He has plenty of evidence to support that lying through his teeth about easily verifiable facts will work out for him. His whole presidency is a testament to that and his popularity is on the upswing.

Re: Murrica: fuck yeah
You’d think the luck would run out at some point.
You think that more than a handful of diehards will believe that the POTUS and a Republican controlled congress does not have control over this? That’s impossible. Maybe the sales pitch is ultimately « migrants are dangerous, we’re justified in doing this », but you know, you’d hope that using kids as pawns in this manner and with those justifications will just backfire. Kinda dwindling down to the last shreds of decency of the electorate here.

Everyone knows a military organization in space should be modeled after the navy, not the air force. That's like sci-fi 101.

But anyways, I am sure the space fleet will wag the dog and draw media attention away from the child internment camps.

1) I wouldn't be shocked to see the upswing come to an abrupt halt over the next couple weeks following the media attention to the immigration crisis they've created.
2) The narrative about his rising popularity is a bit overheated: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/ho ... -by-state/
Basically, he's got a pretty hard polling floor in the high 30s, and he stumbles around a few points above there depending on how batshit he gets. When unpopular crap happens (hysterical toddlers on the front page, for example) he drops down to his floor. When he does semi normal shit and/or avoids major controversy, some GOP voters come home and forgive the bad shit.
The fundamental question is going to be whether when push comes to shove with the ~10% he will need to be competitive on election day (both 2018 and 2020) will hold their nose again. I have my doubts about that, simply because the (misguided) belief that Trump was more moderate than his campaign persona has proven to be BS.

Joaquin Castro just posted to Twitter that he saw an 8 month old that had been interned for a month. I'm staring at my 17 month old right now, and it is just horrifying to contemplate.
The campaign ads on this issue are going to be vicious and devastating ... likely why they have been so restrictive on pictures.

1) I hope so, but I legitimately think that ~40% of the voting public in the US right now is either not bothered by it, actively approves of it, is indifferent to it or actually believes it's the Dems fault somehow. There's lots of evidence to support that.
2) That state by state thing is misleading, because it's comparing to election day. Approval ratings always fluctuate a lot right after elections. This is the only thing you really need, for broad strokes like we're talking about: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/tr ... id=rrpromo
Another way to interpret those numbers is when he started hitting the nationalist notes really hard his approval went up to the highest level it's been since March of last year, so playing to Nationalism by abusing foreigners just plays into that. He spent almost an entire year barely aspiring to hit 40% and normally around 37, but now he's consistently hitting 42 and still trending up.

Well, state by state matters a lot ... state electorates are going to have a massive say in what does and does not happen in the next 2 years. If, for example, the Dems manage to capture the Senate, then Trump likely will not get to appoint another justice.
As for the latter ... those are still not good numbers.

I don't know about dying, but it's a given some of these kids will never be reunited with their parents.

It doesn't take much in the way of lax childcare to turn into a real problem for an 8 month old kid. I get the impression this is not a quality daycare sort of situation they're in.

That would require drafting thousands of NASA personnel into the military.
What Trump is proposing (though he probably doesn't know it) is not building a Space Force from the ground up but taking the Air Force's already existing space-related units and spinning them off into their own separate military branch, like how the American Air Force was split from the Army in the 1940s.

I mean, the child separation policy is polling at 60% against ... and we have a POTUS that did not receive the majority of the vote, a House of Representatives that did not receive the majority of the vote, and the Senate (which is not designed to be representative). So, it's a bit more complicated than that. Due to a variety of factors, we are quite literally in a political moment where the minority rules.
Now, that being said ... a non-trivial portion of the country does approve of some/most of this stuff. But there are some mitigating factors--namely, the vast majority of them are very poorly informed on the subject matter.
