Monetary policy and internation monetary governance

Post #1 by AD » Thu Jan 22, 2015 2:34 pm

I'm looking for some views on this and to start up a discussion. (Malthus feel free to help us non-economists out).

What do you think of our current (mostly) floating international monetary regime? Is it sustainable?

I have trouble understanding any of the systems since the gold standard. But at least I can understand the concept of Bretton Woods. So do we need a new Bretton Woods? Which currency could countries peg to? Is there any one that could create a sustainable monetary market for the next 100 years? Would it even be possible in this multi-lateral landscape?

Is the IMF a shell at this point?

Is the World Bank essentially the financial branch of the US Army?

Are we destined to go back to a system based on bartering?

I don't know anything, but I don't think anything is better out there than a floating system that adjusts.

Is this going to be one of yer gold and guns rants?

We'll take a bit of time to go over the assigned material and reconvene here in 3 months?

Works for everybody?

You did ask for it.
Society is actually a bunch of flawed primates guided by selfishness, fear, and superstitious bullshit.

I think it's safe to say the answer is probably a resounding yes.

Just a hint, but one link at a time is more likely to seem fun and interesting, and less likely to seem like homework.

But that's just my take. Others may prefer to drink from the firehose.

Nah. I'm just easily intimidated by large amounts of reading.
