Wiig and Mckinnon are lovely. : )

Really don't understand the casting of the big trainwreck from SNL. And if all we get is slapstick from the other one it might be proof that the '80s are better at everything [strike]Ghostbusters[/strike].

Now that a woman has revealed that she fucked Bowie in 1972 when she was 15, will we think of David the same way as we think of Roman Polanski? Or maybe not, considering that Bowie was such a golden god?

Well it's not a new revelation, I doubt it changes perceptions of him. Plus there's a bit of a difference between having consensual sex with a 15 year old and non-consensual sex with a 13 year old.

I don't know. It is not usually touted as a difference. Besides the Polanski case is quite ambiguous concerning consent too.

Review: “Agitprop!” at the Brooklyn Museum - http://www.blouinartinfo.com/news/story ... lyn-museum

After seeing “Agitprop!” at the Brooklyn Museum I had the opening of Billie Holiday’s 1939 song “Strange Fruit” stuck in my head: that piercing trumpet trill and the haunting opening lines, “Southern trees bear a strange fruit/Blood on the leaves and blood at the root.” It’s not a catchy song, but Holiday’s voice and the powerful images conjured through her lyricism have always had this lingering effect on me. One of a few songs included in the exhibition, it’s a perfect example of the theme that unites the photographs, films, prints, banners, street actions, music, digital files, and web platforms on display: work that is not just political but that acts as a means of disseminating information to influence social consciousness.

An amalgamation of agitation and propaganda, the word agitprop originated in the Soviet Union, referring to a department within the Communist Party responsible for, among other things, all forms of public communication, generating support for party policies, and political education in schools. Rather than present a general swath of these early efforts, the Brooklyn Museum focuses on the role of women in these pursuits (this is organized by the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, after all), with depictions of, and contributions by, Soviet women that demonstrate one tenet of Bolshevism: gender equality, even if it did not play out quite that way in Bolshevik life. For example, Valentina Kulagina’s posters proclaim, “Women Workers! Strengthen the Shock Brigade/Master Technology and Increase the Ranks of Proleterian Specialists!”

Expanding beyond agitprop’s most literal definition, several historic cases of this type of activism are presented, many with special attention to work by women: Tina Modotti’s photographs used to support socialism in Mexico, images from the Women’s Suffrage Parade in 1913, anti-lynching campaigns by the naacp, and popular works like the 1920 film Within Our Gates by Oscar Micheaux, the “father of black cinema,” all setting the scene for contemporary work to follow.

The show’s curation defers to artists’ acting as educators, the museum providing more a framework by which to grasp the information presented. In keeping with this, the contemporary section takes an unusual format: It’s not yet complete—two more sections of work were yet to be added as of the December opening, the first on February 17, the next on April 6, 2016. In a move that seems to have been engineered by the museum to take power out of its own hands, and to better contextualize work created in opposition to institutionalized thought, each new wave of contemporary work is selected by the previous round of artists included.

The contemporary pieces on view alternate between funny, enlightening, and heartrending. A stack of détourned New York Times papers created by the Yes Men reworks an edition from July 2009, and thus history, proclaiming “Iraq War Ends” on its front cover and breaking the news of a treason indictment of George W. Bush. Martha Rosler’s Tron (Amputee), 1970, one of a series of photomontages created during the height of the Vietnam War, juxtaposes a young Vietnamese woman with an amputated leg against a pristine American interior. A video of Los Angeles Poverty Department’s 2014 Walk the Talk parade documents the event that honors various residents of L.A.’s Skid Row, the poorest area in the city.

These works fulfill agitprop’s intention: to stick with you, and hold sway. As with Holiday’s song, they stay in mind because of not just their message but the form in which that message is delivered. This show places faith in art’s ability to communicate in ways more expressive, and perhaps consequently more persuasive, than purely journalistic or documentarian modes of communication. (It’s fitting that the exhibition circles around the permanent home of one such example, Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party.) Coupled with the ability to be distributed en masse, one finds a formidable tool. The issues at hand are already compelling; the works exhibited make them only more so. I look forward to repeat trips as the exhibition evolves, to observe how this potent conversation continues.
