Watch Jake Skille and James Sheppard "beat out" actual good players with upside like Brendan Gaunce. We'll hear "leadership", "veteran presence", "can't have too man kids", "3 zone game", "we see Gaunce as a winger", "better to have him play meaningful minutes than sit on the bench", and so forth. Expect Subban to be sent down in the first wave and then traded for a no-upside waiver eligible prospect after he kneels during the American national anthem.

The line-Up I'd like to see:

Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson
Baertschi - Horvat - Hansen
Dorsett - Sutter - Etem
Zalewski - Gaunce - Burrows
Granlund

Edler - Tanev
Hutton - Gudbranson
Tryamkin - Biega
Larsen
Sbisa

Markstrom
Miller

The line-up we'll get:

Sedin-Sedin-Eriksson
Baertschi - Sutter - Hansen
Dorsett - Horvat - Burrows
Skille - Granlund - Etem
Virtanen

Edler - Tanev
Hutton - Gudbranson
Sbisa - Biega
Larsen
Tryamkin

Miller
Markstrom

I think Rodin makes the team, at least to start. I can't see him being waived before playing one NHL game.

The last forward spot would then be down to Virtanen, Gaunce, Zalewski, Grenier, and the PTOs. Virtanen would be the favourite, but I'd like to see Zalewski make it.

That's true, I forgot about Rodin. He wasn't on the website's camp list. I could see them waiving him if it meant he still hasn't recovered from injury. I think it's very possible he might need a bit of time in the minors before being called up.

If he is on the team I imagine he'll take Etem's spot.

I really hope Virtanen is sent to the AHL. He really needs some seasoning. The has spent huge parts of the last two seasons injured or playing through injuries. There are enough other veterans and young forwards.

Rödin is very intriguing, but he's going to be in tough because of the injury situation combined with NHL adjustment. I think it would be an awesome story if he were to succeed, but I'm not convinced he finishes the season before going back. Hope I'm wrong.

He also makes an appearance in tomorrow's Benning on Empty, for the record.

I don't really find Rodin all that interesting. I doubt he and Larsen make it to the end of the season.

Apparently Miller has already been declared the undisputed #1 starter of the world, which is idiotic and insane. I wonder if he'll get a contract extension too.

What a junk team.

Provided he heals well, Rodin is a wonderful skater and will probably be one of the fastest players in the NHL. So it's somewhat exciting, at least, but probably won't be because we'll still have to see Derek Dorsett skate like a chicken with its head cut off for 15 minutes a night.

Interesting that Alexis D'Aoust made it through this round of cuts.

He's an undrafted '96 born forward who had 98 points in 68 games last season in the Q.

The only other tryout players remaining are Skille, Sheppard, and Ruutu.

I'm frankly surprised he survived Benning's first season let alone his second.

What'll the return be? 6th rounder? Too optimistic?

There's no defending the Forsling trade. Even if Clendening panned out, he was a guy on his way out in Chicago after not making the team for 3 or so years and getting passed over by others on the depth chart. Guys like that are worth a mid round pick at best, not a prospect who at the time was logging huge minutes for an SHL team.

anyway after a bunch of preseason games i've barely watched

sedin sedin eriksson
baertschi horvat rodin
granlund sutter hansen
burrows gaunce skille
dorsett, ruutu

edler tanev
hutton gudbranson
tryamkin stecher
sbisa

i'd deep six dorsett if possible because he's been worse than etem (who looks like a totally different player than last year) and put zalewski in his place, buuuuuut that will never happen

I'm disappointed Etem has been a bag of shit. I liked the idea of a Etem-Sutter-Dorsett line. Just let them skate around really fast and throw pucks at the net.

I really want Zalewski to make the team. Biega should be there even if he's an 8th man. Rather have more defenceman than forwards.

i'd have biega on the team too, but you can't drop tryamkin or sbisa

mark barberio is on waivers and would be an excellent pick up, but slim dim jim made no room for any sort of move like that

Tryamkin has been kind of bad but the Russian factor forces their hand a bit

Zalewski should be on the team over, well, pretty much any of the 4th line options outside of Gaunce.

I was just reminded we have Dorsett for another three years. How do you give a 4th liner money AND term?

Etem better not be on the team. Ruutu, Skille, and Zalewski have all been better than him.

Granlund trade continues to make no sense. Now he's being tried on the wing, since there's no room at center for him. Just like when the trade happened.

There was room for him at centre last year because the centre depth was one of the worst going into the season, but he didn't really do anything there. Low event player.

Benning on Empty #31 is a third 'Very Special Episode', called "The 'Mementous' Occasion". If you don't know how this works, there's a bit of help at the bottom.

Baertschi-Horvat-Hansen
Dorsett-Sutter-Virtanen
Burrows-Gaunce-Skille

Nilsson is a minor league defencemen they signed out of Sweden.

He's injured, so the Canucks aren't allowed to send him to the AHL yet. He'll be demoted once he's healthy.

If Tryamkin plays like he did in the pre-season, that pairing with Sbisa is going to be one of the worst in the league.

Gaunce, Hutton, Hansen, and Baertschi are where they should be. Hansen filled in excellently as a first line forward last season and is a very good defensive player. Perfect for second line duty with two young guys. Hutton was a top-4 defenceman last season. Gaunce could probably handle 3rd line center duty this season. I didn't list Skille but he's been a quality 4th liner for a while now.

Hansen, while I love the guy, is not a top six forward on a good team. Neither is Baertschi or Horvat. Hutton is not a good top four defenseman on a good team and none of them is a star.

I disagree about Hansen and Hutton. Hansen is essentially Chris Higgins, two way player focused on defense with just enough offensive skill to compliment better players. Would be the 6 in the top-6.

A good team wouldn't have Hansen, Horvat, and Baertschi in their top-6. A contender could easily have any one of them (assuming Baertschi and Horvat's second halves were the norms and not blips).

Our top line was just fine last season with Hansen on it. I see no reason to break that up. If we kept him there and put Eriksson with Baertschi and Horvat we would have 2 good - not great - scoring lines. By putting Eriksson with the Sedins and putting Hansen back into a bottom six role we are a one line team again.

Sutter is almost literally painful to watch in the offensive zone. Just dumb as a rock but that was a hell of a shot so if he just does that like 20 times it's alright I guess.
