On a Bierzo streak as of late. Cheap, not too heavy for spanish standards, nice fruit. Best bang for your buck in Spain imo.

Godelia 23$ was very nice.

I got berated by a French waiter today for ordering a Bordeaux, which was his second recommendation. I would have gone with his first one gladly, but it was 5 euros more.

I got him back by eating quickly and only having one course.

Was he wearing a beret? If so completely justified.

I'm actually really surprised how much unlike that they are. A couple of guys in the hotel are total cunts, but hardly anyone else has been rude or resented my French.

Quebec was much worse.

I've found people usually like/appreciate that you try to speak their language even if all you can say is 'do you speak english?'.... if you come up and immediately start speaking english that's when they shit on you. Granted it's a whole different thing when they don't speak any english at all....ran into that a few times in paris/normandy/strasbourg. still everyone was helpful in such situations, though I left a paris pastry shop with like 4 shots of espresso instead of 2 double espressos

As a québecois asshole working in the service sector (I am a student) I very much appreciate american toursists. They always try to say something close to "bonjour" and then tell me they can't speak french. Anglos just don't give a shit and I never give them a single english word in response. While I was in Georgia, I would always say Hi in georgian, then asked them if they spoke russian.. always thanked them in georgian. They very much appreciated it. We meet Russians at some point on the trip and they were asking me why I would do this since it was obvious they understood us. I explained them the Quebec situation and they were just mesmerized, looked at me like I was from some homosexual galaxy. Superiority complexes I guess.

No, had to tend to my mom a bit so I postponed it. Arranging a fly in via Chicago the week of July 11th. No date set yet.

The United: ORD to YUL flight is one of the crappiest airline routes in air transportation history.

Here to help.

Not normally a fan of white wines, but the 2014 brotte chateau Neuf du pape - les hauts de barville was quite good. Better yet though was the red for the evening, 2014 amarasco from principe pallavicini. Yes it was early to open, but it was spectacular. Waiting a couple years to open the rest of those though... Also got the 2012 edition, but that's staying in the cellar for now.

Been a repeat offender at the Spanish wall of my local saq lately as well. Seems like a reliable and affordable place to avoid a sugary ambush.

My wine cellar is starting to pay dividends, as I now feel like there are enough bottles in there of a reasonable age that I can start pulling things out whenever I want a glass.

Tonight I'm having a Lan Rioja from 2005. It's a single vineyard varietal and quite nice. Still has some tannins kicking around, but it's mostly mellowed into a deep, rich, fruity glass with a nice chocolate note on the end. I'm glad I opened it when I did.

Lan, in general, is a winner for me. It's a little pricier than the bargain value Rioja's like Don Jacobo, but it's worth the extra $ every now and then.
