Also I thought all storm troopers were clones? So how did that black guy become a storm trooper?

The Jedis bought a clone army (from a planet that seems like it could conquer the whole universe if it felt like it. They really ought to have addressed that in some way. ) but once they took delivery I'm under the impression they had to restock the ranks from the civilian population. I don't think they gave us any clues in the movies about when things changed, but in ep 3 it was all clones, but by ep 7 it's clear they're not just recruiting to fill ranks, but basically resorting to abductions and slavery.

MP wrote:I liked it, but I agree the former storm trooper fighting with Luke's lightsaber was a stretch.

I'm not sure whether I'm remembering this from the book or a cut scene or something but apparently the stormtroopers get combat training so it wouldn't be that much out of the ordinary. They had him fight that other trooper with whatever the stick was called.

The only thing about Kylo Ren taking off is helmet that I wasn't a fan of is that I think they did it too early, IMO it would have been a better reveal when he sees his Dad. It gives that scene even more emotional impact (especially when I saw the twist coming partway through the movie :().

I initially wondered how in the world galaxy that Ren would lose to Rey at the end of the movie, but they did specifically set up how powerful Chewie's bow is throughout the whole movie. So it's not unreasonable to assume it did quite a bit of damage to Ren, which weakened him enough for Rey to have the upper hand, especially as she realized the power of the force she has in her.

Overall, after a bit of time, I think this stays where I initially have the movie in my rankings. 4 = 5, 6 = 7, 3, 1, 2. 4/5 and 6/7 are toss-ups, with 3 definitely better than 1 and 2. While some of the plot re-hashing was a bit lame, I think it did a really solid job of introducing the new characters. Daisy Ridley absolutely killed it in the movie, what a great find on whoever found her. I also did like the camaraderie between Poe/Finn.

I can't wait for Yodaesque Luke in the next movie  :hellyeah:

The reason 3 isn't placed within the best is just st pure nostalgia.

TBH, I have trouble putting 3 behind any movie (maybe 5).

I don't understand any of the fondness for Ep. III.

I'll grant that Jedi is pretty bad in some ways and gets a lot of help from nostalgia. But Revenge of the Sith might be the worst-written film of the whole bunch, at least in terms of bad dialogue undermining climactic scenes. And even if it doesn't indulge in the spectacular stupidity of the first prequel and the cringeworthy courtship of the second prequel, its overcooked CGI sins are just as egregious if not even more so.

Fuck the dialogue, the acting, the cgi. Fuck it all.

The story man. The slaughtering of children. The despair.. The death. The birth. It's the strongest in terms of story.

So it's good because it's dark?

FWIW, I think the story is shit too. Even without considering dialogue, the broad strokes for Anakin's seduction by the darkside is poorly done IMO.

As for Return of the Jedi, yes that is a poorly written scene. But by far the worst written and acted scene in Jedi is the one where Luke reveals to Leia that Vader is his father and they are brother and sister. It is unwatchable. Like every important scene in Sith.

Now, I think you can definitely make a strong case that The Force Awakens is better than Jedi. I'll have to re-watch it before I can say.

At the very least it looks like Rogue One will be the best looking Star Wars movie.

I think I might be the only person I've talked to who wasn't all that impressed by R1. They got the feel of the original movies down, but it felt to me like they were trying to hard instead of just letting it happen.

The same movie that is first for 90%+ of Star Wars fans.... Empire.

1) Empire
2) Rogue One
3) New Hope
4) Force Awakens
5) Jedi
6) Sith
7) Clones
8) Phantom

I have a similar list. Except I haven't ranked Force Awakens. I want to see what happens in e8 before deciding if it was repetitive dribble or a buildup to something.

Oh. I also have Phantom at #4. Remove jar jar and it's a pretty good movie.

I need to watch it a few more times before I can form a better opinion on it, but I wasn't blown away by it on my initial viewing. But I think a lot of that was due to trying to get used to the new characters/places in the movie.

Right now I would have Eps 4-7, and maybe 3 above it.

The Episode VIII is called "The Last Jedi".

Image

The noun "jedi" can be both singular and plural, so the title doesn't indicate whether the last Jedi is Luke or Luke and Rey.

Have we established what the plural of Jedi is. Is it still Jedi?

Could "the last Jedi" refer to more than one?

Yoda said he'd be a Jedi when he confronted Vader. He confronted Vader and turned him enough to kill the emperor. Vader briefly converted to his good (Jedi) side before dying and becoming one with the force. Luke becomes the last Jedi at the moment his father dies after meeting all the qualifications set forth for him by Yoda.

What's the big question about it? The only question is whether Rey becomes a Jedi with him. And whether she can convert her cousin / brother to the light side of the force.

It's not clear if any of the above state that Luke was to be the last jedi *at a certain point in time* but not exclude the possibility of other jedi being formed after that point.

http://www.starwars.com/databank/kylo-ren

A dark side warrior with a mysterious past, Kylo Ren was neither Jedi nor Sith, but a product of both sides’ teachings. Once an apprentice of Luke Skywalker’s, he killed his fellow students and drove Skywalker into exile, becoming a First Order warlord and servant of Supreme Leader Snoke. Kylo was determined to destroy the last remnants of the Jedi, fulfilling the legacy of Darth Vader.

Both the First Order and the Resistance were determined to locate Lor San Tekka, a galactic scout rumored to know how to find Skywalker. Kylo found San Tekka on Jakku and killed him, but not before San Tekka gave a bit of a star map to the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. When Kylo captured Poe, he discovered the map was now in the memory banks of BB-8, an astromech on Jakku. By finding the lost droid, the First Order could locate Skywalker and extinguish the Resistance’s last hope.
