Carol - of course it's good, it's Todd Haynes.

Hateful Eight - I don't know man, I have to rewatch it again, but I don't feel like it. It wasn't bad, I liked the characters, just...maybe a bit too loaded.

Selma was better than I expected. Righteous Hollywood filmmaking done right, for the most part. A film about self-declared moral certainty is actually refreshing in this deeply cynical day and age. 8/10.

Definitely a better film than The Imitation Game.

Trainwreck - A cool romcom, ya just fall in love with Amy and Bill Hader's relationship. John Cena almost fucked the movie up. Even Lebron was a better actor.

Couples Retreat was just on my local TV. Vince Vaughn is a real gem. So funny. It's a film full of good jokes and sexy babes (all PG of course). Good clean fun.

It'd figure into any top 5 list of the 2010s.

The Gods of Egypt is pretty silly, but I liked it. An old school fantasy adventure with gorgeous CGI eye candy.

Altogether it was like a very expensive Cannon film.

Jump-starting a 70s Hollywood binge.

Charley Varrick - 8/10
Being There - 8/10
Time After Time - 7/10

Just picking these randomly. Varrick is the big surprise - plays a lot like a Coens brothers movie.

I also watched hardcore Henry, and yeah, it's great. I agree that it's a one off for filming style, but I bet we get a few more mindless pure action movies in the next few years. We call other flicks action-driven, but this thing literally never went more than two minutes without action.

I guess you could argue that this is just a continuation of what John wick started in that way, so still not really revolutionary.

How to Murder Your Wife - 6/10
.. another fun Axelrod script .. amusingly sexist and racist throughout and interesting to watch for that reason .. the only black people in this are the servants .. I also like movies that have interesting set design and in this one Jack Lemmon has the most amazing urban condo .. Virna Lisi is in a bikini.

Taking of Pelham 123 (the 1974 one) - 5/10
.. used to be a classic, but now just looks like a string of cops-and-robbers stereotypes - partly due to how influential this has been on subsequent films .. also sexist and racist - in one scene Matthau refers to a group of Japanese businessmen as a bunch of monkeys.

I also rewatched Miller's Crossing this weekend (which is terrific). Had no idea that Barry Sonnenfeld was the cinematographer. After doing some checking, I realized that Sonnenfeld was the Coens' go-to cinematographer from Blood Simple up to this (and then moved on to directing).

His visual ideas are quite brilliant. Gorgeous colors and a real skill for framing faces. I think much more impressionistic than Roger Deakings. As a director he never works with this kind of material, but you can see many similar visual ideas as what came later with Men in Black, etc.

It also appears that the Coens discovered Carter Burwell, who worked almost exclusively with them in the early years. Recently he scored Carol.

Someone should write a paper on 1980s Hollywood depictions of middle-to-upper class housing (maybe I will) - mostly in the Reagan years, spanning the transition out of the cold war.

Spielberg probably started this in the 70s. Hollywood created a myth about what an American middle class household is like. Gorgeous suburban houses, a couple of floors and an attic. Often set in the fall (not sure why). Usually country style. Oftentimes someone is making a turkey - usually the mother. There is always a sizable chunk of land surrounding the house.

I don't know where Hollywood found these houses, but they were always great to look at. The added fact that they were (mythically) associated with middle class living is one of the reasons Americans won the cold war (because these films were illegally trickling into Eastern block countries on VHS tapes).

Examples: Planes, Trains and Automobiles (ending), Midnight Run (ex-wife's house). Christmas Vacation's house looked more shitty than those, but still pretty good. By the time the Soviet Union goes out of business, in the early 1990s, Hollywood becomes enamored with yuppies and more upper class housing. Do people remember Tom Cruise's digs in The Firm?
