Amid what is starting to sound like freaking certainty that Benning flips Ben Hutton for Kane and some of the dumbest interview answers imaginable, I present to you Benning on Empty no. 36: "The Due Diligence":

I only turned the game on because it was 3 - 0 and I wanted to watch the Canucks beat the Blackhawks.

Amazing that like the first game this season we have a lead going into the third and then in the 3rd Chicago is like oh yeah we have a game tonight and out-shoot us 17-3 and win it.

At least we got a point.

The good news is that, reasonably or not, a lot of people look at the coach when that happens, so maybe this process can get under way. Who knows how much rope "We beat the Blackhawks!" would have given everyone.

11. Here’s what it sounds like happened with Vancouver, Buffalo and Evander Kane: There were a lot of assumptions the price would be low, that the Sabres would be so desperate to do this that the Canucks would get a steal.

Sabres GM Tim Murray made it clear that would not be the case. (Neither team would comment.)

If you look at the blockbuster with Winnipeg, the Sabres were willing to grow the deal to increase the return, and I would assume that happened here, too. One of the things I’ve heard Buffalo is looking for is speed, both up front and on the blue line. There are not a ton of logical fits. As mentioned last week, Vancouver is not giving up either Brock Boeser or Olli Juolevi unless the return is massive. And I don’t think Buffalo was too interested in anyone off the main Vancouver roster other than maybe Chris Tanev. In the end, the Canucks weren’t willing to do it.

That's ironic.

I'll definitely be going to whatever games I can get tickets for at a reasonable price. Hopefully our new GM starts stockpiling picks, so we can have a few of our prospects there.

It'll be hard for the new GM to stockpile picks when the old GM has traded them away to make a playoff run :punchballs:

This is a team that's going to have stretches of good and luck driven play sandwiched in-between horrendous play. It's what happens when you have a hard working team that's playing alright defensively but few real offensive players. When luck goes their way and they have energy they'll be able to scrap out a streak of wins. When they tire, like earlier in the season, and teams take them seriously they'll fall back to earth. Then the earth's molten core. Don't think this is the worst team in the league but think they are bottom 5. Loser points might be the only thing that prevents this.

Quick summary if you haven't yet listened: the Canucks had hired Chayka's former stats agency, with which his sister Meghan is still affiliated, and the What-Benning-Says-Goes culture is so ingrained in the organization that, rather than asking for data as a means to make a decision, they were instead asked to come up with stats in order to justify the Prust and Granlund acquisitions. So basically the stats are being used for propaganda rather than decision-making. Apparently the work that the company (Stathletes, Inc.) has done for the Canucks has harmed their credibility somewhat, and the Flyers in particular stopped using them.

The RGS guys were offered this info unsolicited by someone within the organization, but apparently Chayka's sister also favorited the tweet (!) offering it. Although she may have undone it now, because I don't see it among her likes.

I'm going to try and watch tonight's game (Panthers). 3 minutes in and Sbisa single handed causes a goal against. Just hideously bad hockey by him.

Sbisa with another terrible play leading to a 2 on 1 against. Stecher blocks a Jagr pass with a great slide and saves a scoring chance.

I like Tryamkin. Seems to have a solid feel for the game but I doubt he'll be anything beyond a 10 point defensive giant. That basically makes him better than Sbisa and Gudbranson at this stage.

First period over. Boring as hell with an offense that seems to only get going on fast breaks and is easily neutralized in o-zone.

That was a more entertaining period by virtue of having three power plays to force this team into the offensive zone. On a related note, Willie and staff deserve to be fired just for the PP choices.

Remember when Canucks fans were passionate enough to boo Lou and chant Fire Gillis? That can't even happen anymore because this sad excuse of a management group eroded an extremely fickle fan base faster than should have been possible.

If Desjardins doesn't get fired tomorrow then this management is, amazingly, even dumber than we thought. The way he handled Carolina storming back was putrid. Didn't call a timeout. Didn't change goalies. Didn't do anything to even attempt to shift momentum. Just had a dumbfounded look on his face.

It's possible ownership won't let him, keep in mind. There's already speculation (and it's only that, to be clear) that the limits on trading that Benning has forecast to the whole league, and the absence of waiver claims, may be being dictated from above for financial reasons.

Bad ownership on a budget. Incompetent management. Terrible coaching. High payroll that produces nothing. It's like we're "watching" the late 90s Canucks all over again.

Quick is out until March and Peter Budaj is terrible. If Benning were not a moron he'd probably be able to get anything of value for Miller by sending him there.
