Portugal

Post #1 by MP » Wed May 03, 2017 10:43 am

So booked two weeks in Portugal in mid July with just Mrs. Plan.

Our Itinerary is looking like:
Lisbon 3 nights
Algrave/Salem a 3 nights
Evora
Nazare 2 night
Coimbra
Douro Valley
Porto 2 night

Any thought tips? Planning on renting a car.

So you think Seville and Grenada would be better than Nazare to Porto?

Go to Sevilla instead of Algarve.

Haven't been to Porto, but have heard lots of good -will definately go sometime.

Lisbon was nice -small, old, quaint -plenty hole in the wall eateries in the old town that are nice. Beaches in the suburbs are decent too. Some interesting monestaries (jeronimo) in the region too.

Algarve was very disapointing. Typical euro trash filled southern europe beach spot.

Haven't been to nazare, but get the feeling that could be a little bit of a tourist trap. Maybe a day trip from Lisbon.

Sevilla is fantastic. Miles ahead of Algarve. Well, if you like architecture and a cool city vibe -if you like drunken boorish brits and germans, go to Algarve.

Thanks Dog, I think some trashy beach time is ok, might scale it back though.

So Lisbon, Algrave, Seville, Madrid, and Porto? Or is that biting off too much in two weeks?

Seems doable to me.

Lisbon - 3-4 days
Porto - 2-3 days
Algarve - 2-3 hours
Sevilla - 3 days
Madrid - 4 days

Seriously, depends how you like to travel. Can you fly into Lisbon and out of Madrid? That would help. We did Madrid-Sevilla-Barcelona-Costa Brava (beach north of Barcelona) in 2 weeks two summers ago. It was fine, but we don't mind moving around. Your itinerary seems even more compressed.

Dog, did you go to the Algarve beaches? Are there any where toplessness is banned? How about beaches near Lisbon? Asking for a conservative friend who doesn't like explaining things to his kids.

I can't remember if there was nudity at the beaches, but really your friend is a weirdo.

I preferred the beaches in the lisbon suburbs (estoril and cascais) to algarve, though. Not for the beaches themselves, but the people. Lisbon beaches had locals and algarve beaches, as you may have seen in my rants, had british-german euro-trash.

My friend is usually ok, but yes, it this case he's being weird.

I actually didn't mind the Algarve, although I went during Euro2004 so maybe it was different than the usual crowd.

The crowd seemed fine to me, but whatever. I enjoyed my time in the Algarve. Hated the drive between Lisbon and the Algarve, but enjoyed my time there.

I remember when I was in the Algarve a chick I knew from Uni had her parents summer house there and invited me to spend a few days over. Was a bit more toward Spain then on the coast, but man the place was a mansion with like wings and live-in servants and whatnot. Pretty cool.

Yeah, basically a very boring drive through Alentejo. North Portugal is a lot funner drive and a much nicer landscape

Lisbon has been pretty great so far (other than Freedom mobile fucking up my unlock code so I wasn't able to make my Vodafone data card work).

The green wine is particularly refreshing. Mrs. Plan is currently KO'd from it a 7pm...

So my Lisbon routine is wander around town all day in 30+C weather, then head back to the apt at 4ish, blast the AC, strip to my boxer-briefs, and drink beer until dinner a 9pm.

Pretty fabulous.

Right now, I cracked the window, about 200m away there a rooftop wedding reception blasting tunes, and I'm sitting here in my underwear, watching them and the sunset over the main square...

I'm on vacation too. So far today I've wired a light fixture, nailed up some boards claw took down in 2014, hosed down the AC and hung a couple of sets of blinds. Plus some general organising.

I am about to start drinking beer until a late dinner though.

I'm now in Seville. It's 40C, and I'm drinking watery light beer to hydrate before tapas... Also, I thought the Algarve was quite nice. Had a nice beach house with a short walk to a nearly private beach. The next day we went to Salema and got a small cabana and loungers on the public beach because we couldn't take more sun.

I loved Seville, such a pretty town. Took a daytrip to Cordoba from there. The Mezquita (cathedral within a mosque) was a great site, but it's a once site town.

We're in a beautiful ranch/villa in the Provençal countryside now.

I'm finding it pretty touristy. It's nice and all, just way too polished for my liking.

Our apartment looks like something out of an IKEA catalogue...
