Even if its a small sliver of desert, let those who want Sharia to be ruled by Sharia. We can't force any type of governance on anyone and expect it to succeed. Or do we just ally with Russia and crush everyone who isn't Assad? Syria is a fucking mess. I also don't think having Kurds invade Sunni Muslim cities is a good idea as well. Another ISIS will pop up. Long term, what the hell are the options for Syria and Iraq?

Sorry for triple post but the support zones have barely changed in Iraq.

"The Iranians were making us pay a price. We need to make the Iranians pay a price in Syria. We need to make the Russians pay a price."

He went on to explain making them "pay the price" would mean killing Russians and Iranians, and said he wants to make Syrian president Bashar al-Assad uncomfortable.

"I want to go after those things that Assad sees as his personal power base. I want to scare Assad."

FRACTURED LANDS: HOW THE ARAB WORLD CAME APART

This is a story unlike any we have previously published. It is much longer than the typical New York Times Magazine feature story; in print, it occupies an entire issue. The product of some 18 months of reporting, it tells the story of the catastrophe that has fractured the Arab world since the invasion of Iraq 13 years ago, leading to the rise of ISIS and the global refugee crisis. The geography of this catastrophe is broad and its causes are many, but its consequences — war and uncertainty throughout the world — are familiar to us all. Scott Anderson’s story gives the reader a visceral sense of how it all unfolded, through the eyes of six characters in Egypt, Libya, Syria, Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan. Accompanying Anderson’s text are 10 portfolios by the photographer Paolo Pellegrin, drawn from his extensive travels across the region over the last 14 years, as well as a landmark virtual-reality experience that embeds the viewer with the Iraqi fighting forces during the battle to retake Falluja.

It is unprecedented for us to focus so much energy and attention on a single story, and to ask our readers to do the same. We would not do so were we not convinced that what follows is one of the most clear-eyed, powerful and human explanations of what has gone wrong in this region that you will ever read.

So, something big is happening: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Bahrain have cut off all ties with Qatar; Qatari citizens are ordered to leave those countries; Saudi Arabia has cut off all land, air, and sea connections with Qatar; and Qatar is no longer a member of the Saudi coalition fighting in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia says it is because of "dangers of terrorism and extremism", while Bahrain says it is because of “media incitement, support for armed terrorist activities and funding linked to Iranian groups to carry out sabotage and spreading chaos in Bahrain”. Other than that, there isn't any details yet.

But to turn on a fellow Sunni nation they way they did qatar musta fucked up biggg time. Surely they weren't working with Iran? But that's the only thing I can think of to piss off the rest like that

Qatar and some of its fellow Gulf Cooperation Council members are currently embroiled in a dispute over purported remarks by the Qatari emir in which he is alleged to have criticized their policies and called for better ties with arch-foe Iran.

Then something about Qatari soldiers being attacked by Yemen rebels on the Saudi side of the border

Yeah, it all the reasons the reported in the media just seem like flimsy pretext for some sort of regional power play by that 30-something Deputy Crown Prince who is now calling the shots in Saudi Arabia.

I wonder how much the Trump administration knew about all this and if they greenlight it ... and if so, if they knew were greenlighting it. Or if Trump made such a bad impression on his trip that the Saudis figure they can get away with anything now.

They turned heel on Qatar to get the Saudis the belt. Qatar has also been low-key kicking it with Iran and the crew thought he was getting soft.

Shockingly, Trump's tweets this morning did not de-escalate the crisis.

According to Al Jazeera, Saudi Arabia has given Qatar 24 hours to meet these ten demands:

1. Immediately break diplomatic relations with Iran.
2. Expel all Hamas members.
3. Freeze bank accounts of Hamas members and stop dealing with them.
4. Expel all Muslim Brotherhood members from Qatar.
5. Expel anti-GCC elements.
6. End support of 'terrorist organisations.'
7. Stop interfering in Egyptian affairs.
8. Cease broadcasting the Al Jazeera news channel.
9. Apologise to all Gulf governments for 'abuses' by Al Jazeera.
10. Qatar must pledge that will not carry out any actions that contradict the policies of the GCC and adhere to its charter.

I don't think any country has given a 10-point ultimatum since the Austro-Hungarians gave one to Serbia and even that one gave 48 hours to comply.

Suppress all publications which "incite hatred and contempt of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy" and are "directed against its territorial integrity".

Dissolve the Serbian nationalist organisation Narodna Odbrana ("The People's Defense") and all other such societies in Serbia.

Eliminate without delay from schoolbooks and public documents all "propaganda against Austria-Hungary".

Remove from the Serbian military and civil administration all officers and functionaries whose names the Austro-Hungarian Government will provide.

Accept in Serbia "representatives of the Austro-Hungarian Government" for the "suppression of subversive movements".

Bring to trial all accessories to the Archduke's assassination and allow "Austro-Hungarian delegates" (law enforcement officers) to take part in the investigations.

Arrest Major Vojislav Tankosić and civil servant Milan Ciganović who were named as participants in the assassination plot.

Cease the cooperation of the Serbian authorities in the "traffic in arms and explosives across the frontier"; dismiss and punish the officials of Šabac and Loznica frontier service, "guilty of having assisted the perpetrators of the Sarajevo crime".

Provide "explanations" to the Austro-Hungarian Government regarding "Serbian officials" who have expressed themselves in interviews "in terms of hostility to the Austro-Hungarian Government".

Notify the Austro-Hungarian Government "without delay" of the execution of the measures comprised in the ultimatum.

Ultimately, reviewing some of the new Iran policy outlines, it looks like they will saber rattle more but try to keep the deal intact. North Korea has a hard on for Japan seeing that Abe is Trump's closest partner in the region. Is all of this setting the table for negotiations or are we headed for a trap?

The biggest case against Iran will be its presence in Syria and Yemen. They're not leaving and Bibi is barking.

If I had to pick an ally based on nothing more than military pertinence, I think I would rock with the Shias right now. Well coordinated across the region and the least hurt by infighting. The Kurds lost Kirkuk and now much of pre-June 2014 territory acquired after ISIS took Mosul because of being fractured politically. Soleimani got the PUK to withdraw, opening the gates to Kirkuk. It will not be the first or last battle for Kirkuk in this new cycle of violence, the "after-ISIS" stage.

Sunni's are toast in Iraq and elsewhere for allowing extremists to take up their cause in the military theater. Bandar Bush is at fault here big time. He thought he could make the Shias disappear. Now they are more motivated than ever.

All in all, I honestly believe we are moving out of the sectarian bullshit and seeing countries like Turkey say enough is enough and find common cause with Iran. I mean, the Kurds made a huge mistake by holding that referendum in disputed territory. Can't expect the US to bail you out when you went against our advice.
