I usually look up the SI prediction article, see where Canada has expectations. They didn't go into these games rated as highly as last time, 14 medals as opposed to , I think, maybe 18 ? The swimming medals bronze or otherwise are impressive, it seems none of them were predicted. By SI, they should be at 2 at the moment. The women do seem to be carrying things at the moment.

The guy who had done the swimming for many years, Steve Armitage was kind of iconic. I suspect that EF had always wanted to do some pbp, and worked for the opportunity. I was surprised to hear him doing it, and until tonight, he's been very good.

Heard a few canadian olympic committee people saying our women's success comes from the fact that for a few years now money is targetted into disciplines with most chance of winningg medals and because women's disciplines often have less deep talent pools (many countries don't invest as heavily in women's discuplines) the arithmetic leads to more canadian money going to women's disciplines leading to more women's medals.

I don't find that particularly flattering for women, but i've heard it more than once from top cdn officials. I also would have thought the top countries didn't restrict women funding (who cares if kazhastan does) and since you have a limited number of countries winning the bulk of medals it wouldn't matter much, but what do I know.

Think of every country in the table that isn't the US or China as one giant country that doesn't invest in women.

Plus it's not just the investment. Huge chunk of the world where women are socially less likely to take up sports than in Canada.

Yeah, it's money + women taking up sports.

I don't think that's an issue in the US/Europe/China/Russia/Australia. Does the block outside those countries really matter ?

It's consistent with the winter games, where canada gets the bulk of its medals in newer sports. We're really good at doing backflips on skis.

Dog, there are like 5 European countries that have better women's soccer teams than us. For the men it's all of them. Like even Iceland, Monaco, probably the Vatican. And that's a sport people care about.
