Franchise Hockey Manager (RIP EHM) (3/26/15 update: EHM is alive again, guys)

Post #1 by Cao » Sat May 18, 2013 4:35 am

Apparently OOTP (Football Manager, Out of the Park) is developing a hockey sim.

Some discussions about the beta here, which can be downloaded upon pre-order.

Anyone try it out?

I have it, it's a bit flaky. Waiting for a more finalized build before I spend too much time on it.

Got a long ways to go to beat EHM05. Especially for online play.

OOTP is phenomenal. Eventually FHM will get there although I'm guessing it will be about 2-3 years before it will be full featured enough to run a real online league.

You want a game engine that supports several features such as completely fictional players for a fantasy draft to start the league, the ability to have at least 24 online teams, the stability necessary for a league to last 20-30 seasons (and hopefully more) and unfucked financials (something that even the current version of OOTP struggles with).

Has it gotten there recently? Last one I bought was 8 and it got boring pretty quick. No scouting at all and players would just fall apart which is cool, but, it'd be nice if you got some sort of warning signs or an injury to justify it. EHM 05 despite it's ancient engine supports 30 online and the financials are generous, but, the cap keeps it under control.

It's changed a lot since 8. There's really nothing that compares for baseball these days. Tons of options for how to set up a league. Some leagues use full scouting while others have it turned off. The randomness of talent bumps and lumps is entirely controllable. I prefer a good bit of unpredictability to keep things interesting and make later round draft picks potentially useful.

I like the unpredictability, but, when a few seasons in a row an MVP or Cy Young candidate totally implode gets fucking annoying. I never really messed around with the options though.

When online is added we must get a broads league going. I will draft shitty, throw big bucks at average player, consistently trade my prospects for rentals and finish bottom 5, but I will continue talking shit.

Got it. Though there was a crash in my first run where a goalie got injured mid game and I couldn't leave the lines menu because I had an open roster spot.

Until they add fantasy leagues for online play, I don't think it's worth starting a long term league. But I'll definitely buy the game even if someone just starts something for fun.

Am I correct in assuming that this version of the game is real teams/players only?
