Yes, and I'm willing to bet Ford has more than enough time to fuck up badly enough to help Trudeau.

Dog wrote:There is no denying the stark urban-rural divide. Just look at electoral maps. The suburbs are the frontier/battlelines.

Yeah, I don't deny the divide, I just think it gets overplayed by city observers trying to explain the Trump phenomenon. The problem with the battleground characterization is that it's a sleight of hand. It makes "the country" the source for political heresies that somehow infect the burbs when in fact, I think, the suburban culture itself is the source for much if not most of this stuff.

also, suburban pussies are afraid of country boys taking their women.

Country folk think city folk look down on them which isn’t true. We don’t think about them at all.

Andrea Horwath needs to step down. She had the lead for about a week and a half and she totally failed to capitalize on that momentum. If she couldn't win then, she never will in my opinion. For her replacement I nominate Much Music alumni and a former teenage crush of yours truly: Jennifer Hollett.

Peggy Nash, Paul Dewar & Linda McQuaig are also interesting options.

So any suggestions for a potential new Liberal leader in Ontario? Gerard Kennedy seems like an obvious name to drop here.

I know she's hated & everything, but Kathleen Wynne will actually go down as one of the top 3 Premiers in this shitty province's history. She (and McGuinty too if we wanna really talk about Ontario politics) did more than anybody since at least Davis.

  • Beer. In grocery stores... and fucking weed dispensaries! Popping up all over this once puritan province.
  • We actually have wind farms in our province now. No other Ontario government has ever at least tried to pull its own weight when it comes to the insane energy needs of this province.
  • The sex-ed curriculum, which is actually good if you consider the alternatives.
  • Their scandals are surprisingly mundane, and not all that scandalous.
Wynne was the Premier that made all that happen. Her unemployment numbers are actually really respectable too. And she gave ONE HELL of a press conference on June 8th, the day after the election. Check it out if you have the time, it's well worth it even if you hate her.

When I first heard Trump on Savage Nation, I had a strong feeling his overall message was going to resonate with many people in the country but once it became so divisive that 50 year marriages were destroyed because of his election win, working class people (even a good chunk of black Americans) were closet Trump supporters. I think I wrote in this thread that would be a factor. I've seen two grown white men - one a Deli clerk, the other, a customer, get into fights over the mere mention of Trump. This is in Hampton Bays, Long Island.

The system is broken because of internal turmoil and it looks like it's only going to become uglier. Russia like a boxer giving some jabs and hooks when opportunity srises but America would do the same. We have an empire at this point as Populism spreads rampant through out these here States. Tribalism in 2018. Fuck you Canada -- we are America, King Trump thinks you're completely pathetic.

Supply-side shuffle?

Former Conservative leadership contender Maxime Bernier has been removed from his spot on the party's front bench in the House of Commons, says Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer.

"I have removed Maxime Bernier from the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet, effective immediately" Scheer said in a short statement issued by his office.

"The Shadow Minister for Science, Matt Jeneroux, will assume the additional role of shadow minister for innovation, science and economic development on an interim basis."

Scheer's statement did not give a reason for Bernier's removal.

So Ford's plan to cut Toronto's city council from 47 to 25 people is....interesting. I can see the argument for going with less reps and aligning the wards with provincial/federal ridings, but my God, did you have to decide to do this the day before nominations close for the 47 wards? It seems much too late in the game to try to push this change this year.

he could just cancel and reschedule the election too. municipalities only exist at the behest of the province and have no constitutional right to exist under the canadian constitution.

Yeah, that would be better. At least give them a chance to reasonably run an election.

it really just says more about the premier of the province and the fact that he can't stay out of municipal politics. i don't know why he's worried about the number of councillors in a municipal government if that municipal government isn't concerned. is he going to willy nilly change the structure of other municipal governments? if he's so concerned about toronto municipal politics, he should have run for mayor of the city.

They just had a four year project to determine the number of seats and the boundaries in Toronto, which considered and rejected the 25 seat plan because it was really unbalanced and nobody liked it. This was supposed to be the first election using the new system that came out of it.

Reducing the city council to 25 doesn't seem like the worst idea ever. But everything about this looks like pure unfiltered spite on Ford's part. He hated that council and now he wants to hurt them, pure and simple.

It really doesn't make much of a difference if it is 25 or 45 or 105, other than the population per councillor. And you are not saving much money by doing it. It is just an exercise in how much he can antagonize the municipalities.

The 25 thing cuts the city up into chunks that will shift council way to the right.
