Peace on Earth Thread

Post #1 by shredz [Bot] » Sat Mar 07, 2015 1:44 pm

Might as well get it up and running.

The Lithuanian president has told the BBC's Katya Adler that her country is "already under attack" and that conscription is being reintroduced in Lithuania as a response to threats in the region.

Dalia Grybauskaite said that the country needed to be able to protect itself as it was in the "frontier". She said her country bordered Russia and there were "threats and exercises practically every day".

Kim might expect another payday from Seoul, especially considering that when South Koreans go the polls in May they will almost certainly elect a president who favors engagement with Pyongyang.

For a bit of context, Lithuania is either providing or has "agreed to provide" military aid to Ukraine, so yeah Russia is testy.

Furthermore, where do you think Lithuania's weapons are coming from, it being a NATO country?

And recently an announcement of a new NATO weapons-sharing plan: http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense/land/weapons/2015/02/04/nato-weapons-sales-stste-department/22871267

It would be nice if everyone could just stop being dicks for a while.

I think it's a widely believed thought that something terrible could happen with how tense the hawks on both sides are.

Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said the government aims to increase military spending by 6.2 billion kronor ($722 million) over five years

The extra funds would also be used to re-establish a permanent military presence on the island of Gotland, between southern Sweden and Latvia, for the first time in 10 years.

"We want to strengthen our ability to hunt submarines," Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist said at a press conference.

A Boeing rep recently told Nature that, and this is totally real, the company is adding Star Trek and Star Wars sound effects to its laser weapons, so operators know they’re actively firing them.

According to Popular Science, the sound effects will be added to Boeing’s High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD). This system shot down 90 mortar rounds during a test in 2013. In other words, this thing is a beast.

With Trump putting pressure on China on the Spratly Islands, China will rile up Taiwan. Tit for tat strategy of tension.

Russia must halt its covert development of a banned cruise missile system or the United States will seek to destroy it before it becomes operational, Washington’s envoy to NATO said on Tuesday.

The United States believes Russia is developing a ground-launched system in breach of a Cold War treaty that could allow Russia to launch a nuclear strike on Europe at short notice, but Moscow has consistently denied any such violation.

U.S. ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison said Washington remained committed to a diplomatic solution but was prepared to consider a military strike if development of the medium-range system continued.

They obviously won’t come to blows over this, but the rhetoric is probably, I would think, over a wider position signaling. I do wonder what would happen if Russia ever attacked the Baltic States. An exchange of “Strategic” nuclear strikes do not seem completely out of the question in that case. This just seems to be part of the posturing and rhetoric while both sides look to try to size themselves up.
