The only movie I've watched lately was Eye in the Sky. Pretty good suspense thriller. 7/10.

I watched John Wick murder people creatively with a variety of guns and knives for 2 hours the other day. It was good fun if you're in to that kind of thing.

How did xmen apocalypse do.on the whole making money thing.

By killing the franchise i just mean the main xmen team.

If you want to do more deadpool or other spinoffs thats fine.. but i feel like the main xmen team has run its course. After logan im not sure what stories you tell and have them live up to that with the main team.

But yeah make some more deadpool... or x force or whatever. I just think this is fitting way to close the stories of the main xmen team.

Wonder why Resident Evil, a movie neither you nor anyone you know ever wanted, was in the theaters? Because it made 120 million in China and was projected to do so.

Domestically it made just above 20 mil. And yet it is a box office success.

Kong: Skull Island - a mild disappointment for me. Plot-wise just too predictable, by-the-numbers. But the creature design is terrific. And visually looks like an homage to Apocalypse Now in places. Thomas Mann even resembles Sam Bottoms.

Founder - some real good actors in this, but otherwise a conventional biopic. It seemed the script was written carefully to not offend McDonalds corp.

I don't go to McD's anymore but it's sort of important for me. I first went to the one in Moscow in the early 1990s. It was quite special at the time.

It seems every year movie critics elevate a movie to a glorified status with almost complete unanimity, even though it is not particularly good. This is the kind of film you absolutely must like.

I expected to love Get Out but it sorta stinks. It's not funny, scary, entertaining, surprising or well-directed. The lead actor is very good, but that's about the only good thing I can say about it.

Don't know what it is. Do people feel obligated to like Get Out because of the satirical premise? Of course it rings true, but the trailers spoiled that a long time ago. Then you have to watch this tedious thing.

It's like an overlong Key & Peele sketch, but without the humor. Maybe Peele was the premise guy, while Key wrote the funny parts? I kept looking for Key's name in the credits, but couldn't find it, Did they part on bad terms?

And of course all the white liberal critics loved it. But does this prove or defeat Peele's point? I'm not sure. Someone please ask him.

I never saw Scarface until last week. It took me three days to finish it.

I sort of like some of the garish 80s vibes to it and it has some very De Palma long takes. But it's a real chore.

My understanding is that Oliver Stone's original script was a lot more political and critical of US foreign policy. This is stripped of that, which may be for the best (Stone can be preachy). But there's nothing left. These characters are cardboard, and so are most of the sets.

Alien: Covenant was a big, big mess. Four issues:

- It lacked a sense of wonder. Prometheus, for all its faults, had genuine moments of wonder. Scenes in the alien ship were wonderful. Fifield censor things were awesome. The ghosting effects of the engineers and the ship controls were cool. There is none of this here, aside from a poorly animated CGI effect of those bodies in the black goo.

- It drowns under the weight of its exposition. There is a lot of heavy handed business about the meaning of creation or something and it is all explained ponderously. All the fun is sucked out, and the film does not deliver the answers in a satisfying way. Altogether this is almost as joyless as Alien 3.

- The writers make a big deal of the sexual tensions between the two androids. There is a long dialogue scene with double entendres. But it doesn't lead to anything. A sex scene with two Michael Fassbenders would have been amazing. Why not?

- The writing lacks subtlety. Aside from some poor characterization, the ending twist can be seen from a mile away. You can tell that the writers do not respect the audience's intelligence, because the clues are too obvious. Without giving away the ending, there is a cut away from a struggle and then a close-up on a body part - both of which clearly foreshadow the twist to anyone with half a brain. So when the twist finally happens all you can do is roll your eyes.

I think that all of the Weyland shit is dumb and has only made the franchise worse. The best films from the series - Alien and Aliens - were conceptually very simple. Additional exposition and background have given these movies annoying pretentions.

Rewatching James Cameron's Aliens. Not many people know this, but the shots of the ships are practical effects, miniatures. That big tank the military dudes ride in - a miniature. The alien ship is a miniature.

