This season has definitely been the least Canuck hockey I've watched since I lived in Europe. And before then you probably have to go back to when none of the games were on TV and streaming wasn't a thing.

I've watched less games this year than either year I lived in Japan.

Terrific return for Burrows if that's the whole trade.

Dahlen was just drafted 42nd overall last year. Nearly a PPG player in the Allsvenkan this season and he had a good WJC. And yes, he's Ulf Dahlen's son.

This was literally all I cared about.

That is a pretty great return. Super conflicted about Burrows being traded but getting a 19 yo who's ripping up the Swedish League and is slotted to be on the team next year is fantastic.

Keep in mind it's not the SHL, it's one tier down, but it's still a men's league.

Well that all depends... if it ends up keeping Benning around another year, then not really...

That said, if Aquillini keeps Benning around because he made one good deal out of however many, it's still idiocy. (I also am pretty sure Benning was staying regardless, for reasons I can't comprehend. I'm not even sure Willie gets the heave-ho).

Hansen to the Sharks for Goldobin (?) and a conditional 4th. The condition is that if the Sharks win the Cup it becomes a 1st. Guess I'm cheering for the Sharks to win the Cup.

All I know about Goldobin is that he has 41 points in 45 AHL games.

Decent return, but Hansen is a very good player under contract. Goldobin has nice stats since being drafted, but still hasn't been able to make an impact in the NHL and he has fallen down the Sharks depth chart this season with Meier, Labanc, and O'Regan having strong seasons. Next season is Goldobin's last year of waiver exemption, so he'll need to make an impact soon.

He's a similar level prospect as Shinkaruk last year imo. Closer to a 2nd in value than a 1st. Again, not a bad deal, but I would have preferred picks over Goldobin. Go Sharks.

Oh, it just came out that the Canucks are retaining 20% of Hansen's salary. So they can only retain one more contract next season.

How the fuck do you justify retaining 20% of a 2.5m salary when only acquiring a mid-tier prospect and a late pick?

Way to kill my enthusiasm.

Canucks claimed Cramarossa. This is actually a very good claim. Dude's been great as a 4th liner for Anaheim.

Who is this GM and what has he done with our moron?

Cramarossa is a good move just to get a capable body in the NHL with Burrows and Hansen gone. Let's the Canucks send a prospect back to Utica instead of having them sit in the press box.

Heh, I guess I mean Goldobin if he isn't ready. I don't really care if LaBate, Grenier, Zalewski, or Rendulic are in the press box.

Pretty sure Goldobin is going to finish the season with the team. With Baertschi out, there's a very clear path for him. I'd like to see Gaunce play with Cramarossa. That's a good forechecking tandem.

An Irish hurler spent a week with the Canucks and wrote about. The part about "change ups" in particular is terrific.

“And they have this thing called a ‘change up’, when a player is not on form, not scoring. The manager will call a ‘change up’, and basically that player has to go out and ruin himself for the night, then come back the next day, with the attitude of you just don’t care.

“So they send him out, drink 20 pints, go off with a couple of women, whatever he wants. And come back the next day. That’s the way they live. It’s the culture, what they believe in, letting off steam like that. I don’t know if they look at the science behind it.”

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-story-behind-flames-turnaround/

9. Pittsburgh took a long look at Jannik Hansen before he was traded to San Jose. That’s the second straight season the Penguins took a run at a Vancouver player, only to have it fall through. (Last year, it was Dan Hamhuis.) Los Angeles pursued Hansen as well, but it sounds like the Kings needed Vancouver to retain a little more salary and weren’t as willing to upgrade the draft pick conditions. If the Sharks win the Stanley Cup, the fourth-rounder for Hansen becomes a first.

10. There were eight or nine legit offers for Burrows. Ottawa was the only one willing to step up with an extension, so the Senators got their man.

11. Henrik Sedin briefly discussed the meeting with Jim Benning and Trevor Linden prior to Vancouver’s trades of Burrows and Hansen. He confirmed his and Daniel’s future was not a topic. “We have not talked about beyond next season at all. If they want to talk to us about it this summer — or whenever they want to discuss it — we will be ready. But we haven’t talked about it yet.” The twins have one more year on their contracts.

