RCH up 10% today on good news/earnings. It's been a dog for months so nice to see the change.

I knew something was up because over the last 10 days there were some giant buys. Lots of big volume. The stock world is so crooked, as I'm sure the news was out beforehand. It would be nice to sneak into those lists of guys who get the news before the news.

The inherent value of their capital assets, like, for example, their stake in the 407 highway, is more than than the overall valuation right now.

So in essence, the market is giving the company, the engineering, the entire business, a negative value. Less than liquidation value.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Still not buying though...

Seems to be trading at a P/B of .85. I guess investors consider CDPQ would ward off any foreign takeovers and the restructuring needed to return to profitability to be a long and arduous road. Company could become a bit of a “walking zombie”, neither dying nor recovering strength, for a long while if takeovers are taken off the table. Book value could be eroded or realization be too far off to allogn IRR with risk profile. Also, don’t know how “representative” their book value accounting is. This is mostly a services company with most of its value tied up on intangibles, human ressources and ability to deliver on contracts. That could all erode with time.

Still, at this price, seems like a ok long term “risky” shot. And, hey, maybe a takeover goes through sooner than expected.

:dunno:

Most of its value "was" book value.

- SNC's stake in the 407 is about 3 billion dollars.
- They also acquired, in the last 4 years, 2 massive engineering firms, in 2015, Kentz, for 2 billion and in late 2017,
- Atkins, for 3.2 billion.

That's 8.2 billion, of which 3b is a capital asset and 5.2b is recently evaluated after a transaction.

Even assuming the other 35,000 employees (i.e., the non Kentz, non Atkins employees), projects, revenues etc. are worth zero.. (which is entirely possible)..

current valuation is.. low..

Still. Risky.

You have to remove debt and other liabilities. Their price to earnings ratio seems to be around .85 with a market cap just under 3B (so some 3.5B book value).

Separate classes of shares post-IPO? Also don’t like the intermediated partnership structure. Wouldn’t want management fees or carried interest siphoned off. This looks like a pre-IPO structure. Could be fine -economics in the partnership could fully flow up and the separate class of commons could just be to preserve different cost basis, but it’s weird and raises some flags that management could be siphoning off economics below the top holco.

This link doesn’t go into much detail (I’m not reading the registration statements for you idiots), but the separate class of commons are to allow management to keep control through multi-voting shares. Also seems to be a myriad of pre-IPO related party transactions. Also, management will get distributions from the partnership, while other investors go through the top holdco.

This is such bad governance and misalignment of interests. Hope this flops bad.

I sold shopify today at $525. Bought about 75% of my portfolio worth of it june 24th for $384. It's been on an insane run in just a couple months and I just had to protect gains as that plan has worked for the last few years. Always hard to sell but I have fresh memory scars of holding on too long and washing all gains.

Honestly not sure where it goes from here. The fake citron report guy really knocked it around in the past with his short seller report. Something could happen again. Who knows. Its overvalued but it will be a $1000 share price in the near future. Will it be 6 months or 4 years, I dont know.

The worry when you're on the outside is something huge happens when I'm on the sidelines. I still wonder if Amazon would take a run at buying them. Not sure if it makes sense to them or not but shopify has proven to be running a smooth company.

I think a pullback is coming. I'll have a hard time not buying if it pulls back to the 50 day moving average which is way down at $436 amazingly. That's the run that it's been on.

RCH.TO With what looks to be the old tightening of the bollinger bands.

http://schrts.co/cYjbmczp

6 month chart is a bit clearer.

http://schrts.co/ZWynzkvR

So we have:
- tight bands
- some side to side movement that has sat and calmed since Aug 1st.
- 50 day moving average on an uptrend
- 50 day is above the 200 dma

Those things are all good. Coming off a good surprise earnings and some analysts upping their targets to $28 and I THINK it should go "up" here. Of course, just talking out loud here.

What I really like is the low low volume of the last 6 days. When that happens and the price stays the same it usually means that most people are not in a need to sell, the sellers are gone.

It SHOULD ride up the top bollinger on a bit of a run here, but hey I'm no pro. What we certainly have is a ton of resistance and support at $26. Click the year and a half chart that's the first link and you'll see how many times it's sat in around the $26 mark. $26 will be a tough ceiling to bump through, so strap on your Jofa helmet and hold on.

Big drop from Shopify. It's almost at the 50 day moving average. Certainly a good area to pick some up if you're comfortable holding long. Of course, I want to get greedy and buy lower. It could bounce up from the 50 in the next day or two, or it could break the 50 and sink further. I just don't know.

Another drop today and I'm a sucker for a deal and bought in. I would have liked to have seen it close above $446 as that's been a big number in the past of support. I bought at $454 and it closed at $442. We'll see. Could free fall a bit more as this is the first time it's closed below the 50DMA since the first week of Jan. Either a discount sale price to buy, or she'll fall lower and I'll look like a sucker.

SHOP released news last night after the close that the they spent a half billion on acquiring a robotics warehouse company in the quest to battle Amazon. My gut says stay away from Amazon or you may get hurt, but hey I'm just watching this happen. I thought maybe the market would hate the deal so I held off buying this morning and things weren't as bad as I thought. Pulled the trigger before lunch.

So here I am, back in. The way I see it is... I spent exactly the amount of money that I sold last month in Shopify shares and bought 18 more today than I owned last month. It'll either be a good buy or a too early of a buy that I have to wait a while to get back into the green. I should really wait to post this until after it's done something that makes me look smart. This one could backfire, but I've said over the last few months that anything at the 50 day, I'll buy. Don't feel as confident now that I have the shares. Gah..
