Thinking of it, I'd assume Bernier doesn't have personal knowledge of angry loser boy reddit subgroups.....which means his campaign is researching for groups of deplorables to call out to. Lol.

In other news, rumours of Fed budget increasing inclusion rate of cap gains from 50% to 75%.

I would guess he knows the subgroups of the alt-right fairly well, or at least his campaign team does. They're a part of his potential libertarian core, so he has to use the available dog whistles.

Here's Christia Freeland's fascist granddaddy enjoying the company of some Nazis in German-occupied Poland.

Worth noting that Freeland's uncle, J.P. Himka, is very controversial among Ukrainian nationalists (indeed, he is hated by many) for his research that reveals Ukrainian participation in crimes against Jews during the holocaust, and for his challenge to the Ukrainian national narrative that the famine of 1933 was a deliberate and targeted act of Stalinist genocide against the Ukrainian people.

So the political views in her family are more complex than this story might indicate.

I find the story about whether it should be reported to be more interesting than the story. President of Estonia used it as an example of how Russia tries to smear folks. It's kind of a neat story on its own, but not worth a lot. I mean, it's interesting to note the long standing wealth/power of many we elect, but I'm not sure I reslly care what what her grandfather was. Trudeau for example shows how strongly held intellectual beliefs don't necessarily get passed from generation to generation

Also FYI Jewish-Ukrainian relations are a delicate subject in Canada that it is best to avoid stirring up. The controversy brought on by the Human Rights Museum ended in an uneasy compromise and a lot of people are still upset.

sure, but I don't think the concern is much of a concern.

if we've made friends with the germans, I think we can let it go if someone is the grand-daughter of a friend of a friend and has no ties to right wing extremism.

I would imagine Ignatieff for example didn't have a squeaky clean family history, but nobody really cared. As we bring over people involved with power structures around the world, it does make sense that they'd bring their wealth and ability to access power stuctures over here. If they have a history with power structures, seems inherent that they'd be in some level involved with the problems of those power structures as well.

It seems almost natural to me that we probably do have a lot of people who's grandparents did pretty shitty things as we do tend to love electing people with long family histories of wealth.

I wasn't aware David Irving wrote about Canada's love for historically entrenched families. (Or that thinking that we shouldn't hold a grand daughter to account for something her family did 80 years ago makes me a holocaust denier.)

Thanks for the informative and thoughtful post doc. Hugs.

Lest anyone think that I am prejudiced against Ukrainian-Canadians, I'll have you know that in my younger years I consumed an enormous number of frozen Cheemo pierogies.

As a Jew, of course, I tend to associate eastern Europeans with only three things: vodka, pierogies and ghetto-sacking.

I don't really like Niki Ashton, but it's shitposting like this that makes me cheer her on.

And who knows, as right wing governance demonstrates its glory down south, perhaps us shy Canadians will be weary of too much winning
