DirectX 12 and GPU advantages

Post #1 by HS » Thu Aug 20, 2015 1:43 pm

http://arstechnica.co.uk/gaming/2015/08/directx-12-tested-an-early-win-for-amd-and-disappointment-for-nvidia/

Pretty interesting read. One thing I'm drawing from all this is that NVIDIA needs to make a driver that works more efficiently with DX12.

Nvidia does not give a single fuck. They own the market.

If the performance advantages of AMD are for real, no they don't own the market.

The performance advantages for AMD uncap how their drivers for DX11 limited them and bring them even with Nvidia, a place they haven't been for a long fucking time. DX12 is still years away from even having an impact on the martketplace so let's just see if AMD even survives that long. Until then Nvidia owns the market.

Gaming companies are already implementing DX12 into future games -- the next Assassin's Creed being one of the major ones. Pretty sure Battlefield 5 is implementing DX12 as well.

There are zero total games released using DX12 so far. Zero. We're years away from it having an impact on the marketplace. And I'll bet that if benchmarks(this one even being questionable with conflicting information) stay true and Nvidia isn't blowing AMD out of the water like they have for years that they just might work on them a little bit an push AMD back under thei thumb.

Nah, there's one game released with DX12 susf

http://www.ashesofthesingularity.com/game/faq

"What is a benchmark?"

"A benchmark is a test to see how well your PC can run a program. With "Ashes of the Singularity," the benchmark will run a scene of the game and will give you a score at the end so that you can see how effectively your PC will be able to handle it. While the game is optimized for DirectX 12, users with DirectX 9, 10, and 11 will be able to run the benchmark."

OK, OK, it's only an alpha :danson:

People buying gaming systems today aren't primarily looking at the currently released games. They're probably hoping to get two or three years out of their rig so they do care about how new releases over that period will perform on their hardware.

That said, those results looked more like parity than a huge AMD advantage. AMD being back in the game is good for everyone, especially consumers.

AMD being able to compete would be great, but, this is early days and I think it's foolhardy to assume that Nvidia will receive essentially zero boost from dx11 to dx12.

No one's saying that NVIDIA won't get their shit together.
