Post-Pandemic Travel wishlist

Travel and alcohol go here. It's like culture, for rich white people who don't have culture.

Do you mean, "Why go to the west coast and Losana?" or "why haven't you travelled the US yet?"

I would even happily hang out in Delmar. Just get me out of Ottawa.

The quirkiness stops being so mesmerising and the fascism starts being apparent.

I mean, its essentially nazi germany with colourful knee high socks and pigtails.

It’s a country of soulless robots with wild and dangerously suppressed desires lurking just under the surface, but the cold robotic sense of honesty, politeness and civic duty is endearing.

All of that is true, gentlemen. I would never belittle the nazis cleanliness habits or train construction abilities either.

I would also not disparage the nazis spa amenities, alcohol delivery vehicles or late night cabaret style entertainment.

If you love train travel like I love train travel, you will love this incredible website.

Click anywhere on the map and you can see a video of local train routes taken from the engineer's cab. Most of them have no soundtrack (!!) so you get to hear the engineer's voice and the train's little jingles (something I record and collect whenever I travel; Japan's are the best).

If you're lucky, the person who made the particular video will also post captions from time-to-time as you pass local landmarks (e.g., Naka River; Osane Tunnel #1).

There are over 8,000 videos on this site. I am enthralled.

This is great, thank you!

I can now finally have to sit through long train rides without actually going anywhere!

I was doing a coastal train route in Japan's beautiful and mountainous Mie Prefucture last night. Because I was bored and kind of high on sleeping pills, I was playing the car game I used to play as a kid on long drives to break the boredom in the backseat with my stupid sister. You know - when you cross a bridge, lift legs up entire time; in a tunnel or under a bridge, raise arms above head.

Let me tell you: This was a big mistake. I'd forgotten just how many fucking tunnels there are in Japanese mountain zones. One after the other - some more than 2,000 metres. That's over two minutes with my hands in the air! I was exhausted and had to lie down after that for four hours.

Bookmarked! My friend told me today that route from Taipei to Hualien to Taitung to Kenting (where that horrible accident happened yesterday) is also worth checking out. Canada has nothing to offer, I'm afraid. Our train service is both woeful and a national disgrace. But it's kind of understandable given the distances and the lack of people.
