Started Wonder Woman.

I love the role model. But the movie was so hammy. Couldn't get passed the first 30 minutes.

Like I get portraying WW2 germans as 'evil'. But how you portray any protagonist in ww1 as good or evil is disturbing.

Is the banana into owning real estate? Into doing fling flangs with municipal by-laws to increase the value of his properties? Does the banana talk about helping the working class while working in corruption and minimizing personal taxes by doing further fling flangs? Is the banana cold and calculating, but also prone to emotional reactivity? Does the banana have a hot younger wife?

On the other hand, I don’t think Trump’s grandparents were slave owners.

Tough call.

I have it on good authority that AD worships Kaiser Wilhelm the II, described by historians as a "swaggering militarist," to whom he frequently refers as a "pretty good guy" and "misunderstood genius."

Beaker was alluding to the very poorly executed twist ending which revealed the identity of Aries...

I can hardly remember the plot though. Was the bad guy Ares? He was pretending to be a good guy the whole time or something? Meh, doesn't matter.

Speaking of WWI Germans not being portrayed as evil, just watched Frantz. Should be up your alley in that regard, nanners. Been meaning to watch it since I read a review some time ago. The premise is interesting, unfortunately the film turned out to wallow in over-sentimentality and fluff. 4/10. Quite disappointed.

Do any of you guys subscribe to indie/classic/foreign film streaming services? Been looking at this and a few seem interesting: Sundance Now, Fandor, Mubi piqued my interest most from what I’ve seen. Anybody tried it?

As you could tell, I got a new TV and soundbar/woofer a few weeks ago and am trying to find uses for it. Didn’t watch much TV, other than some netflix and sports (on fast forward). Netflix has decent series, harder to find decent movies. Most movies infuriate me and I had largely given up and read in the evenings and on the train. Trying to cut back on reading and increase tv, I guess.

Also, I don’t GregTV (links to pirated content and whatnot). Pain in the ass to save a few bucks, I found. These things are like 7-10 bucks a month and some of them are curated -which comes in handy when faced with content you’ve never heard of.

Thank you for your all of your feedback.

I subscribed to Mubi -you get one film or documentary or short per day that stays available for 30 days. Basically 30 pieces available with one changing per day. Extensive curation, but that was thr appeal to me.

Watched a black and white movie about a donkey so far (Au hasard, Baltazar. France, 1966). Watched it twice, actually. First time, I really liked the premise (follow the world throughout the lifetime of a donkey) but was disapointed with the delivery. Very minimal dialogue and people’s actions seemed unatural and caricatured. Then I read up more extensively on it (was intrigued enough) and saw that it was inspired by Dostoevsky’s The Idiot and watched it again from that point of view (of the donkey appearing a passive idiot, but in reality a purehearted observer of people (being mostly crappy). The ascetic and caricatured nature of the film aims to heighten the message in that context. I personally prefer more nuance but can understand how being so concise and to the point serves the aims of the film. Some poignant scenes in there (such as one where the donkey and some other caged animals stare at each other in a sorta way that conveys a common understanding of their condition). Anywho, best donkey movie I’ve seen since the donkey from shrek!

The couple shorts I saw, I didn’t like. And also saw a recent German film, that was an overall quite forgettable tale of an airline stewardess that grows tired of the grind.

Will keep you posted on more, internets!

Fun fact on the donkey movie: The director (Robert Bresson, who was in his 60s at the time) apparently made a number of unwanted advances to the young actress who played the part of the donkey’s human equivalent in the film.

When I read that I felt he gave real world validation to the premise of his movie (people do bad shit which good hearted people suffer stoically). Nice performing art on his part!

Not kidding around, hated it. Boring and charmless throughout.

But some people sounded like they had a good time. I've read the books and watched all the older movies and shows, so I had a frame of reference from which to judge.

My daughter really liked it, but she tends to like weird stuff. If your kids liked it, along the same lines are Song of the Sea and the Book of Life. She was really into those two. Both are available on the Netflix machine.

Dr C, I watched Alexander Nevsky (a 1938 Soviet nationalist propaganda epic film to prep the citizenry for the upcoming German invasion) on the Mubi machine last night. Quite enjoyable from a cinematographical and historical perspective and very good score by Prokofiev. Made for an entertaining evening.

Watched Silence last night(the 2016 scorsese version). Excruciatingly slow and dull, which I guess was intentional to get across the missionaries’ plight. Makes for bad viewing, but it does turn into an interesting look at missionary/religious zeal (was likely meant to show devotion, but one person’s devotion is another’s zeal). For that painstakingly constructed view I give it a 6.5/10.

Episode VIII - Better than the prequels, not better than The Force Awakens. There's some good stuff in this one, but some other stuff drags on.
