Yes. This is correct. I am never in favour of coups of elected governments, naturally. That said, stability is (often) better than civil war - not that this is where that's heading. No, this is heading to Erdogan's consolidation of power the likes of which Turk civs would have likely killed him for two months ago.

How likely is it that this is a Gulen movement attempt (with no chance of success from the get go) and not a wider military coup, like the government is saying?

From RT

05:09 GMT
EU hopes to keep Ankara as a “key partner” following a coup attempt in Turkey, said European Council President Donald Tusk, adding that these events will have a significant impact on the region.

“A military coup has no place in Turkey. Disputes cannot be solved with guns. Events continue to unfold, and the situation is still far from stabilization,” Tusk said. “The key question is what Turkey will come out of this crisis. Consequences will be crucial for the region and for the relations with the EU. Our hope is to keep Turkey as a key partner in all dimensions.”

04:58 GMT
A faction of pro-coup soldiers are still fighting fiercely against those who oppose them, Reuters cited Turkish military General Staff as saying in a statement. The soldiers are referring to themselves as the Peace at Home Movement and urging people to stay inside their homes for safety.

Meanwhile, witnesses cited by Reuters said there were clashes between anti-coup protesters and the soldiers surrendering at Istanbul’s Bosphorus Bridge after protesters attacked them.

04:36 GMT
US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, who has been accused by President Erdogan of orchestrating the coup attempt in Turkey, has issued a statement condemning the coup in the strongest terms.

04:20 GMT
A total of 336 people have been detained across the country following the coup attempt in Turkey, the country’s Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said. Meanwhile, Haberturk reported that over 600 people have been detained in Istanbul alone.

So they fired 2700 judges in response to a failed military coup. Is that just opportunism?

Pro Erdogan citizens slit throats of a few soldiers. Whats sad is that they likely had no idea what was going on. Young conscripts following orders.

Yes. For the most part. Those kids taking over the newsrooms - reports had it they were shaking in their boots and saying "just following orders."

Not hard seeing senior (even minorly senior) officers just telling them do it. Sad, sad, sad.

No, I realise what Kerry has said. I'm wondering on what grounds can he do so. Is there a treaty in place (assuming yes). Has he been charged (yes, I believe he's been tried in absentia). Does US recognize court decisions in Turkey (I'm assuming vague). If yes, were any of the court decisions surrounding Gulen made by judges who have since been arrested? (likely no). I need some concrete steps here.

Internet is awash with rumors this was all a false flag operation, which while seeming unlikely is exactly the sort of thing you would probably need to pull if you wanted to overcome secularism in Turkey.

I wonder how much clout the military still has after this. Like if Ergodan tries to purge their senior leadership and replace then with cronies, can the army still resist him? My feeling UB the past has always been that much like in Egypt, democracy in Turkey exists only so long as the military wishes it. Which for my western ass and it's ideals, is probably a good thing.

Sounds conspiracy theoristy and not the sort of thing I tend to believe in, but a weak ass coup like this is a dream come true for Ergo. He has near carte blanche to purge the military/judiciary.

RIP secular Turkey.

The narrative of the military coup behind contained and overthrown by the will of the people on the streets is really cute as well.
