I suppose in a battle between Bannon/Breitbart vs Trump that the deplorables will stick with the visible dickhead up front which is Trump (?)

Because of Trump's legal threat, Henry Holt & Company have moved the release of Fire and Fury from Tuesday to tomorrow.

A NYTimes article I just read suggested Bannon will be the loser in a battle versus Trump. Trump is the main face / head for the deplorables and the Kochsuckers, Murdochs, Mercers etc, will all align with Trump (even if they disparage him in private). Reichbart News will probably fall in line too, eventually.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the median number of years that American workers have been working for their current employer is a little over four.

I say that to acknowledge how unusual it is that I have been working at National Public Radio for a little over 40 years — 41, to be precise.

For the past 30 years, I've been doing the same job: hosting All Things Considered. And doing it very happily.

No one is more surprised by my tenure than I am.

I came to NPR on what I thought was an unfortunate but necessary detour that — I hoped and figured — would last a couple of years.

I'm a native New Yorker and the New York FM radio station where I worked was sold in 1976 and — to put it mildly — I didn't figure in the new owner's plans.

Leaving New York felt like what I imagine it feels like when a player for the Yankees was sent down to play for the Toledo Mud Hens.

No matter, I figured, I would work my way back to civilization.

The fact that I am still here is a tribute to how colossally wrong I was about that.

At the NPR of the late 1970s, I found myself among a team of young, creative people, as uncynical a group of broadcasters I could have possibly imagined.

At a time when our audience research was, by today's standards, limited and primitive, we operated on what I still consider a healthy instinct. We put on a program that we, ourselves, would listen to.

We didn't imagine a great distinction between people like us, who reported the news, and people like you, who listened to it.

We weren't the only curious people in the country. There had to be millions more Americans out there who would welcome a smart, conversational program about politics, culture, science, the arts and just plain fun.

Despite some near-death experiences many years ago, NPR is still here, much bigger, much more listened-to, much more important than it was way back then.

But what remains the same is that authentic sense of purpose, still undimmed by cynicism or commercialism.

A very accomplished friend of mine used to speak of the last paragraph in a story, the windup, as the "and so."

And so, for the last time I'm signing off, proud of my association with this unique institution, mindful of things I might have done better, grateful for the company of thousands of gifted colleagues, and thankful to you, for being — as we used to say in those hackneyed but truthful fundraising messages — for being the public in public radio.

I'm Robert Siegel. And you're listening to All Things Considered from NPR News.

:bouillon: Stephen Miller Alert :bouillon:

Look for senior policy adviser Stephen Miller to make a rare appearance on Jake Tapper's Sunday CNN Show "State of the Union" tomorrow. Miller has for the longest time been described in the press as a Bannon ally, but that’s not quite true and I expect he will perform a public evisceration of Bannon for a gleeful audience of one.

a la Mooch's revival...

The White House has been encouraging its surrogates to go on TV and tear into Bannon; Trump has enjoyed the spectacle and the White House has kept close tabs on these performances. Hence the re-emergence of Anthony Scaramucci, who did a victory lap on TV this week ripping Bannon apart.

Bannon is a Clash of Civilizations fanatic. He literally thinks that the West is in a cold war with China, Islam, and maybe Latin America. He thinks he is going to be hero that will save America. He isn't going to let something petty like his pride take him out of the fight.

The West, specifically the US is shutting out people from the Middle East, primarily because of their belief in Islam. Many European countries refused to accept refugees from Syria specifically, but also in general.

There are increasing issues with the way China acts on human rights issues and with how they are supporting North Korea through the back door.

The US (not so much the rest of the rest of the West) has a number of issues with Venezuela (okay this category is a bit of a stretch).

I have no idea what clash of civilizations is about, but yeah, those are the new cold war. Or luke warm war or what have you.

It contains to some extent the hostility between countries (or in some cases people or groups of people). The relationship is characterized by threats and / or propaganda, and / or generally antagonism.

It's not the same as the cold war between the Americans and the Russians was, but still.

There's an old but influential (and controversial) essay by Samuel Huntington that's worth reading in this context.

i read that. it doesn't really talk about a "new cold war" so much as it talks about new global tensions coming from non-state agents in a post-cold war world.

my point was really just that the west have taken a "new cold war" stance with islam (warmer than cold), china (coldish), and latin america (cold in a selective manner) through their policies and actions. whether those tensions grow into full out conflict (as opposed to targeted conflict such as the battle against isis) or stay in the current state of threats / propaganda / general antagonism is debatable.