12. Patrick Sharp may not be the only NHLer who gets shut down once his team is officially eliminated from the playoffs. Vancouver may have a couple of candidates, including Chris Tanev, who is playing through multiple injuries.

Good thing they'll get Tanev more injured by giving him big minutes in their critical efforts to reach 10th place. I'm sure physical condition doesn't matter long-term for pro sports anyway.

They signed Jalen Chatfield to a 3 year ELC. I have no idea who he is or what his game is (supposed 2-way defenceman) but regressed points-wise from last season and neither number is very impressive (15-16 37 pts 16-17 28 pts).

He hasn't been much of a chance. Our coach prefers no skill grinders Cramarossa, Drew Shore, and Megna who he sees as being better for the trap.

He looked good against the Islanders. He was able to get his shot off really quick and with power. Saturday against Pittsburgh he was pretty poor though. Just disinterested in his own zone and unable to generate any offense by himself.

You've nailed him perfectly. On the Devils he barely shot when he had chances to which is stupid because he has a great one. His big downfall is simply being unable to generate his own chances. He'll be an elite AHLer at this rate.

He did have 5 shots against Pittsburgh and has been pretty good at shooting. Offensive game seems decent and has even been able to do some stuff on his own but boy is he bad defensively.

Some nice food for thought
Stock rising: The Vancouver Canucks coaching staff...

...from 2013–14. Sorry, Willie Desjardins.

While this year's Canucks have overachieved against pre-season predictions that they'd finish dead last, we're not buying much stock in Desjardins and his staff at the moment. But if you happen to have a time machine that can take you back to the 2013 off-season, you could get a good deal on some coaching futures.

That was the summer that the Canucks fired Alain Vigneault after seven years (and two Presidents' Trophies). After days of speculation, the team hired John Tortorella. And about a month later, Tortorella filled out his staff with a pair of assistants: Mike Sullivan and Glen Gulutzan.

It didn't go so well. The Canucks didn't make the playoffs and Tortorella and Sullivan were fired after just one season. (Gulutzan stuck around until last year.)

But while the trio didn't guide the Canucks to many wins, they must have learned a thing or two in the process, because they've had plenty of success ever since. Tortorella remains the front-runner for the Jack Adams in his first full season in Columbus. Gulutzan might give him some competition thanks to a late-season win streak that has his Flames soaring up the standings. And Sullivan already has a Stanley Cup to his name with last year's Penguins, and just might get another this year.

Meanwhile, Vigneault moved on to the Rangers, where he's on track for his fourth straight season of 95+ points. And one of his assistants in Vancouver, Rick Bowness, just broke Scotty Bowman's record for games coached.

So chin up, Willie Desjardins and the rest of the Canucks bench staff. There may be brighter days ahead. Just, uh, probably not in Vancouver.

Mid-20s AHLer we signed out of Europe to be a warm body since our drafting, developing, and scouting is so terrible they could identify even quality AHLers before the season started.

They burn a year off his ELC by playing him this season, right? Just want to make sure.

Yup. Since he is 20 the 9 game slide rule doesn't apply.

Also he is stuck in the NHL for the remainder of the season.

I bet college kids are scaring GM's a bit after Vesey and probably Kerfoot going to bounce on the Devils (not that he's a big prospect).

Boeser scores in his 1st NHL game. Instant chemistry with Horvat-Baertschi and looks like the best RW on the team already.

Minnesota is playing like hot garbage. What a sad franchise, their games are almost always boring as shit and they have zero chance at a cup with that mediocre roster.

In theory this might not be a completely negative thing right? Wouldn't his second contract likely end up being lower having essentially only 2 seasons in the NHL and not 3?

Yeah, I don't think the contract thing is a particularly big deal, it's more whether he'd have been better served by playing playoff-intensity games at the AHL level, and whether his wrist is in such a condition that he should be playing at all rather than resting/rehabbing. Especially if he plays again today in Winnipeg, that is a lot of hockey within three days for a recent amateur.

No big prospect has ever gone this route so I do not think it is a legitimate concern.

This is basically a PR stunt by the Canucks but whatever; we need something to get excited about so it is not a big deal.

In number 52, I got to violate slightly less copyright by using some of my own Utica photos:
