Matthew Tkachuk. Pierre-Luc Dubois heads for Vancouver.

6. Some rumblings the Canucks prefer Logan Brown. At this time of year, I refer to the Isiah Thomas rule. As a young reporter, he said to me, “Around the draft, everyone lies.”

There is a connection, however, that would provide Vancouver good intel on Brown. Logan’s father, Jeff, coached the USHL Indiana Ice when director of amateur scouting Judd Brackett was the Ice’s head scout two years ago.

7. A GM on the Vancouver Canucks: “One of the free-agent wingers is going there. Just have to figure out which one.”

Word out of the combine was Boston and Loui Eriksson would take a final run at a deal.

Jim Benning wrote:“We want to be prepared for any scenario that could come up at the draft. But depending on who’s there when we pick, we know we’re getting a good player. We’re not looking to move the pick, but I wouldn’t be doing my job if teams call and make offers for the pick and we didn’t consider the offers.

“We’re doing our due diligence. If we can move down and get a top-six player and a second-round pick, we have to keep our options open. I’m not saying we’re going to do anything, but we need to be prepared for any situation that may come up. But at the end of the day, if we go in and pick at No. 5, I’m real confident that we’re getting a piece that will help us win and be part of our future for a long time.”

This is a guy from the same management team that traded Tyler Seguin for being too much of a party guy.

The other part of the management team behind that is in Edmonton.

The buy-out window opens today. Jared Cowen is the only player on waivers for the purpose is being bought out.

The fact that Burrows and Higgins aren't on waivers means one of:

a) They aren't going to be bought out
b) The Canucks haven't decided if they will be bought out
c) The Canucks didn't realized the buy-out window opened today and Burrows and/ or Higgins will be waived tomorrow

I hope it's a) (at least for Burrows) but the smart money is on c).

The Hurricanes acquired Teravainen for only a 2nd and 3rd by taking Bickell back as a cap dump.

The deadline deal to send Hamhuis to the Blackhawks fell apart because it was, "too complex" for Benning to understand.

The Blackhawks’ package was more complex. It involved unwanted contracts like Bryan Bickell and Chris Higgins. Remember when Toronto and Vancouver tried to make a Roberto Luongo trade tight to the end? It didn’t work because things were too complex. Same here. Chicago wanted Hamhuis, too.

When asked about moving up, Benning says he made calls but right now is content with #5. Doesn't sound like its a possibility. #Canucks

Dan Murphy ‏@sportsnetmurph 2h2 hours ago
Now if someone blew #canucks doors off with offer for #5 pick, I guess anything could happen but Benning excited for player at that spot.

Dan Murphy ‏@sportsnetmurph 2h2 hours ago
Teams are calling #Canucks about #5 pick but Benning not looking to trade down.

Dan Murphy ‏@sportsnetmurph 2h2 hours ago
Quick chat with Benning: no decision on potential buyouts yet. Free agency could play a role in what #Canucks do with Burrows.

The Vancouver Canucks signed forward Sven Baertschi to a two-year contract on Thursday.
According to TSN Hockey Reporter Farhan Lalji, the deal is worth a total of $3.7 million with an average annual value of $1.85 million.

The Canucks YouTube channel has been putting out player profile videos for the upcoming draft.

IMO there's a pretty good chance the videos are being rolled out in order of the Canucks draft ranking. The list is close to the CSS NA skater ranking, but not exactly the same.

The list isn't complete, but is does have Dubois ahead of Tkachuk and both of them ahead of any defencemen.

Benning is surprised that, after trading away all of the Canucks picks and prospects of value, no one wants to give him anything for the Canucks remaining junk.

“A month ago, it seemed there were defencemen out there in the marketplace,” Benning said. “But when I was talking to teams, it seemed we didn’t have the assets to get their good, young, high-end guys. It was like I was showing up to a gunfight with a slingshot, and other teams had machine guns.

Benning in a NHL GM. Why does nobody seem to care that he publicly and repeatedly admits that he doesn't understand players value? Isn't his job to understand the NHL market?
