"Why, because she cut her hair?"
"No, it's more serious this time, and I'm telling you because we found someone through the school. A children's specialist."
"What exactly did she do, did she set the house on fire?"
"She was masturbating, Don. In front of a friend. Does that seem normal to you?"

From grantland piece:

Mad Men averages 2.6 million viewers per episode.

Walking dead averages 10 (the number after 9) million.

And apparently people watch 2.5 Men and Big Bang Theory. If you want ratings, you have to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Yeah and they apparently use fractions instead of the more intellectual decimal points like the mongadongs they are.

The season premiere of Mad Men's sixth season was refreshing. While the dialogue often seems more present day than period, they weave their look into the changing world in an exceedingly charming way.

Also nice that when winter comes to Mad Men, Don simply jaunts to Hawaii to do research for an ad, rather than say, white zombees walking past a portly whimpering ball-less fellow.

My thoughts:

The first half was a little sloppy. That cut from the doorman receiving CPR to him returning to work was especially jarring. And I'm not sure Betty's child-rape jokes worked with her established character. That said, the second half, and in particular, how everything came together in Don's final exchange with his neighbour worked particularly well, though I can't say the revelation about his new infidelities was especially surprising, if it was meant to be (which, given how the reveal was a sort of reverse ape of the series premiere's, I think it was meant to be, to a degree). Part of that might just be that the scene between Don and his neighbour's wife fell a little flat, but I've got a lot of hope, if only because it's great to see Linda Cardellini. As for non-Don stuff, Peggy and the world surrounding her was a treat to watch in this episode. It's such a perfect and natural evolution for her to become the new, maybe better Don, and the stuff between her and Abe, her new boss, and Stan was too great - it's going to kill me to watch some or all of those relationships become strained. Roger's stuff, so-so. His outburst at the wake was a little too tactless from his standpoint and the writing's. That said, he's a much more interesting character to give a psychiatrist than Betty. And the bit where he receives the shoeshine kit, while a little convenient for my liking, was also a great moment.

I could go on for a while. Loved all the new hairstyles. Harry is such a lovable embarrassment. Pete looks like he belongs in a kilt. And yes, the first punch can't come soon enough. Liked the new suck-up and what we've seen of the additions to creative. Need more Ginsberg. Sally's voice dropped eight octaves. Liked the new suck-up: there's an eagerness to him that's wonderfully ingratiating. Etc. etc. etc.

All in all, I thought it was solid. It's a season opener, so picking it apart for story isn't so worthwhile; too many pieces being set. But I'm so happy to have this show back.

don's gonna kill his alter ego and become himself again. herd it here first.

Betty's cool again. Or finally cool. Or totally insane (tolerable).

Roger cracks me up so much, his character is the best example of a career acting job I've ever seen. At the psychiatrist cracking jokes and berating him for not laughing, I've done that in my head. So good. I love this shit.

I get that they want to draw parallels/contrast between Campbell and Draper, but it's getting a little too obvious the way they're contrasting their stories. This last episode was just Don doing something and totally getting away with it while Pete tried to do the same thing and ended up getting a woman beaten up and ruining his (albeit already ruined) marriage.

I think Craig has the right idea. Think back to the sink-fixing last season. A lot of Pete's character stems from how much he wants to be what Don is. That said, I don't mind the parallels and I don't think this episode crossed the line. Don's storyline didn't focus on getting away with it, it focused on guilt, his warped sex drive, etc. If the show was reduced to that kind of straight binary, then yeah, I'd have a problem with it, but I didn't find it overly convenient.

I think (and I'm sure I'm not the only one), that this is the return of Dick Whitman. With the whorehouse scene we see why he devalues women so much and we've already seen hints at how he doesn't have an identity.

So I think the beginning of the end will culminate with him leaving the company, rejoining with Peggy, Whitmaning, and then getting some solace. Something like finding mom.
