You seem to have reported on a disproportionate number of Canadians in ISIS.

I’m starting to feel like an honorary Canadian. A Canadian woman I interviewed for a story that hasn’t been published yet was sitting in the desert, still wearing the black burqa of the Islamic State, and she said to me: “The only thing I want right now is a cup of Tim Hortons.” Just to show how American I am, I didn’t know what that was and I had to ask her to explain Tim Hortons to me.

So far, from JWR's testimony, they've only told her of the economic costs to her decision and have not told her to do anything. So she has cut her party off at the knees just because?

i think she felt wronged for being demoted and wants to get back at them.

i heard her on the radio this morning saying, "i want to be able to tell my truth" or something like that. there is not individual truth, just the truth. once you start putting your spin on something, it's no longer truth. it's just opinion.

also, i still don't understand this controversy. it seems like something made of nothing to me.

I kinda struggle with this whole thing too. I mean it's he says she said, and she is reputably petty and difficult to work with, but even if the worst is true.... The party in power applying political pressure to protect a large, symbolic Canadian company? Sure, I'd rather they not. But is it really that big a scandal? Feels like business as usual.

Yeah, hard to shake the feeling that:
a) previous Canadian Justice ministers have been subject to similar pressure or worse.
b) if JWR had been moved to a more prestigious portfolio as part of a more general shuffle, rather than singled out and "demoted" to VA, this whole thing would never have blown up.

But in general, I think Trudeau is reaping what he sowed here. He gained a lot of cultural capital by appointing her in the first place. It's now blowing back on him. The fact that it's a Quebec company at a time when Alberta is in shambles is a beautiful win for the Conservative narrative.

I suppose it's also probably a pretty fucking awful defense to just say that shitty things aren't new. That's no excuse.

But nothing happened. There was no DPA. Even if the PMO was pressuring her, nothing came of it. Even if she was demoted for not doing what she was told to do, who cares? The PM has the right to pick cabinet how he sees fit. Justice Minister is not a job guaranteed for life.

So Butts now requesting to appear... He must have something quite damaging to JWR's credibility, otherwise what's the point of dragging this any further?

The other option is he falls on the sword for the whole mess.

Should be good political theater either way.

No one has mentioned the fact that (regardless of the PMO's stupidity in not backing off), the decision not to offer SNC a DPA is an idiotic one and goes against this entire legislative framework as intended in Canada and applied in every other country?

I read an op Ed on Huffington that said JWR was shit at her job, but yeah the DPA is the right course of action given that the charges are likely to get thrown out.

It's also the right course because the company has been undergoing a remediation for the last 7 years. Which is criteria 1 of a DPA.

Nah. People are going to bitch about a nonexistent controversy and say that they will vote against the government, but then they will realize at election time that the other options are just as bad, and everything will be just about the same as it is now.