Sigourney Weaver is no more than 2 feet tall but you wouldn't know it because of the magic of the movies. The modesty and simplicity of practical effects is simply stunning. The xenos are magnified grasshoppers. Cheap CGI is ruining cinema.

WW - 9/10

Very good in almost all aspects, except for some cheap CGI in the middle and end, and a few missteps in the last third. Chris Pine is perfect. Gal Gadot is also perfect but I'm not sure how much credit goes to her, the director, or the casting (i.e. just a perfect fit for the character). A point arguing for the latter is that they had all the Amazon's learn her accent. It was both effective in establishing Amazons as different, and in simplifying her job.

Oliver Stone's The Putin Interviews - 5 of 5, every cineliterate person must experience this (just kidding)

I suppose this is more tv than cinema, but here's a serious review. I've watched three of the four episodes and I think the critics are mostly right about Stone. Putin totally controls the narrative, while Stone kisses his ass the whole way through. Putin is the director and screenwriter here. Oliver is just sitting in. Which doesn't mean that the show isn't interesting. You get to see various places where Putin lives and works. It is all carefully staged of course. I notice that Putin decided to present his surroundings as relatively humble: there is no evidence of hi-tech technology, and Putin reminds the viewer that his military budget is 1/10th of America's. So his narrative is: we're lean, modest, but capable.

The beauty to Putin's presentation is that it is very deftly constructed to appeal to all audiences that disapprove of American foreign policy. Left wingers and right wingers. He is a master of very clearly outlining American hypocrisy.

It doesn't seem, at least three eps in, that Stone is willing to prod Putin much on his own domestic politics. Not much is said about privatization policies, crackdown on dissent. Putin at one point said that the proper way to governing is to find the right person to rule and then delegate the power to him (gendered pronoun intended). Putin's sexism is also a stark contrast with Soviet attitudes about the societal role of women.

I think some Western viewers might be surprised to learn a few interesting things about Russia in the 1990s. Putin sets the table here and explains why he believes Americans are to blame for Russia's misery. He also makes an interesting accusation that the US funded extremist groups during the Chechnya war. Much of what he says is plausible because the US has a history of supporting extremist groups. That cat is out of the bag, and Putin exploits the fact which will supply him with serious political ammunition for years to come. Forms of popular dissent at home and in nearby countries can be explained away as US interference.

Many softball questions from Stone about the Ukraine crisis. Doesn't even ask him about Russian troops in Donbass. Putin did not even need to deny it.

At the risk of saying something I will regret, I think the new Luc Besson project, Valerian, looks very cool. I don't like the actors, but judging by the images this looks like comic books brought to life in the best possible way.

Argh, Valerian was so close to being great. So close, but flubs it in the end.

The first two acts are very good. I'm a big fan of French sci-fi comics, particularly the work of Moebius/Jodorowsky. I'm also familiar with the source material here. The storytelling is often full of absurdities. There is open ambiguity about technology and science, as well as the treatment of space and time. Things often do not make sense and that is almost conventional: the purpose of the story is to create awe, and images serve as massive tableaus which are loosely linked in the causal sense. The values derive from similar premises as that of art cinema, in which storytelling avoids a central conflict and scenes embrace happenstance.

But the third act is a shitty compromise done to make the story work for the American market. It is American storytelling, the worst kind. They explain everything and alienate the kind of viewer who bothered to show up. The kind of viewer they coveted never even made it into the theater, because we know that this is a box office bomb. The third act is more Roddenberry than Jodorowsky, with some stupid allegory about colonialism. You go from amazing set pieces to long dialogue scenes. Exasperating.

Again, the first two acts are some really good cinema. Some people will dismiss the film's silliness and some moments of narrative incoherence (e.g., Rihanna's fate). But I will take this any day of the week over the competence and coherence of the soulless Marvel products, where every cause leads the effect and for what purpose? So we can celebrate weapon manufacturers like Tony Stark?