I think you need to re-read it. Huntington's primary thesis is that civilizations (explicitly religious/national/ethnic culture groups) would come to define geopolitics.

I think it's hard to make such a strong claim about the West. There are very clearly elements spouting a more ethnocentric protectionism within the West, but those views are far from being uncontested internally. The Trump admin has its own path, but a President Clinton or any other Dem (and most GOP) president would pursue a different agenda there.

The entry on the article (:)) wasn’t limited to non-state agents. It just kinda redefined conflicts in a post cold war world as between “civilizations” (ie. blocks of countries based on culture) rather than ideology (as was the case during the cold war).

I don’t know that I buy that it is primarily culture driven. Seems much more geo-political than cultural in most cases (such as China, which he claims to be the prime challenger). Growing towards a multipolar world after the end of the cold war.

There are a lot of reasons to question the thesis. That being said, part of the argument would be that culture informs geopolitics here. That is, China (and potentially Asia more generally) well push back against the West (which includes notions of political authority and structure, etc.).

It's a strong thesis, and controversial for good reason. It isn't stupid, though, and a lot of "important" people believe in it to one degree or another.

Arguing that the West is fundamentally at war with Islam is very difficult. For one thing, we (the West, particularly US) have forged alliances throughout the middle east and are really only at war with specific subsets of Islamic places. Even those enemies are very region-specific; in some places we hate AQ, but in others we leverage them against other people we like less. It seems a lot less like we're engaged in a war hot or cold with Islam, but rather we're the current preeminent world power so we're involved in all conflicts and Islam is a pretty conflicted place.

The other thing is Islam itself, insofar as you can address is as a monolith, is much more absorbed in internal conflicts than external. The Shia/Sunni and Saudi/Iranian conflicts are a lot more prominent for them than their beef with us. This is where guys like Bannon are fully off their rockers. Islam has no aims on subjugating the West in any meaningful way, they're too worried about their own conflicts to engage us like that.

Pedantically, there's no way this war is cold either. It went hot aaaaaaaages ago.

The concept of US being in a cold war with Latin America I think is so out there that I won't even bother to address it. Sketch immigration policies aren't enough to prove that claim, imo.

China is the closest you can get, but even then I really don't think there's anything like a cold war going on. Certainly there's some amount of animosity and competitiveness going on. China is clearly ascendant and are starting to challenge the norms of US dominated geopolitics. But they're not fundamentally opposed to the West in the way that the soviets were before them. China shows no signs of wanting to overthrow the West and subjugate them to their world order. They want a bigger say on the world stage, but they seem perfectly happy to join the existing international community. China today strikes me more like Japan and the Asian Tigers of the 20th century, they're just trying to leverage us, make a bunch of shit and get rich.

It's a strong thesis, and controversial for good reason. It isn't stupid, though, and a lot of "important" people believe in it to one degree or another.

I agree that culture and geopolitics will inform one another, at least to a certain extent. Was thinking of this as I made my post. It seems more ´obvious’ (not that it’s necessarily correct) to speak of a culture clash when refering to the Muslim world vs the West and I’m wondering to what extent that doesn’t taint the whole picture. Would we be talking about a ‘culture clash’ with China otherwise? Would we see it as Confusianism vs Western individualism/democracy or as simply geopolitical? Was Japan perceived as a culture clash when it took off economically in the post war decades? I think culture plays a part, but my sense is that it can also be overstated. There is alot of ‘intra-culture’ conflict and alot of ‘inter-culture’ conflict can also be explained otherwise. I’m not sold / am ambivalent on how useful a concept this is.

Huntington views Japan as a distinct culture, for what it's worth.

Tentacle porn is universal.

:crossarms:

Seriously, I had seen that. I just don’t know that ‘culture’ is descriptive of what is going on over and above other factors. Albeit, I’d think it’s certainly part of the story.

Jesus, thank god I didn't mention The Third Wave or The End of History.

Anyways, I think Trump's plan tonight is to distract his supporters from The Fire and the Fury by heroically standing up to black teenagers appealing for equal protection of law by storming out of a stadium:
