The Men's Rights and White power stuff is actually getting more prevalent in comic book fandom. The success of the Marvel movies has brought a lot of new women and minority readers into comic books. As a result, publishers, especially Marvel, have been making new books with female and minority heroes targeting those new readers. There is a small vocal segment of comic book fans who are furious about having to now share their historically white male medium.

The dark and gritty DC movies were expected to be "real" comic book movies, as opposed to Marvel's cinematic universe who sold out and pandered to non-comic book fans, especially women, by making movies with humour, bright colours, attractive male leads, and too many female and minority secondary characters.

Just wait until Black Panther and Captain Marvel come out. It's going to be a fucking shit show.

On the topic of comic book films, I finally saw Deadpool a couple of months back. It will date very quickly, and so never be a 'classic', but in the moment it was good fun. 7/10

The rest of the comic book films I can more or less do without. Changing a serial or episodic story, with huge numbers of interwoven characters and stories, into a quick-and-dirty feature film just never satisfies from a storytelling point of view. So you're left with state-of-the-art combat sequences, special effects, and some quips and one-liners, but a a gaping hole at the heart of the film.

They keep saying that Black Widow can't carry her own film, which blows my mind, because I think she's one of the more interesting Avengers characters in existence.

I'd go see it for sure.

Don't Breathe - crazy fun horror flick from Sam Raimi and the guy who remade The Evil Dead. Loved the Panic Room-style virtual cam shots too.

Totally. Without her the first Avengers movie would have been much worse.

I can see then thinking she's a complicated character to fit into a staring role, and they're kinda right. She's a little closed off and mysterious. But that's also a goldmine of material on which to base the story. You don't have to have it all be external. To me the reason Iron Man 1 and Captain America 1 were better than expected was they depended heavily on things going on inside the main character, not just their heroic actions.

Marvel seems to have realized that comic book isn't really a genre. It's an attribute you can add to other genres, like action, adventure, or period piece war movie. So they could do a spy thriller Black Widow. Or crime thriller, Or detective. She doesn't need to do much "action" at all to move things along.

Black widow alone isn't really enough to carry a movie. Iron man and Thor can get away with it because they have the powers for the action scenes and such. I mean sure, you could make a good widow movie. In fact they have made plenty of movies about the female Soviet spy girl. Wasn't Angelina in one of those a while back? But those movies aren't really in the mold of the Marvel universe and I see no reason why they would deviate from the formula that is killing it for them.

That said, it's not like they really make solo movies anymore. Captain America movies are obviously not just him running around any more. So they could easily put out a black widow titled movie with a few other people in the cast to mix it up a bit. For example, they could probably put together something around her exploring her history with the red room and developing her relationship with Banner.

Sully Sullenberg: Airport Pilot was decent enough. I appreciated the skill with which the flashback structure was constructed. Tom Hanks emotes well as usual.

One scene felt like native advertising for Marriott. Really cringey.

Well up yours doc. I think Anna Kendrick is both talented and pretty. Although I do confess that she looks a bit like Adam Scott. A friend of mine used to have a thing for her in a big way, but now he can't even look at her without seeing Adam Scott. And he is not attracted to Adam Scott. Not that I know of, anyway.

A Kind of Murder was surprisingly good. Due to the poor reviews I wasn't expecting much. But this is a really good-looking flick with beautiful staging and cinematography.

I think the negative reviews are mainly due to the story, which does not tie up the loose ends in a very clear way. I didn't really care though, because the execution of the set-up is worth it. I haven't read the Patricia Highsmith source material, so I don't know if they adapted it well.

The movie also features some extravagant interior design, captured using rich, saturated color. Takes me back to the years where Hollywood used to revel in fairytale upperclass wealth, with 80s flicks like Into the Night and Ruthless People and further back to the 50s and 60s with How to Murder Your Wife and Douglas Sirk movies. It's like window shopping.

Sirk is the obvious influence here, because this also borrows the narrative undertones of upperclass malaise. I like these rich colors, and am reminded just how much I dislike the look of most contemporary Hollywood films.

I watch the latest installment of Bourne and the bond flick Specter. The Bourne was as expected the same plot line as the others, and the Bond was a turn your brain off and watch various chase scenes car vs car, plane versus car, boat versus helicopter... Perfect for watching after a pile of drinks.

Manchester by the Sea was fine. Kinda Ordinary People-ish. It will probably win Best Picture or something. I think it will be similarly forgotten later.

* some possible spoilers *

Saw La La Land, which was mostly fine. But I had some complaints about it.

- It is basically a 50s, Gene Kelly-style, musical but it doesn't have a comic foil. I could have used a Donald O'Connor-type supporting character to lighten things up a bit. There are a couple of funny moments, but very little comic energy.

- The central conflict is poorly written. The girl just suddenly gets upset at the boy without warning and right away they part.

- The ending is a little confusing in terms of what it is trying to say. I think I figured it out, but it did not sit well.

- Many of the sets are beautiful, but a select few scenes are a touch hideous. The opening number is just bizarre. Poorly dressed people dancing on Camrys. I don't get this, because most of the rest of movie is very glossy.

You're too generous on this one doc. Yes the plotting of the central conflict was definitely lazy writing. Yes there's a lack of comic energy apart from a few moments of classic Emma Stone charm. But it's worse than that. The dance numbers are boring for a film that is self-consciously aping the Golden Age of the genre. And as for the singing - anytime you put moviestars in movie musicals, the best you'll get are competent performances, never brilliant ones. None of the music will stand the test of time. I am certain of this. Having the genuine talent of John Legend in the film only made this more noticeable IMO.

In ten years this movie will be remembered as a so-so homage to better films. If God forbid it wins the Best Picture Oscar, it will be considered the worst winner since Crash. Unless God forbid Crash has been rehabilitated by then.

The closing number was beautifully done though. And there were certainly nice moments.

Arrival was all right, save for some really dumb stuff about military sabotage, as well as China and Russia presented in terms of predictable Western stereotypes.

All in all, a dime store Malick with sci-fi elements.

The script was meh, felt robotic mainly at the beginning. I think it fell a bit flat, but flat is refreshing nowadays in a weird way.
